Greatest RPG's of all time?

@ MajKira:

Regarding jRPGs: Maybe I'm discriminating against them, but I find the 'RPG' designation problematic anyway if there's little to no freedom in character progression and storyline, and I'm not fond of the genre for other reasons. I find the way combat is typically handled breaks immersion even if it's done well, and often they seem shallow and empty games. Nice visuals and an elaborate storyline are good, but if a game isn't mostly about gameplay I'd rather read a book or watch a film.

Mind you, western RPGs are by no means perfect. Too many feel like inferior action/squad-level tactics/whatever games that hide their mediocrity under heaps of garnish.
Of course, demanding solid core mechanics that would play well without the fluff, character customisation on top of that, a nonlinear but compelling story and production values to impress a modern audience is a tall order.

Regarding your English: English isn't my first language either (technically my 4th). Nobody expects perfect fluency, but it's obvious that you don't even try: I'd be nice to see less netspeak, more complete sentences and consistent capitalisation - you need considerably less than you do in German anyway.

Dragon Age II = best RPG ever, right after Mass Effect 2.

*everyone's heads explode*

And yeah, I've never been a fan of any JRPGs. I actually tried another one recently and after about 3 minutes it was too ridiculous to continue, so I quit the game and deleted it from the HD.

you mock on jrpgs and you mock on me
like crazy
what do you like in that, to sadism you like

To sadism you like? I'm struggling to understand what you mean by that and English is my mother tongue!

you like to be sardistic?
But I dont wanna play your victim
I hate sadomasochism

I feel threatned if you disrespect jrpgs

am I thinking false?

You feel physically threatened if a random person on the Internet says that they dislike JRPGs??

I think more psychologically than physically, since you dont get a snap on your face directly. But its a feeling like interacting with a thick wall and cant get to true talk and getting in virtual sense a smack

I think that perhaps you might be just a little over-protective, then. Someone saying that they find JRPGs to be boring, long-winded, repetitive, or 'all flash and no substance' does not in any way reflect upon you and should not treated as such.

yeah don't take things too seriously. I don't flip out when people bash Fallout: New Vegas which I love. It's a great game. It's a bit light on dialogue, but I love it. But it's not for everyone. Some people don't even like futuristic rpg's, and prefer them to all be medieval fantasy based. Other people hate it just because it's on Steam, or utilizes DLC.

And I wouldn't flip out if someone bashed Baldur's Gate 2. Actually I might say BG2 is a tad overrated. It came out in a time absent of any other decent rpg (except Planescape), and truly stood above the rest. But compared to later games, it did lack in options. But they were limited by technology at the time, so you have to give them a grain of salt.

am I thinking false?

Yes! Relax, its okay. I just don't enjoy JPRGs. Or a game like Madden. Or most racing games, or Football Manager 20xx and so on. It's just a personal preference. I'm sure there are genres or varieties of games you don't like, right? Some people are undoubtably fans of those games, and you're not trying to hurt them by saying you don't like them.

yeah maybe Im overexaggerating but yes feelings get hurt when someone says jrpgs are schidd and it would be an absolute truth. It sounds that way and not as an own preference.
And sure I have also my own preferences. I dont like most racing games, egoshooter, pure jump and running. If you just dont enjoy jrpgs, it sounds for sure okay. I myself too cant stay firstpersonview games I get sick of it like when becoming seasick on a ship.

Fortunately, all jrpgs I have played until now avoided any firstpersonview needed play, otherwise there would have been some jrpgs too I wouldnt like at all. I liked most of japanese styled RPGs until now with barely none exceptions. But Ys: The Ark of Napishtim for example dont liked either as an jrpg becuz you have to jump too many times. But Wild Arms series were okay even if there were the parts were you had to jump many times becuz graphic was better quality more detailed better later technology.

For my first ever post on this forum, I submit to you this list. Note: I love tactical RPG's the most, so my console picks will probably be weighted more heavily towards that subgenre than a lot of people's.

NES: I guess FF1? Not a lot of real RPG's yet, even FF1 I can hardly play, way too much grinding and the battles take forever.

Genesis:

Shadowrun
Shining Force 1 and 2
Phantasy Star 4

SNES:

Earthbound
Ogre Battle
7th Saga - lot of grinding but pretty quick battles so I like it)
FF6 - duh, the best in the series except for my personal pet favorite Tactics)
Illusion of Gaia? Barely counts as an RPG I guess but I liked it a lot.
Super Mario RPG - Can't believe nobody has mentioned it, really? Nobody else likes it?
Fire Emblem 4 - The whole series by and large is great but 4 is really the stand out IMO.

PSX:

Valkyrie Profile - probably one of my top 5 games of all time
FF Tactics
Breath of Fire 3
Suikoden 1 & 2 - Suikoden 2 probably my all time favorite console game
Chrono Cross - I liked it more than Trigger, I know I'm in the minority on that though
Legend of Mana - Liked it more than Secret of Mana, I guess I'm just a rebel
Lunar and Lunar 2 - gameplay wise very much typical jRPG but for some reason I just fell in love with the characters and stories in these 2.
Saga Frontier 1 - Interesting game... maybe not the most "fun" in the strictest sense but something about it just makes me feel like I have to list it.
Vagrant Story
Brigandine
Tactics Ogre

PS2:

Dark Cloud - I know it's not a real popular one but I really dig it
Suikoden 3 and 5 - My continuing love for Suikoden, 4 not withstanding which was terrible.
Suikoden Tactics - WAY better than 4, from whence the characters in it came
Dynasty Tactics games - Again these scarcely qualify as RPG's but I'm admittedly casting a pretty wide net here.
Front Mission 4 - I haven't played the others in this series but this one is really cool

PS3:

Well... Valkyria Chronicles was awesome. TBH the vast majority of my gaming now is done on PC, I grew up with consoles but graduated to the superior system. My PS3 mostly gets used for Rock Band now.

PC:

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
Vampire Bloodlines - Probably beaten this game from beginning to end more than any other game ever
Witcher
Morrowind
Fallout. 1 and 2 were the best, New Vegas was pretty good, even 3 was acceptable, though nowhere near the first two. I also like Fallout Tactics, it's an underrated entry in the series IMO, People expecting it to be Fallout 2.5 were disappointed but taken for what it is it's a very good game.
Deus Ex - Too bad the second one was such a tragedy of errors

And if we are allowing for Diablo style games:

Diablo 1 and 2 - Obvious
Titan Quest - Very good game that doesn't get mentioned nearly enough. Awesome class system with awesome story and greek mythology, there is no way to lose with this formula.

I'm sure there a ton that I'm missing but I've been typing this for ages and I'm done.

Welcome aboard. It's a good post, listing many different games and systems. You've played a lot. I haven't really played any rpg's on consoles, so my list was pretty much for PC.

As for Fallout: Tactics, I don't really consider it too much of an rpg (although you can tailor your character to a certain extent, so it loosely qualifies as an rpg). But I do agree Tactics is underrated. Yes it doesn't have the quests and dialogue that Fallout 1 and 2 had, but I thought the missions were pretty cool for the most part, and the combat was pretty good. Although I played the combat in turn based, I'm not that good at squad based real time combat (I never got very far in Commandos). There was some challenge to keep your guys under cover so they didn't get chewed up by bullets from enemies. Especially when you face mutants with Browning M2's. I loved it when I got the M2, however. It rocked.

Yeah I played it strictly turn based too, that helped fuel my perspective that I was playing a very combat focused RPG instead of an action game.

It is a great game. Including it in the running would open a can of worms to make me properly biased though...

1 Nethack
2 Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
3 Ancient Domains of Mystery
4-44 Angbang
45 IVAN
46 Elona (See, I'm not discriminating against Japanese games! Not even when they're weird and creepy!)
47 Dwarf Fortress (Adventure Mode)
...
101: Ultima 7
