I recently saw a comment in another thread about how Ronald Reagan was the greatest leader of the 20th Century. I just want to see who other people think the greatest leader of the 20th Century was.

And, to start us off, I'll cast my vote for Stalin. Stalin effectively transformed his nation from a large, third-world backwater to a powerhouse of economy, technology, and military great enough to challenge the United States for supremacy of the post-WWII world. He also managed to expand Russia's borders significantly during WWII as well, something which Ronald Reagan and other U.S. presidents generally failed to do.

The guy was president when I was born. :) Best in my country in the 20th century anyway. I'm not knowledgeable enough about history or foreign politics to speculate about earlier times (in this century) or nations.

The 20th Century was terribly short on good leaders.

Wojciech Jaruzelski, because I am different.

It would certainly seem so... :)

I disagree. Stalin, Hitler, FDR, Churchill, Kaiser Wilhelm, and, outside of my obvious WWII leaning, a great many others I have failed to mention, were all great leaders.

Yogoslavian presiden Tito.
His partisans freed Yogoslavia from fascism, he modernised Yugoslavia and more importantly kept it together and he had the cojones to defy Stalin, lead a socialist country indepedent from the Soiet Union and kept it out of the cold war.

Kaiser Wilhelm should not even be in this discussion.

Carter, greatest leader of the 20th century?

Good choice! :goodjob:

As for Kaiser Wilhelm, he did, in my opinion, a very good job when it came to leading his nation. Although, of course, you can feel free to disagree in however volatile a manner you feel like.

No he didn't, Bismarck made Germany, quite literally. Wilhelm took Germany, and sent it to the gallows. Wilhelm wasn't a leader, he was a child, who controlled an empire. Even then, he pretty much stopped "leading" in 1916.

Kaiser Wilhelm? :dubious:

Perhaps not the greatest leader, but you've got to rank Clement Attlee. Even if you're not a fan of socialism, he was a very efficient postwar Prime Minister.

Highly underrated.

Well Gandi deserves a mention. Noticable lack of dead people too, which is always a bonus.

I think murdering a crapload of your own people would disqualify one from being a geat leader, but thats just me.

Here is a list of some I think are worth mentioning:

Ferdinand Foch.

Winston Churchill.

Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Teddy Roosevelt.

Corporate: Henry Ford.
