Brandenburg Class Pre-Dreadnaught battleships, were the first German battleships designed for high seas fleet activity. These ships of the 1888-1889 design were nicked named the Whalers by the British. and on commissioning into the Imperial German navy, they joined the 1st Division of the 1st squadron and were detached to China during the Boxer rebellion. between 1902 and 1904 they were modernised with new boilers and had their large fighting masts removed. In 1910 Kurfurst Fried rich Wilhelm and Weissenburg both Nickel steel armoured ships built by Krupp's were sold to Turkey. being renamed Heireddin Barbaroosa and Torgud Reis. Heireddin Barbaroosa was Torpedoed and sunk by Royal naval submarine E11 on the 8th August 1915 in the Dardanelle's. Torgud reis became a training ship in 1924 and broken up 1938. Both Brandenburg and Worth became during World war One, Coastal defence ships, then accommodation ships. The Brandenburg it was planned to use her as a gunnery target ships but this remained unfinished and finally scrapped on 13th may 1919.

Don't forget that sneaky third main turret in the middle! Most pre-dreadnoughts only have two main turrets, but those Germans were up to no good sneaking a third one in there (say hello to my little friend!).

Make sure you read-up on this little history of the Brandenburg and it's class design...

I like this interesting tid-bit about the Brandenburg class...

Brandenburg and her sisters were unusual for their time in possessing a broadside of six heavy guns, rather than the four guns typical of contemporary battleships. They also possessed a lighter than usual secondary battery which has caused some naval historians to view them as an early expression of the Dreadnought concept. However, despite their unique mix of weaponry, the ships were designed to fight at short ranges and the secondary battery was considered part of the offensive armament, making the Brandenburgs a variation on the Pre-dreadnought theme rather than being a form of "proto-dreadnought".

That's pretty good Matt... definately moving in the right direction! I have a good feeling about this... it's even better then the 3D model I was working on of the same ship...

Here's how good my 3D modeling skills have gotten so far on the project...

I did almost 2,000 2D units for Pacific General (and I used to do units for Civ2 as well back in the day), but I just never could make the jump to 3D units. Guess that's why I'm an old curmudgeon! Figgity foo!

Right, thanks. I think you linked to it or something because I found it and saved it. What exactly do you mean by forbidden..

Anyways, it does sound like you know somewhat what is involved. I know I tried to do 2d units for Civ 2, but at the time, our old computer did not have a program even to save .gifs!

Edit: Here is a more updated render. I am not sure about that front bit of superstructure, needs a bit of work.. And then of course a few "little" things, the weapons, texture and she will be done.

On the criticism/comments department... I see the primary battery of guns... I take it you still are going to add the secondary battery of guns?

Light grey (almost white) paint job, and a beautiful teak-wood deck and you're there!

The secondary battery are the smaller guns... you got the six 11" guns (two in each of three turrets), but it has more smaller guns (the secondary battery).

Eight 4.1" guns and eight 3.4" guns (aka: 15 pndrs).

Go to this link and click on that picture we talked about earlier up-top. It shows the exact placement of the secondary battery... those guns sticking out of the hull!

P.S.
I think two of the 3.4" guns (15pndrs) are hiding in that picture... but 8 and 6 will be good enough if you can't find two of them.

Ah, ok, I missed some! When put as a background Gmax makes it really tough to see any of the smaller stuff, so I have to keep going back to it loaded in Gimp..

I have the side ones now, just the 15 pndrs I guess.

Oh... I also think the "V" shaped supports coming out of your two masts are facing the wrong direction by 90-degrees... you have those "V"s running from bow to stern, but I think they both should be turned 90 degrees to have the "V" run starboard to port (right to left). Look at the real-world photos, not just that one colored drawing... I think they need to be turned 90-degrees based on the actual photos.

On the guns, all the stats I read on the ship say eight 4-inch and eight 15pndrs, but in all the photos and drawings I only see eight 4-inch and six 15pndrs... if you can spot the missing two, you're a better man then me, but in any case, at the very least your model should have 14 secondary guns (8+6).
