Where I got the idea of this thread: Anonymous Petty contributor sent a bunch of magazine scans for the Archives (not sure where they got them). Most weren't very useful but some were, including this article on "150 Greatest Debut Albums" at least according to the magazine. But thats not the point though you can post if you like the article.

But the point of the thread is, what do you think are the greatest debut albums. Also you can post your favorites even if they are not "greatest." Also please post why you think it is, instead of just the album name or a video or whatever as posts consisting solely of YouTube links get annoying fast and there is no discussion. Also feel free to politely debate (that means no flamewars or I will be angry with those who start flamewars). And if people tell me to shut up about Petty I will be even more angry so you better not.

I may post later.

The Cars. Just The Cars.

Since Broken Bracelet was a self-produced project that she came up with when she was 14, I'm going to call The Spirit Room Michelle Branch's debut album. It's my favorite album of all time - three of my top-ten songs are on it, including my favorite song of all time, and I like all of the songs (not like most albums where there are at least a few clunkers). The cover is nice and simple, not too ridiculous.

The self titled debuts by The Clash and The Ramones . I'll steal this quote from I can't remember who " The first Ramones album instantaneously made half the records in your collection obsolete " . The first Clash album for me was the moment punk become less about style and contained something more tangible . Don't forget it contains almost reggae style soul covers even that early with "Police and Thieves"

Public Enemy - Yo Bum , Rush the Show . Flav and Chuck D laying down the law

Black Sabbath . IMHO the first true metal band and record . Tommy Iomi's guitar and Ozzie's voice really is the foundation of all metal as opposed to hard rock.

Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley . Well duh ! It must have sounded on the radio like it was being transmitted from Mars

Queen , Funkadelic , The Doors , Jimi Hendrix , Metallica , Frank Zappa and lots of others also had great debuts . I'm really only thinking rock music .

EDIT .... Would I still listen to it much now ? Probably not . But Pearl Jams 10 I enjoyed a lot at the time

Well that wasn't exactly the response I was looking for :(

Sometimes, less is more. I encapsulated all that needed to be known about their eponymous first album in just 4 words.

end off.

Rum, Sodomy and the Lash by the Pogues.

Noone had ever heard such an alcohol and piss stained record, brutally raping Irish music with the spirit of punk.

As someone once said (paraphrased) "I went to a gig in a pub, and the Pogues were on stage. Suddenly a tramp shambled in through the door, and I hoped he'd be kicked out by security. That tramp shuffled onto stage, and started singing. He was Shane MacGowan"

This, very well described :goodjob:

Also

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights - wonderfully atmospheric broody album
The Smiths - self-titled - A soundtrack for lonely teenagers for nearly 30 years now

Excellent choice.

I interpreted the thread to mean debut albums which were the band's best work. So with that in mind, I'll add;
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
The Fratellis - Costello Music
The Killers - Hot Fuss
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

I strongly preferred Franz Ferdinand's second album actually. Their first album was good too but the second was awesome.

For me I'd have to pick Surfer Rosa by Pixies. Doolittle is the favorite to a lot of people but I have always prefered Surfer Rosa. Also, I saw someone mention The Clash and The Ramones, so on the topic of punk, I nominate Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.

Here's my top choices:

Mentioning stuff people haven't already mentioned, Massive Attack's Blue Lines is one of my favorite albums from the 90s, and Björk's Debut is probably as well, though not as good as her next two albums. Then there's R.E.M.'s Murmur, IMO their best album. Also, Siouxsie and the Banshees' The Scream is probably their best album. Finally, Pretty Hate Machine is another excellent debut (though The Downward Spiral may be better).

Hmm... Of my favorite few bands, I'd have go with Boston's Boston. they're not my favorite band, but their debut album was easily their best, having basically all but one of their greatest songs, and one of the best rock albums of all time. I'd be hard pressed to name another group that started out like that.
