Give me 18, but not on Earth - new PBEM

I Like this. Can you imaging how many positions on the Globe a Civ turn is?

In this game... 18 ;)

We are pretty much a bunch of Euros and Americans... not anywhere as far as I can tell, its like we are booting a soccer ball (or football) across the Atlantic regularly!

Love the analogy. Ha!

So yeah, its still not working for me, says "You are trying to load a corrupt save". Tomorrow im gonna install Civ 4 on my work machine and see if it performs better there.

No idea whats the matter, im playing 3 other PBEM games at the same time and all seems to be well. I'd really like to track this error down, so if anyone has any ideas.. Im running OS X Lion on a 2011 iMac, Civ 4 is from Steam, so that should be the latest version. 3 other people could load the same savegame, all of them using PC's. Anyone here using a Mac?

Nighthawk, i also couldnt load the other save that you sent me (something with "fred" in it), so thats maybe a clue. Was the other save from a game that was also started by you?

Strange thing is, the first turn worked. Was that turn by any way different? Maybe im affected by someone who is after me in the turn sequence?

It cant be pbemtracker, i have tried loading the same savegame sent directly via email.

Could it be that someone is using a mod or some different setting, that affects the save? But then surely someone else should have problems aswell?

I can install IV to a mac using steam and give it a shot...see if I get the same error. I'm playing all my turns on Steam (Windows), without trouble.

That save was from me, and is a valid save from a completely different game.
Many people have loaded it successfully.
I don't have any mods on my machine.

The strong inference is there is something weird about - specifically - your PC.

Perhaps a complete delete and then re-install of Civ ?

If that doesn't work, a complete delete and re-install of your operating system, followed by Civ ?
The last guy who could not load it, solved it by an OS reinstall.

Then again, I haven't previously come across many people playing with a Mac.

Unfortunately this is out of the realm of knowledge that I have... short of a complete delete and reinstall of Civ IV BTS (including the latest patch) I don't have a clue. Keep us updated though... hopefully we can work through this so you can stay in the game! If you can load it up on your work machine without issue, maybe just use that to play this one. Frustrating I know!

I wish I could install civ on my work PC! We're not even allowed on CFC! I skived work today though ;)

rd13, bad news. I get the same error message on a mac. FYI, the setup is: Clean in stall of CivIVBTS via Steam on SnowLeopard.

I loaded my latest turn by choosing multiplayer->Play By EMail->Load and selecting the file. I almost immediately get the "This file is corrupt..." message, and CIV quits. For a test, I loaded a turn from the middle of another game I'm in, and it opened fine. I also tried opening my first turn in the Give Me 18 game, and it opened just fine as well.

One funny thing I noticed was that download the file from the web from this address:
http://pbemtracker.com/upload/Give_me_18,_but_not_on_Earth_BC-4000_to_the_mdg.CivBeyondSwordSave saves a file called Give_me_18,_but_not_on_Earth_BC-4000_to_the_mdg.CivBeyondSwordSave.CivBeyondSwordSave (Yes, two file extensions.)

I tried removing one file extension with the same result. Also, the first move from our game also had two file extensions and it opened just fine without any filename changes.

The error flashes so fast... I see something about the file being corrupt in the middle of the screen, but I see another window near the top right. Do you see that, and do you know what that says?

At this point, i'd be interested to know if anyone is running any mods as well... and if they are, can they try opening one of these troublesome files? Might be something to look into.

bathseba666, i have tried the complete reinstall of Civ.

themdg, thanks for testing. That narrows it down. What Mac are u using? Although that probably makes no difference. And no, i could not read the flashing error msg, will try to make a screenshot of it and see if it reveals any info.

I guess theres no point in installing on my work machine, as its a Mac aswell, but im gonna try it anyway. And then, the last resort would be to make a dualboot and install Windows.. but im not sure if its worth the effort.

Im gonna email Aspyr about this issue, see if they know anything about it.

If anyone is using a Mac to successfully play this game, it would be nice to know. Also, if anyone has any modifications whatsoever?

Another thought that occurred to me - i could try to load every single "Gimme 18" save uploaded to pbemtracker and see where exactly it stops working. The first turn worked, so it must be somewhere down the players list.

I'm interested to play such a massive game, investing only few hours per week for a looong time, so take me into account as reserve player in case you need it.

I won't be playing in the mirror game so the reserve players may have a spot. :)

Ok everyone just to give an update, I have been emailing with rd13, and he gave me his password to do his turn. I am work right now but as soon as I get a chance I will do his turn and we will keep the game moving. We are going to give rd13 a few rounds to see if he can work out his issues, but I will temporarily do his turns assuming they continue not working. If in another week or 2 he is still having issues and can't load the game, we will use a permanent replacement from the sub list. I just wanted to keep everyone informed of where we are at and assure you all that this game is NOT dying, just technical issues that we are working through.

Other than this hitch with rd13 it seems like we are moving through turns very fast and everyone seems committed here, so thats a positive. Out of 18 people it was to be expected that someone would have issues! So thats where we are at, the turns will be coming shortly and this game will be moving along nicely in the near future.

Thanks everyone for your patience!

I'm no expert (far from it) but I'll add my tuppence anyway. Could it be the comma in the file name? I had an issue once when I'd put my in-game name with an í (i-acute) and I had to remove that when I downloaded the file.

That does sound very plausible, was thinking that myself, apart from th very first turn.

Thanks for the input guys - I passed along the info to rd13, hopefully it works.

I also just did his turn... so we are moving again and will be going consistently I hope, whether his troubles get fixed or we go with a replacement...

I noticed mention of having mods loaded or the difference of not having mods within your install. I am a huge fan of user created scenarios and mod based games, these breathe new wind into the game but some people are hesitant to download them and give them a try.

Generaly speaking a scenario makes no changes to your install but might have rules or values changed to suit that particular scenario. You would need to shut down and restarted again to get 100% back to original state. But a mod is much more, it might contain new art, new sounds etc all of which would be intstalled or pasted in an appropriate place, these files are can not be loaded by the standard game in which these files are not referenced, but the scenario itself would call for these files to load up, and these Mod files would remain in play until you unloaded the mod (in the "Advance Option" menu or you shut the game off.

So in short, having mods installed does not compromise the integrity of your game unless the install somehow corrupted the rest of the install, which would be no different than patching or installing BTS over Warlords and over Civ4. Personally I have found mods as good as if not better than official material, they just don't have the "name" standing behind them
