[Guide] Mauling Deity

Taking something from the guide, and going a little off topic - stealing workers from CS's - I thought that produced "Perma War" with all the CS's you've met the second time you did it?

Have Firaxis changed that? Or is he not talking about the the implications of that in his guide?

No longer perma-war, but you no longer receive meeting gold from any CS (that's pretty irrelevant on Marathon anyway). More significantly, you will experience a permanent drop in your influence resting point with other CSs (but not always all CSs).

Don't steal your workers from multiple CS. Declare on one and keep stealing its workers until you have enough or get bored. 1 DoW on CS without capturing it doesn't inflict any penalties with other CS's.

Wow. Rule change and I hadn't even noticed...and there's me, being a good boy and only ever stealing one....gah.

Overall I saw some good points raised by the OP, his helpful intentions and the fact that you need to take into consideration that it's domination on marathon. Among other things that you can see as inefficient like the automated workers.

Fine.

I don't quite understand why it's necessary to gang up on someone - who is trying to help and in no way showing off - and beat him into the ground. If you want to point out mistakes, flaws and whatnot do it in a polite manner. The sarcastic, hateful tone of some hit and run posters is surprising to say the least.

It's only a game. Act as adults.

Well, while I can agree with your sentiments, you have to agree the title of the thread is somewhat misleading. If you were to follow his guide on standard settings at deity, the thread would be renamed "getting mauled on deity". And players far better than me, who can "maul deity" have been pointing out the shortcomings of the guide...I agree, it got a bit a tense during the last couple of pages. Which is a shame but that's what you get with such a title.

There was a bit of trepidation here because a certain person has made multiple troll accounts with "guides" lately and it's sort of become old hat. Combine that with the title and the lack of disclosure about settings and you end up with about what you'd expect. Letting people "play the game their way" is fine, no one's saying otherwise, but should a guide really encourage you to re-roll repeatedly?

Believe me I could have really savaged this guide but I decided to play nice

Yes apart from few posts this guide has received a lot of consideration and thoughtful critique. It would work well as someone pointed out as "how to get your first deity win with cooked settings but not as england on archipelago". It definitely made me question some of my assumptions and learn few things about marathon. But a useful guide to mauling deity it is not.

Wow.

And of course it's more than ok to have heavy criticism, include every tiny detail if you can. It's just that some people behave like jerks because they are anonymous on the internet. That gets to me sometimes. :)

edit: I just now subbed your channel by the way

How do you know these people aren't jerks IRL? :p

Seriously though, what do you expect? This thread indeed got a thoughtful attention.
The OP claimed
I give advices that work in all games, or specify if there is a chance of failure
and when people had pointed out that his guide would fail in 99% of the settings, they were called
close-minded pests

Just FYI, author of the last similar guide called those who disagreed with him (quote) 'Poop singers'. Patience running thin.

As for settling this dispute.
Once I get home I'll play the game from the challenge save posted by the other guy earlier, since it seems this fits the standards of this forum, and will post results and saves.
Then if you have complaints about this, you can go in the GotM forum and tell them their maps are obviously biased toward me because for some reasons I still win with my "suboptimal" strategy.
And it can't possibly be that one wins without using the "undisputable conventional gimmick made up in some forums that is obviously the only way to beat the game".
I can't believe you actually believe in that, but whatever.

Hopefully after I get this done you guys pull the head out of the sand and start realizing your way isn't the only effective one.

I'm betting this guy never posts here again. :nuke:

Moderator Action: Thread closed. All the speculation and reflection over the last page is really not helpful. Just discuss the topic or leave it be. If you have suspicions about a certain member, report them to the moderators, and we'll deal with the situation accordingly if there's evidence to support the claim. But public gossip does not help the thread at all, and just causes it to derail. This isn't helpful for anyone who comes to the S&T forum to learn about Civ5 strategy.
