Hypothetical situation: China invades Taiwan. Should your country go to war with China to defend Taiwan?

It's damned if we do, damned if we don't. The last thing the United States needs is an actual war, especially with a nation with plenty of armed forces. Economically, war with China would be awful for the world. And I'd be surprised if China invading Taiwan made the American people want anything to do with that part of the world.

On the other hand, America's word needs to mean something, and not defending an ally is disgusting. Furthermore, would China's takeover of Taiwan lead to a Communist takeover of South Korea? The USA can't afford to take that risk...

No way. What could little Denmark to do huge China anyway? Our army is already busy in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo, and the navy is off Lebanon. All we could send would be a few ships, some F-16's and a batallion at most. In return China could nuke us...

China wouldn't be able to, they would lose thousands if not millions of men trying to take Taiwan. Its not much water to go across but the US would basically would be taking batting practice.

It probably shouldn't, but should definitly pretend like it would

As an American, I say no.

If they attacked US forces specifically, I would say go after them, but if they invaded Taiwan, I see no reason to.

Is there a signed protection treaty wth Taiwan saying we will defend them?

Maybe the question should be 'Would you like your allies and other countries to come to your aid, if you are attacked?' I bet the results would be different.

Yes, absolutely come to their defense. They are our ally and we have got to stand up for what is right and decent in this world. Frankly, I think we should, if Taiwan wishes it, officially recognize an independent Taiwan and screw what the ChiComs think about it.

20+ million people living in freedom and the world cowers before the PRC beast, refusing to recognize the free people of Taiwan for what they are in all but name. An independent and free nation. Pathetic and sad, truly.

And watch with glee as your economy comes tumbling down? Where do I sign?

Well a disruption in trade with China would trash the US, Chinese, and everyone else's economy. But perhaps massive military spending would save the day.

Not like Canada could do much, and not worth it in the long run.

Besides which, we're locked up in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future.

no, The the Republic of China's government is illegitimate, the Isle of Taiwan (and other isles held by the ROC rebels) are rightfully of the People's Republic of China and should they decide to retake them no one has the right to stop them.

We'll just have to go without McDonald's toys for a few years while the new factories are being set up in India, Thailand, and Egypt.

You'd also have to do without hundreds of billions of dollars that China possesses in capital reserves in the United States Federal Bank.
