Gliese's Deity game

@Gliese, sounds ominous, i played further too. i could post an update if you tell me until which point i can do that. Undecided as yet about how things are going.

Rusten: Yes I've been thinking along similar lines although I hadn't considered WE->Cuirassiers :goodjob: (as you say, don't know if there's iron yet, still no trading as of round 3). I'll prepare the update now so you all have a better idea of the situation. :)

@Rusten, i agree that the start is not really bad mainly due to the good capital site. That one'll really be producing beakers. I certainly plan on Oxford as early as possible, also some bulbs, paper is a bit of a waste though it's really cheap.

Seems to me that cuirassiers'll have problems with the CGII,CGIII lbs. you really need spies in this case. It might have been possible to transfer the troops with galleys but i didn't place my cities right for this so i'll need astro too. With a little luck i can reach steel/rifling ~1100 AD and attack ~10 turns later. Cannons'll get the CG units down in the end. I'd be interested in seeing your approach here.

Round 3, 875 BC - 25 BC (34 turns):

Tech order: Finished Writing, Maths, Currency, Mysticism, Meditation, PH, COL, Monarchy

850: Writing finished and I switched the granary build in Athens to a library to immediately hire two scientists there to get my first GS asap. I also switched to library in Corinth but waited for Maths before chopping it. I decided to go with silverbullet's suggestion and tech to Currency. To get there I had to tech Mathematics first however, which would give me a bit more hammers from the chopping.

700: After finishing up the granary in Athens I begun on another settler there. My other cities were building granaries/lighthouses. Sparta built some workboats for Thebes then started producing galleys for barb defense.

675: GG #2 BIDL.

600: Finished Maths and started on Currency. HG BIDL.

550: GG #3 BIDL. My first GS is born and I use him for an Academy in Athens.

500: GG #4 BIDL, Colossus BIDL.

425: My second HE-unit attempt failed as an archer with 9xp attacked a weakened barb axeman at 75% odds. I curse vehemently and at length.

The settler build was finished in Athens and I founded my 5th city.

Even though this spot won't work the whales later my culture should have expanded to cover it by the time I get Optics. More important is the extra grassland tile SEE and the forest I save as well as the ability to work some cottages for Athens.

375: GG #5 BIDL.

Well at least the other continents didn't seem to be having a lovefest, slowing their techrate. A turn later I got another piece of good news.

DG1010000.jpg

I had moved up from last position to 5th with the founding of Argos and SB is in 3rd place meaning an eventual conquest of his lands could put me in 2nd position or so worldwide.

325: Currency finished and I decided to go for Philosophy next to try and found Taoism and have it spread to SB as well as help me on my way to Liberalism, later getting a shrine for some income. For this I needed Meditation and Code of Laws and since Med would lead to the cheap Priesthood tech that cuts research time on COL I decided to go Mysticism>Meditation>Priesthood>COL.

Sparta was building galleys to defend my sea resources and not a moment to soon it seems.

DG102.jpg

That first galley was killed defending and the barb galley then proceeded to pillage the fish on the same turn, can you do that on the same turn you attack?? The 2nd galley made short work of the barb however.

300: GG #6 BIDL. Hindu shrine and SPaya BIDL.

275: Finish Mysticism start on Med.

250: Finish Med start on PH. MoM BIDL. After getting my settler in Athens I had built some phalanxes there followed by a market, my GP farm Thebes whipped a granary a lighthouse and then a library and hired two scientists. The 5th city Argos mainly worked cottages.

225: PH finish and I start on COL. Christianity FIDL.

200: My 2nd galley is killed by a barb galley on defense and I have to whip-complete another in Sparta. Not my game vs the barbs?

75: COL finished and I stupidly start on Monarchy with 2 turns left to my second GS, forgetting that I need Alphabet as well before I can bulb Philo. I usually have Alphabet by this time so I was playing on routine here I guess, not good.

50: SB complete TGL in Cahokia! Well I almost expected to lose this one but it would have been worth it to get philo first I think except..

25: Taoism is founded by SB in Choco Canyon. Curses he got them both! On this turn I also get my 2nd GS and realize my mistake in not getting Alphabet. I decided this was a good time to end the round and try to figure out where to go from here.

I'm building a monument here but to capture the fish with both SBs cities putting heavy culture on it wil require more than +5 culture per turn I suspect (though I have been doing a good job so far, getting culture to 42% or so on the tile).

Empire screen:

Athens is building another settler to start colonize the east, horse and sheep in particular, the fillers are debatable for now though the closest eastern city spot I've marked could work a number of cottages and a lake tile.

Demographics:

Still deplorable.

Well, time to focus. TGL has been built, I think cultural is out of the question and there's no rush to Philosophy. Going for Liberalism seems the best choice at this point since except for a possible diplomatic win it seems SB will have to be conquered in order to have a shot at winning this and drafting seems to be my best bet for getting an army. I think I might as well finish Monarchy now that I'm not first to Philosophy and switch to HR+ build enough units to grow my cities vertically. Especially Athens should work as many cottages as possible. Then Civil Service seems a likely target for Bureacracy and along the route to Lib.. perhaps switch to HR+Bur at the same time, depending on how long CS takes to research.
SB should be getting Alphabet soon I hope as we're almost in the ADs and we could trade for it then bulb Philo with our GS.
If I delay Machinery I can use a GS to bulb Liberalism but what about MC? Forges are good with both gold and gems (trade from SB remember). OTOH it will soon be time to fogbust the east I think unless the RNG screws me again so triremes might not be necessary. I've gotten one of my phalanxes to 8XP so he only needs one more win on the offense to unlock the HE unless it's a barb warrior.
I think I'll get at least 3 more GSs but possibly 4 if I run GSs as much as possible. With 4 I could bulb Paper as well as Rusten suggests.

I also need to fit in Drama somewhere if I'm to get the GT up in time in Thebes and extra culture is needed in Corinth to capture and hold the fish so that I can do something useful besides working gold there. Half price theaters would help with this.
Then I have to consider what kind of units to get. Muskets/Cuirassiers, Grenadiers or Riflemen? I'm also a little concerned about Cuirassiers vs protective longbows and strong cultural defense but teching to rifles/grenadiers might be a tall order (perhaps chemistry can be bulbed?).

You're not very lucky in this game Gliese, Bull not having alpha sucks big time and your adventures with the barbs could also have had a better ending.

Wait, im a bit of a noob but why would you build Thebes there. Wouldnt 1 West would've been better?

^ less desert it's true but the extra grassland is probably more important than the rather useless water squares you gain 1W. Most of these extra water squares are non coastal too. Look at it this way, the grassland with a town is worth 7 commerce with all modifiers in place. You'd have to have 3.5 coastal squares to compensate.

Wait, im a bit of a noob but why would you build Thebes there. Wouldnt 1 West would've been better?

1W would have traded 3 desert spaces and one grassland place for 4 ocean/coast... so I'm guessing it was the grassland.

What Dirk and Joshua said. My spot is also closer to the capital = less maintenance and my settler got there faster.

Thebes 1W is an awesome Moai location with 3 seafood to support population working 13 water tiles and later some workshops. This map is production poor, so it is important to set up an ideal Moai city early. Later it will become the backbone Naval yard.

After Liberalism, I would go for Optics, Astro, Economics to meet everyone and max all the trade routes ASAP.

If Thebes is Moai/workshops, which city is GP farm?

Also, don't forget ship bombardment as a method to deal with defenses.

I dont worry too much about the tech situiation, the fact that we must wage intercontinental war with a poor land is my biggest concern.

We will need a sizable Navy and invasion force to even stand a chance against a Protective Deity AI (SB) which probably will have a huge navy. It will be very very hard to "Rush" SB. One bright spot is that we could concentrate our forces at the narrow strait bordering SB and systematically destroy his Navy. I would think a Marine based invasion will be best while using navy and bombers to weaken defenses.

Besides the Moai naval city, I would put HE+Oxford in Capital for later troop production. NE is just not that important in this game.

Meeting other AIs will give us some good idea about our chances, just hoping no one is running away with superior land...

If Thebes is Moai/workshops, which city is GP farm?

You can still use it as the part-time GP farm when needed. With a good super-science capital + excellent trade route commerce + Philosophical, i dont think a few more ealier GPs (or a dedicated GP farm) will make a big difference.

^Agreed, Marines must be too late, I think it has to be some renaissance force, otherwise time's too short to enjoy the goods. I think there's enough production to get a good force together, plains with shops and all the modifiers really rock and there's enough food to work them, the start isn't as bad as it seems.

The big questions this game are imo

- Can we get liberalism first?

- Can we get good trades once we meet the others, worst case scenario would be if everyone's going constitution demo while SB goes chem, steel or replaceables, rifles.

- Is there a sort of parity between the other ais that would really help. A run away ai would be problematic even if SB's land is taken successfully.
