Sure it is, when people can live from playing these tournaments, (Korea!!!), it is a sport. It's just not a physical sport. That's why I say you can define sport in the narrow sense, physical effort, but then I need to ask wether Golf or Dart is a sport? Or is the latter just a "Pub Sport", but there are Championships... So the line of distinction is not really clear. But yes, I use the narrow distinction mostly and of course if the talk is to encourage the youth to eat less junk-food and do more sport, we are not necessarily thinking of Chess...
It's just a case of the language not being really clear and the definitions varying. For example if you include the Social Aspect as something really important, then Chess becomes a possibility to "integrate" children. If it's more important to get them out on the weekend into a social environment, then why not Chess, or Counter Strike. Or Poker, though that might be for big children mostly.
You think chess is bad? What's the bet that someday we'll have something like this as an olympic sport: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWgg20IqibM
(and how do we insert videos?)
