And it did happen in those countries. Fallout doesn't have to be over the entire world. If all nuclear arsonals on the planet were detonated in one spot, only that area would have EXTREME fallout.

It spreads yes, but not drasticly over the entire world. It is called fallout when areas are affected. Nuclear winter is when the majority of the world is. So when loads of nuclear devices all over the world are exploded, that starts nuclear winter.

lurker's comment: Actually it has a lot more to do with the altitude at which a nuclear device is detonated than anything else. Above a certain altitude (or with a nuke of sufficient size) global tradewinds will carry the fallout around the world. It's more latitudal than longitudal so it will mostly affect that portion of the globe more (eg: Southern hemisphere would be slightly more survivable than Northern hemisphere in a USA-USSR exchange). So fallout is pretty much universal.
That said, with a sufficiently large exchange, not only do you get nuclear winter, and fallout, but the effects of nuclear firestorms (several thousand blasts in excess of a million degrees all going off at once globally changes things some) as well. Generally, in all-out nuclear war, it's mostly going to look like Mad Max, if not worse. About the only things that get through are rats, bats, and cockroaches. A post-apocalyptic world is generally not a happy place to live.
PS: A true post-nuke NES could be fun. It'd be sort of like a from-scratch one, with loads of modern weapons caches and such lying around and tiny city-states...

Woah, hello lots of Spam. I get sick for a couple days, and return to find THIS?!?1
Anyway, like some have been saying, the world survived mainly because the nukes were detonated close to the world's core in '62, and they were relatively small them some of the thermonuclear beasts that some of y'all have today. If there was a Nuclear War right now in this NES, bye bye world. We would have suffocating blanket of radioactive dust that the sun would be powerless to penetrate for perhaps thousands of years, and humanity would starve or somehow die in the resulting Nuclear Winter, in which, well, it would be like Winter on earth, very cold and such. Plus don't forget Earthquakes, Volcanoes and such from the huge explosions and force from the blasts. Oh, and radiation.
Ya, suffice to say, a full scale nuclear war right now would kill everything.
And Josef is wrong, I don't want this NES to end, but I know it will. I would like it to continue, at least to 2000, but I don't think that will happen, since I will go back to school eventually and stuff like that.
Oh, and guys, stats and stuff is done, you can send orders. Unless I forgot anything else.

Let us all agree to magically downsize all our nukes to '62 style, and only build those in the future, I for one will include it in my orders as an effort to decrease the chance of this NES ending.

I doubt it very much that other nations will downsize the nukes unfortuantley. The United Islamic States however only has nukes of that size and will not build any super-nukes *Waits for someone to point out that I dont really know what I am talking about here*

The Russian Federation will unilaterally disarm all nuclear and thermonuclear weapons over the period of six months to a year and will terminate all military nuclear development programs and urges the other nations to do the same for the sake of the world. (I really want this NES to continue)

The Philippines Nuclear Program doesn't currently have any thermonuclear weapons. But we will keep our ability to produce non-thermo nuclear weapons and reserve the right to produce thermonuclear weapons.

Well, since Stormy randomly decided to unilaterally disarm the biggfest frigen stockile of nukes in the world, this NES might survive, now, will others follow suit . . . and yes, you know whom you are . . .
BL and Cleric, if you have a complaint or comment about Updates, the best way to get me going to respond to your problem is over MSN or by PM.
For the record, Hawaii doesn't really exist as we know it. The USSR kinda nuked it with /some big Nukes in 17/62 and that kinda reactivated the volcanoes which turnjed the Hawaiian Islands into a big mass of red-hot magma, and more is coming out. When they cool again, they will be white, or in anarchy, since no nation will really own them.

Not really, #1. If it is on the surface, then it will obviously take out a lot of the surrounding area, and put a lot of yummy radioactive pollutants up into the sky, but that will pretty much be all. If it detonates farther up in the atmosphere, then we have a problem, because it will create lots of yummy radioactive waste up there which might block the sun partly and cause some tasty global cooling.

Well, does my anti-missile system have any large enviromental impacts. Since the explosions are basicly in space, not really in the atmosphere.
