GR18-AWM Genocide Variant vs 30 Civs.

lurker's comment: There's still 70 turns left, isn't there? That's PLENTY of time to research.

I'll probably take the full week and post on Wednesday. Even then I don't expect to play many turns, but we're razing enemy cities at a great rate now--eight so far in 1982.

1980 (0): We pick off a Jumbo and a German LB with our remaining uncommitted cav on the enemy continent.

I position our four settlers on the enemy continent to combat-settle against Egypt next turn.

AI cav, mostly Byzantine, have excellent luck against Temp5 (a hill town), wiping out the garrison of four inf and razing the city. We unhorse five attacking cav, while two others redline and retreat.

I had my doubts about all those railing parties protected by one inf each, but we get away with it--well calculated, Mump. :goodjob:

A redlined Portuguese destroyer sinks one of our frigates left alone off Fort Foothold.

We observe Byz cav landing on the shores of the enemy continent. Are they on a separate landmass? (Probably not, as it turns out.)

We notice a fair amount of AI-on-AI violence.

Egyptian ironclads bombard our destroyers at sea, intelligent behavior I've rarely seen from the AI.

We settler-abandon a temporary town on the enemy continent after pumping it up with a worker.

1981 (1): Hammer Song still has a post-railing food surplus, so we mine six of its irrigated tiles.

Off Move East we sink eight enemy ships, two of them galleons and probably loaded (8-0).

We account for two Chinese riflemen landed near Bad Town, generating another Hwach’a GL and so our fifty-seventh army (10-0).

We dispose of four Eg units, two inf and two cav, landed near East Coker on Silk Island, then sink the squadron of four ships which brought them (18-0).

We found the tactical town of Abelard, giving us access to Memphis.

We bombard and raze Memphis, held by five inf (23-0). We capture an artillery, three cannon, and two cats.

We found the tactical town of Adalbert, giving us access to Abydos.

We raze Abydos, held by three inf (26-0). We capture a cannon.

We found the tactical town of Adamantius, giving us access to the Eg capital of Thebes, though we probably won’t attack it this turn.

We found the TT of Adamnan, gaining access to Avaris.

We raze Avaris, held by four inf (30-0).

We found the TT of Agapetus, giving us access to Giza.

We raze Giza, held by four inf (34-0). We capture a cat.

We sink a Babylonian caravel, presumably loaded, almost at the South Pole (35-0). Perhaps its presence there means something.

At sea generally we sink six enemy ships, one a galleon and probably loaded (41-0).

Outside cities on the enemy continent we smite forty enemies, mostly targeting fast units. Is there anything in this game that feels more wrong than shooting an elephant with a tank? We lose two tanks and generate a GL (81-2).

We abandon seven towns on the enemy continent and found eight on our own.

Only the Byz attack us on the enemy continent. We dispose of four of their cav and redline five, while losing an inf (85-3). They don’t capture anything.

We settler-abandon a town on the enemy continent.

1982 (2): We begin fogbusting off our coasts with jet fighters.

The Persians are on the same island as the Mongols.

We found the TT of Babylas, giving us access to Heliopolis.

We raze Heliopolis, held by four inf (89-3).

We raze the Eg capital of Thebes, held by seven inf and a cav (97-3).

We found the TT of Bede and raze Kahun, held by three inf (100-3).

Turning our attention to the north for a moment we raze Arab Najran, held by four riflemen and two cav (106-3).

We found the TT of Berengar and raze Byblos, held by two inf and a cav (109-3).

We raze Pithom, held by two inf (111-3).

We found the TT of Barsumas and raze Buto, held by three inf and a cav (115-3).

We found the TT of Brinus and raze Asyut, held by four inf (119-3).

We found Benedict, claiming the wines on the enemy continent.

We found the TT of Bradwardine and raze Athribis, held by three inf. We sink at least one ironclad when we enter the town (123-3).

We sink five enemy ships off the NE corner of our continent, and another five off the shores of the enemy continent (133-3).

Outside cities on the enemy continent we slay thirty-five enemies, generating four Great Leaders (168-3). With 252 cities and 63 armies, we’re right at the limit.

We abandon eight towns on the enemy continent and found ten on our own.

Six enemy units, four of them Byz cav, perish attacking our cities on the enemy continent (174-3).

Our destroyer exploring the northern coast of the Persian/Mongol island or peninsula is hunted down by an enemy destroyer (174-4).

1983 (3): We raze El-Amarna, held by four inf (178-4).

We found the TT of Cuthbert and raze Hieraconpolis, held by five inf and a guerrilla (184-4). It’s a size-twenty-five city, so I have the fun of disbanding twelve workers to conform to our variant. ;)

We found the TT of Caesarius and raze Tanis, held by four inf (188-4).

We found the TT of Chrysologus and raze El-Ashmunein, held by three inf (191-4).

We found the TT of Cosin and raze Egyptian Nippur, held by four inf (195-4).

We found the TT of Caedmon and raze Arab Khurasan, held by two riflemen (197-4).

We found the TT of Campion and raze Arab Yamama, held by two riflemen (199-4).

In the NE of our continent we strike down three landed Chinese units and sink five ships (207-4).

Outside cities on the enemy continent we expunge forty-two enemy units and generate two Great Leaders. We lose a cav (259-5).

We abandon four towns on the enemy continent and found four on our own.

The Byzantines seem to have more cav than the rest of our enemies put together. They almost take our wines town of Benedict with massed attacks, grinding down three inf while we eliminate five cav and redline four (264-8).

We have to be very careful about letting armies raze coastal cities with their last movement point. One of our armies in this position takes a tremendous hammering from naval bombardment, though it’s covered by another army and both survive.

The Portuguese try to plant a spy in our capital. Guess we’ll have to declare war on them. :D

1984 (4): In the NE of our continent we annihilate four landed American units and sink seven enemy vessels, one an Eg galleon and probably loaded (275-8).

We found the TT of Damasus and raze Mendes, held by three inf (278-8).

We raze Busiris, held by three inf (281-8).

We found the TT of Damian and raze Ebla, held by two inf. We lose a cav but gain a GL (283-9).

We found the TT of Deiniol and raze the Arab capital of Basra, held by five riflemen and two cav (290-9).

We found the TT of Didymus and raze the Indian capital of Kolhapur, held by four riflemen and a cav. We sink a frigate when we enter the town (296-9).

We found the TT of Diatesseron and raze Indian Punjab, held by two riflemen (298-9).

We found the TT of Dositheus and raze Indian Dacca, held by three riflemen. We sink at least one ship in port (302-9).

We found the TT of Dionysius and raze the latest Eg capital, Akkad, held by three inf (305-9).

We found the TT of Durandus and raze Lisht, an isolated Inca town at this point rather than an Egyptian one (garrison of two inf; 307-9).

We found the TT of Dubricius and raze the latest Indian capital, Indus (held by three riflemen; 310-9). The distant tundra village of Pune, apparently India’s last city, becomes the new capital.

Outside cities on the enemy continent we liquidate fifty-four units, plus a ship off the coast, losing a cav (365-10). We gain three Great Leaders, bringing us to sixty-seven armies plus a hoarded leader we can’t use until we hold more cities.

We abandon ten cities on the enemy continent and found eleven on our own. One of the cities we abandon is our wines town of Benedict, since we have a wine source elsewhere and this is more efficient than wasting attacks on the large Indian stack adjacent to the town.

I hoped to play a fifth turn, but RL hasn’t obliged. We razed thirty cities, anyway.

126 normal elite victories this round, three of them defensive, generated ten Great Leaders. Approximately six victories by elite Hwach’a produced one additional Great Leader.

We disbanded 112 captured workers this round to conform to our variant.

We’re already at the point where we can raze a steady seven or eight cities a turn, and that’s before our imminent discovery of MA, for which we have seven empty armies waiting. Our having the raw combat power to take 240 cities or so in the sixty-six remaining turns shouldn’t be a problem, even though having to raze everything is a real tactical handicap in this era. We’re more likely to have trouble with technicalities such as uncovering the whole map, producing enough settlers, and getting transports to the right places.

The Byzantines have enough cavalry to kill a few of our infantry in towns, but the AI can’t really threaten our operations on the active continent. We can largely ignore the big stacks of slow enemy units, and save our army attacks for cities.

It looks possible that the enemy continent is doughnut-shaped, with an inland sea at the centre.

We’re on course to discover SF in two turns, but by the smallest possible margin. So settler production this IT will definitely throw us off, and we’ll have to add scientists after that.

We’ve formed one carrier group, which is heading north loaded with jet fighters to clarify the map. We’re still exploring the southern darkness with destroyers. But it’s becoming obvious that all this isn’t going to be enough, and we need to research Space Flight --> Satellites after SynFib for a full world map. We should be able to discover Satellites with about forty turns left in the game—plenty of time to deal with any problems we see.

Even though the danger isn’t great, we need to check F7 every turn to make sure the AI hasn’t started the UN.

We have four settlers positioned to combat-settle against the Egyptians in the south next turn, which will help us advance through the forested tundra. That’ll briefly reduce us to just three settlers on the enemy continent, but a large convoy will arrive on the following turn.

Our rail line to the north of the enemy continent has some breaks in it, so study it carefully before you use it. ;)

Don’t overlook the two cav armies we have fortified in the N and NW of our position on the enemy continent.

We have two destroyers stacked together and fortified in the sea W of the southern peninsula of the enemy continent, so you’ll need to look for those too.

Silk Island is quite lightly defended, but we can reinforce it from our homeland in one turn if necessary.

There’s a Portuguese convoy off Airfield Peninsula in the NW of our continent, in addition to the usual regatta off the NE coast.

The destroyer off the SE coast of Silk Island was mis-clicked, and should be part of the carrier group a little to the E.

Producing enough settlers to keep up with our conquests is already a problem, and it’s going to get worse. We’re probably going to have to rush a lot of settlers at almost full price, and also build them in core cities, after which we can return the towns to size twelve with worker merges. There’s still a fair amount of room for cities on our home continent, as long as we don’t care about the quality of the sites.

Pusan and Resertification are about to produce settlers with their food boxes full at size twelve, so they should receive one worker merge each next turn.

As usual, the units I’ve left with their movement indicate the important or easily overlooked stacks.

nice progress :goodjob:

lurker's comment: Don't you have "Alert When wonder is being built" or whatever it's called, on in the Preferences? It tells you if any AI you know is building a wonder.

The Ruins make the other continent look odd, but cool.

So, how many civs are not yet destroyed?

Thanks for the tip. In fact the Wonder initiation pop-up is on--it just seems like a long time since I've seen it, which reflects either the special circumstances of AW or the length of this game.

Eighteen enemy civs are still alive, but that figure is a little misleading, since we've been working on the Egyptians with their huge number of cities, and (unless what we see is an overseas town) we're about to start on the Byzantines, who have even more. What's important is that our average of cities razed per turn is far over the number we need to beat the deadline, and will only increase.

lurker's comment:
...
We settler-abandon a temporary town on the enemy continent after pumping it up with a worker.

I think you can settler-abandon at size one, no need to add a worker.

and

Is there anything in this game that feels more wrong than shooting an elephant with a tank? .

If there is, I don't want to know about it!

Mark, you're up.

I think you can settler-abandon at size one, no need to add a worker.

Yes, you can. It's a problem with the agricultural civs we've been playing recently, since with three food from the city centre it's impossible to get a size-one town to zero growth, but that isn't the case here.

Sorry, guys. I will not be able to get to it this weekend, so I am better be skipped, so the next player has the chance to play on the weekend.

ok, will try and finished over the weekend so that you can take the turns during the week, markh

just an update..this game is huge and will take much more time than expected. I am into the 5th turn, it is slow going as we need to raze everything and many units are bogged down defending our land against huge intruder stacks, mainly from Inca, Portuguese and Babylon.

The good news is that Babylon has a ton of money and we got already more than 10000gold from them. This is used to rush settlers and short rush modern armor.

many units are bogged down defending our land against huge intruder stacks, mainly from Inca, Portuguese and Babylon

It's partly a question of the player's style, but I don't think it should be necessary to hold more than ten cities on the enemy continent at the end of any given turn. I assume that we can't have run out of city sites on our home continent yet, since their quality doesn't matter now.

well, I rather groom settlers on the other continent faster. And there isn't that much space left on our continent considering that I got us to more than 300 cities.
The other continent is on the verge of breaking down now and it looks as if we face another 2 more continents. Thus, we need to send transports there once the main bulk of work is done on the other continent. It looks as if that is due to happen at the end of my turnset.

save

Pre-Turn
MM a little, bit things look great

IT my goodness, the enemy has some monster stacks going for our cities. Babs have bombers as well, not so nice
Portuguese land a stack on the Island

1.1985AD
we only have 6 settler on the other continent, this will make razing cities a little more difficult
the size of the battlefield is really staggering and a little confusing at first

raze Mansura, found Bubu to get closer to Egypt in the forested tundra
raze Buhen, found city with same name (not very creative I know)
raze Zamua, found Zamub
raze Adab

I can't clear the Portuguese landing completely, lose a tank in the process
rush barracks in Incense as we need some place to upgrade our units, also the city is threatened by around 100+ units
make a new army and get a new MGL

IT lose Bubu to cavalry attacks by Byzantines
Arabia is apparently fighting England as I can spot them pillage the lands there
watch around 30 Egyptian clads and frigates bombard our armies at the front
the Inca super stack gets discouraged to attack Incense
we get synthetic fibers, go for satellites via space flight

2. 1986AD
found a city first to replace Bubu
raze Babylon's Hindana and get 1020gold, great as we need that to upgrade our tanks
raze Munich, raze Anjar, Heidelburg

found More Cows, Pferdestall, Another Army, Kohleberg
get a new army, get another leader, disband an obsolete sword army in our capital and from another empty army

raze Nimrud for 1388gold, we ought to attack them exclusively for more cash
found a replacement town for that
raze Khorsabad, found city, enables to take out New Thebes, replacement founded

take out a lot of units of the Portuguese stack that is in our land, attacks with tanks once then upgrade them (this gives us 30 MA for now)
cash rush a few settlers

IT we get the message that Egypt has destroyed Rome
I do not like those tundra cities we founded, this time we lose Buhen to the Indians with a cav army
Zamub gets attacked by 4 Babs bombers and then the big Babs stack attacks, luckily partially only and we hold on to the city

3.1987AD
replace lost city, as hoped, we can found an additional city (thought Egypt might have razed Rome)

start to attack Nineveh, but it is hard to reach and seems to have too many defenders inside
manage to raze Elipi though, for 1500gold :)
raze Oryx, found Styx, Midnight Oil
raze Bukhara and just as I hoped, this eliminates the Arabs
found Simple Minds
raze Berlin, replace with Closure

start to clear our new holdings from big Inca and Portuguese stacks, they must have BM as they do not retreat wounded units
this will take time and occupy units that we better use from offense, no choice though

at least clearing these pests gives us another MGL
short rush settlers and 2 MA

IT Germany also fights England and manages to take Liverpool right in front of our eyes
Zamub gets bombed again, but with a green tank army inside, this is no longer a problem, in fact non of our cities gets attacked by land units
Portuguese land on the offshore Island yet again

4.1988AD
stock take at the beginning of the turn, we do have 286 cities now
take out Portuguese landing and gain another army

take Shurrupak but get only 771gold, a pity
Nineveh is a tough nut, but after defeating 12 units, the pop 22 city is razed for 1619gold
raze Izibia, Frankfurt, fail to take German Liverpool
4 cav armies are needed but manage to raze Nuernberg

found 5 cities as replacement
clear units yet again and get three MGL from hwacha and cavalry, lose a healthy cav against sword on flat ground

IT more units streaming into our land, annoying

5. 1989AD
take out Mari for 1284g, Eulbar for 1324g, Samarra for 914g, Babylon for 1485g
we are rich now with 7000+ gold
raze Egyptian Sebennytus, Byz Nicaea, Aztec Cempoala. German Hannover

spot Inca land and send in a tank army

found 8 replacement cities, with the new cities we effectively devide the continent into 2

taking out all the enemy units in our land is am impossible task. I try and get rid of the stacks inside the core
we will get pillaged but that doesn't really matter
get 2 MGL's there

rush a few things including 2 factories

IT lose 2 exploring destroyers

6. 1990AD
raze Ashur, Carchemish for 1700g, Prilep, Bremen, Leipzig, Liverpool and Konigsberg

found 7 cities
start to clear our possessions as usual and get 2 MGL
this time manage to clear a lot of units...form 3 more MA armies for the front

IT the turns getting faster as there are less enemy units running about, we are on the verge of running over the enemy

7.1991AD
take out Uruk with knights templar for 2067g, Tell Wilaya falls for 2238g (happen that our petty cash is now 11111gold)
found a tactical town to get to Zaruqum as our MA takes out only 2 units
take the city out including those 6 pesky bombers, we get 1679g
I can now only see one more Babs city

we are close to taking out the whole tundra with Egypt, India and Babylon
however, progress is slow due to slow moves
manage to take out Ibis and Sippar
another tactical town is founded and Busbatis falls as well

Inca Vilcabamaba has a lot of units inside, but eventually falls to out MA armies. Ancyra is an equally tough nut to crack, it goes down though.

clear units, gain MGL's and manage to raze another Egyptian city, Karana
found city and we have now 316 of them

IT all of a sudden, a lot of Egyptian cavalry appear and invade our land, hey came from the north of the continent, very weird

8.1992AD
I count around 80 Egyptian cavalry, how annoying is that?
angry with that, raze Eridu, Bonn
found Gold Hill to advance and raze Telloh
found city to get south and raze Egyptian Ixtapaluca

can't reach any cities beyond that point this turn. Though there are no more Egyptian cities there, the are still in the game
raze Cologne

found replacements
then fight off units, our new core is free of enemy units, but I need to deal with those Egyptains cavalry
gain two leaders from hwachas

as usual cash rush settlers and short rush some MA

IT we get the message that France destroyed Japan
Egypt and their units slow the game down a lot...their cavalry retreats, but the slow movers invade the country

9. 1993AD
time to remove two Civs from the game I hope
raze Pune, remove 7 units and raze Ganges, India is no more
well, I miscalulated and Babylon will have to wait a turn

raze Hamburg, 11 units are inside Iconium, it falls nevertheless
Naissus falls after taking out 7 units. Varna disappears as well

replace those 6 cities, Trebizond now within reach and is also razed
push further with a new city and Amorium is razed as well

we have now 328 cities, I spot a Babs setter stack with 3 settlers, weird

IT we get space flight, satellites next in 7 at slight deficit

10.1994AD
I can't believe my eyes when we get this
gr181994a.jpg

Babylon is gone

can turn attention fully to Byzantines:
raze Nicomedia and Caesarea with US
raze Chacedon, found new city to reach and raze Adrianople
same procedure and Constantinople with Leo's goes down
found 2 more cities and raze Septum, the 2nd last city in the south.
We can seal this off and hold the whole south

Below an overview of the visible map. We will get a full map in 7 turns, thus should be in time to take out all cities.

gr181994b.jpg

There are 2 more continents and a tiny Island off the Portuguese coast. We can ship units from our new holding as we now control a whole stretch across the continent. Hopefully we can eliminate all units south and then free many armies held in cities for defense at the moment.

We now have 335 cities, this is an increase of 65 in 10 turns, not too shabby, but should get even faster with more armies.

What I did was to cash rush settlers in cities that grow to pop 3 in the interturn. It is the small cities that we should milk instead of the bigger ones. I did not touch the MM this turn for cash rushes as I left that to the next player. We do have a lot of cash now. Feel free to use it liberally. We should keep some to rush some navy in the western holdings of the second continent
