GRAND OPENING: CivFanatics File Database

I noticed, that when MarineCorps is adding Ripptide's units, those units are not shown in Ripptide's profile. My guess is, that since MC is adding those units (and makes Ripptide the creator), they don't show in RT's profile.

BUT THEY SHOW IN MARINECORP'S PROFILE. Well, no wonder MC volunteered ;) :p

Thanks MarineCorps.

No problem. Not like I do anything else except sit at my computer.:D Might as well do something good.

It's a huge task to add the existing files to the new system, so we could use all the help we could get (especially for files whose authors are inactive). :) If it helps, I could even add incentives like more PM storage space and bigger avatars for people who help add the files. ;)

Be nice. But If you do there should be a minium amount of files someone should upload.

I just hope no one is releasing new files the old ways w/o using the new system. That would unnecessarily create more work. :aargh:

That would be painfull.

@aaglo: :p That will be one long list. :D

EDIT: I don't think RT could have gotten any less descriptive in his Descriptions

Just include a ton of annoying pop-ups in the old upload system... then people would go all :ar15: , :badcomp: and :gripe:
What a drastic solution! It has an appeal, in a way...

However the old system is still needed for other reasons. It happens that people need to upload files that are not complete works - samples or previews of future projects. I had to do this a few times when helping the development of another person's project. Or there are people who just love uploading their saved games and share them with others.

There is another very simple solution: Whenever we see someone uploading complete works using the old way we keep mention it until he/she switches to the new one. But it seems that most creators are used to the new system already - so we won't have to do this often.

I posted about it in post #53. :)

The way it works now is fine. The uploader can control/edit the file he uploaded, not the author. This is because the author field doesn't need to be a forum user name (ex. Firaxis Games, Microprose), while the uploader must be a member. I can change a file's uploader easily. If Kindred72 becomes active again, I can assign his files back to him easily. So don't let this prevent you from adding files created by inactive modders.

About unit types, I think the current unit categories are fine. It's not necessary to further classify units as land, naval, or air units within each era since you can see the unit types at a glance by looking at the thumbnails.

MarineCorps added 90+ files already? That's super quick! :)

Actually it's a bit slow.;) I had to stop for about an hour to eat. Otherwise like I said I don't move from this chair.:D

I'll be done with RT before 11:30 :D

Thanks MarineCorps! :)

BTW, we are going to have a new version of Easy Upload very soon! :band:

Is there any way to keep a file from being uploaded multiple times? We Civ3 modders have been trying to find the most efficient way to organize stuff for years, and I can just imagine half a dozen of us uploading the entire contents of the old Unit Library to celebrate the new system. Maybe we should start a thread in C&C to organize the effort.

Or a username change? :mischief:

;)

uhh.... :scared:
But it was only 898 bytes!

You mean add a file multiple times to the file database (since you can link to existing file links)?

If you are not sure if something is already added or not, you can use the file seach to quickly check it.

But feel free to start a thread in Civ3 C&C to organize the effort and recruit more helpers to add the files. :)

EDIT: Added a File DB FAQ to the first post and announcement.

I tested it using a test account and got the same thing. Thanks for the report. I have disabled user deletion of comments for now...

Ok, I have created a File DB Helpers group which allows 130 PMs and 80x80 custom avatars (6 KB size limit). :)

So far I have added aaglo (for adding so many of his own files) and MarineCorps (for helping to add files made by inactive authors) to the group. Both of them added 200+ files so far.

For now anyone who helps to add 150 or more files (especally files made by inactive authors) to the File Database are eligible to join the group. :)

Intresting limit. Thats several hours worth of work. Which means that you have to be dedicated to doing it.

Think it's too high? Perhaps I should lower it to 100... So if people add just 10 files a day, 10 days later he can have the extras. ;)

100, 150 either ones fine with me. 100 would be easier and still show effort but 150 would show a higher level of dedication. But IMO I don't belive it should be lower then 100.

Unfortunately no, if you want the file thumbnail.

If your file has multiple preview images, just upload one for it to make the file thumbnail and the rest you can include using img tag in the description.

Am I just missing something, or is there no way to upload an image from a url? It's kind of annoying to have to save and re-upload all the previews.

It's one of the few annoynces I have with the the new system. I just wish I could upload images in the intial post rather then uploading it after I've submitted it.

@TF: Are you going to post an ancounment asking for help to upload old units? As by my rough estimates there are probaly around 3K units in that forum, which means it could take a while to upload all those units.

What? Where? Did I miss something, or what?
Altough I have to admit, that it sounds very cool... Can I use that larger avatar here at CFC?

Well, looking at the pace MC was adding those units, it doesn't take more than what.. 4 hours or so :)
