GR18-AWM Genocide Variant vs 30 Civs.

The reason I didn't go for pottery because I believe that cities without food bonuses would not complete any tech in less than 50 turns. Remember on these huge maps the science rate is very slow. Maybe I should have tested this as Monarch is an easier level than I am used to.

My reasoning was that since any tech was 50 turns we might as well go for a second tier tech while building up money. We could have gone for Writing or Iron Working, and I chose Iron Working (Writing and then Philosophy might have been better - I am not sure).

My hope is that once we have more than one city we can get techs faster. The cash will pay for deficit research.

M60A3TTS, I am glad you have been playing with us and understand the need for a break. If you want to rejoin for the next or a future game, then you are welcome back.

played 10 turns, managed to take out Utrecht for the loss of 2 warriors

got another worker and a settler that is now under the spear. We do have iron but it is 2 city locations to the south. Thus, we need to settle first where the warrior now stands and get out another settler.

I was wondering why the worker was mining the wheat? I rectified this and we will have that irrigated soon.

Since swords are still some time to go, I think we should now go for WC first. We can get it currently in 23 turns, bu we need some offensive capabilities.
The warrior in the north still has the movement as to highlight the 2 warrior stack of the Dutch that is moving towards our land.

Ottomans are further away as the 2 hp warrior is surely a popped unit

Good work disposing of Utrecht. :goodjob:

The genocide variant is making things harder already. In a normal AW game, having the Dutch found core cities for us could be helpful.

This is a tricky situation, because if we settle directly and immediately towards the iron as Rat intends we'll spend two of our precious settlers on thoroughly wretched towns (at least in the short run), and I'm not sure that we can afford that, even at monarch. There's not much point in founding these miserable places until the road network connecting them and the iron to the capital is nearly complete, since their production will be minimal. So I'd use our present settler to found a good town somewhere in the northern grassland--even on the ideal spot between the cow and the wheat, if the next player thinks we can get away with it--while we begin building our road to the iron. The road should go around the mountains to the north, not through them, both to save worker-turns and so that the midway city on the iron route can be a river/plains/coast town with some promise. In this position we can't expend a settler on an outright junk city (again, in the short term) just to get the shortest route to the iron.

Lurker's Coment: Shouldn't the desert tiles be flood plains that are by the iron since they're by a river?

Ok, I got it. Just got home, so may not get to it until the morning, if anyone wants to chime in.

I cannot even see the iron from the pix, but for sure any river going into the desert should be flood plains. It is probably just the graphics package.

If the iron is past the rivers on the desert side, that would seem to be a long way to expand to right now. We probably need some towns or at least one more in the grass area first.

Not sure how long it would take to get a road and a colony as well as a few spears to sit on things. We may be able to do that, if we do not face more civs and lots of units right away.

Got a chance to load the game and I think we want to get a worker and a Spear for cover to start roading south while we settle in the bonus land to the north. The land north is so much better.

A colony may work well. We can send additional workers to connect faster later on if we so choose. Spear in Mountain have defense 4.5 when fortified and can defend a colony quite well. 2 Mountain Spear probably won't even get attacked in the near future.

Pre:
I see a warrior with movement next to two dutch guys. I do not want to fight here and kill one and then die, not enough units for that. I move off hoping they will follow.

IBT:
They seem to be heading to town, so I parallel them for now.

1725BC:
Rename warrior to warrior1 and he killed the forted warrior losing 1 hp (1-0).
Move the settler combo towards the cow, reversing the direction it was going.
Warrior2 straight ahead. It sees a hut.

I see three paths to the iron. The fastest is Desert, Hill, Hill, Desert,Desert, Desert and then colony. I think that we get a road with the colony, so do not have to road it. I have not made a colony in ages, so I may remember that incorrectly.

Does not matter right now as we have no workers to start the job. If it takes 3 turns to do a desert road and 6 for a hill and 12 for a mountain, that path is 27 turns Vs the other two being 30. The reason is the other two have either replaced a desert with a hill or a mountain.

So even if the turns needed is not correct, the relationship still holds up.

The two warriors will arrive before the second spear is up, but the spear escort can get to the town.

IBT:
They arrive on the doorstep.

1700BC:
Warrior2 pops barbs, thanks.
spear/settler in town now.
I am forced to move the workers to a safer place, so I send them to the unroaded tile that was irrigated.

I would have preferred to road towards the cow. I would have had to send a spear and hope the two warriors did not kill either that spear (unforted) or the one left in town, also unforted.
It is too early to take that risk. I would do it in a solo game, but not with team play.
I moved warrior3 to the wheat. It cannot be attacked and can go in town or attack next turn and not be left exposed.

IBT:
Well it went well. One warrior attacked and dies, doing no damage. One barb attacked warrior2 and dies, but did take it to 2 HP (2-0).
[3-0]

1675BC:
Dutch found town next to the wheat.
Pyong starts another spear.
Another dutch warrior heads to town.
I send warrior1 one back as we need to do some attacking.
Warrior3 starts out good and gets the dutch guy to red and then goes o for 3 and dies (0-1).
Spear kills the warrior and another spear and the settler move to the spot (1-1).
I fort warrior2 for now.
[4-1]

IBT:
nothing, a barb moves past warriro2.

1650AD:
Warrior2 kills barb and is now relined, no promotion (1-0).
[5-1]

IBT:
nothing

1625BC:
nothing. Moved one worker to start the path for iron and sending warrior1 to cover.

IBT:
nada

1600BC:
Found Wosan and start a rax as a place holder. Worker roading to connect it and then can go to the cow, but will need protection.

IBT:
nada

1575BC:
Start a road on the first desert tile.
Start road to Wosan
Pyong starts settler as it will grow in 7. That is sooner than we can get out a spear and a settler. May change to get a warrior and then a settler as that is 7 turns. Will decide next turn.

The thing is we will pop a warrior from Seoul next turn. We do need to get attackers, even lame ones.
Warrior kills dutch, but is redlined. Cover with a spear and hope that the dutch do not get lucky. (1-0)
[6-1]

IBT:
Dutch warrior goes for Wonsan and dies (1-0).
[7-1]

1550BC:
Switch Pyong to warrior as we have found another friend in the Vikes and it is an archer. I move a newly minted warrior in its path. It will have to attack across the river.

IBT:
Archer attacks and another tight one. We go red and then come back to win. We get a promotion to elite (1-0).
[8-1]

1525BC:
Move elite to heal in town.

IBT:
nada

1500BC:
As you can see warrior2 has found a parade of Ottoman heading our way. An archer on one tile and a spear on another. Not sure if the archer will attack as we on across the river and on a mountain.

I was trying to head straight past the lake and parallel our towns till it got to the same distance out and then turn back to home. It would seem the ottoman are a long ways from us.

I was trying to locate them and maybe a hut, but not go too far out and find new friends.

I intended to have the healing warrior join the one next to Wonsan to maybe visit Groningen.
Maybe send a spear along as well.

Too bad we cannot get the gems hooked up. A worker is under the spear on the cow now.

BTW I had intended to road the gold hill and then the desert next to it. Angle towards the Iron via all desert tiles till next to the iron. This may be a problem now as the Vikes must have come from the far side of those mountians.

We can expect archers from Otto and Vikes, so we should be having extra defenders as some of them will win, until we get elites and walls.

Not sure how long it will be before swords come. depends on the luck of the huts and who has iron close.

They won't all be the same. The path I picked is the fastest. The only thing that changes is is the exact number of worker turns needed.

A) DHHHDDD Iron
B) DHHDDDD Iron
C) GMHHDDD Iron

So as you see B swaps a hill for a desert saving some turns over A.
B swaps a desert for a mountain with C saving even more turns.

The only other consideration is invaders paths. Know way of knowing them, but only the Vikes should be coming over in that direction.

Once a town can be put down on the hills we will have to worry about the roads being cut. I suspect that soone after that we will have expanded enough to not have that issue.
