H G Well's The War of the Worlds

In the book, which the mod tries to be faithful to, they never mention Martian commerce. So I think I will keep it as is. :D

But if you can give me a quote, i will consider it. ;)

It's from the book about the Second Martian Invasion :D

If you read the third book, you'll see the martians using prostitutes as their main income:blush:

No, but i kinda have a little problem, the DL always freezes with me..
It stops at different %, but it always stops at some point :(
Is there an other way to DL this?

Well since HG only wrote one book called The War of the Worlds, all others are wannabes and need to be ignored. ;) :D Even though his short story called the Crystal Egg can be construed as a precursor to The War of the Worlds. :)

@The Loser, no no other way to dl it, sorry bud. I won't put it up on DL hell, too much of a hassle.

@Kairob, HG only wrote the one.

@MC, thanks bud.

Updated the mod forum to include the Martian beginning save. At the worst it should only take 10 minutes to load the save game. It was saved just as soon as the game came up.

Will get to the Human Great Powers as soon as I can.

does the AI play with any skill or adept as the martians?

Unfortunately no. That is why I set it up to be played as the Martians. heck i have seen test games where the AI disbands all of its forces except for one fighting machine. And then takes 20+ turns to build up a force to finally conquer the British Isles. Stupid AI.

But the AI for some reason plays better as the humans, they eventually make those war and trade embargo treaties and actually give the Martians a pain with all their naval units and their bombarding.

Heck, I have even seen the Germans and Americans coordinate a great landing in England, against a human nation it would have been magnificient, but against the Martians, it just gave them a few more meals.

Looks like a very nice scenario. Too much for my comp tho.

I hope you're working on the Fallout mod too. :whipped:

Well, I am, of course, talking about The Second Martian Invasion, which is a book by the brothers (Arkady and Boris) Strugatsky. It is actually good in it's own right and really twists the whole context a bit more... H.G. Wells' book is a bit more romantic.

In this one the Martians take over the government and... noone really notices any real difference (possibly because the old government was a bit corrupt anyhow), although there are still some people running around trying to fight the "oppressors", normal folks regard them as somewhat silly. More cynic than War of the Worlds, and maybe a bit more blunt as an allegory (and of cause allegorising completely different subjects).

Oh and the Martians pump their citizens for digestive acids (it's like giving blood though, you get a bit of money and you're not allowed to sell your acids too many time since they need to regenerate).

Whoa!! It look very interesting!! and promissing!!

Unfortunately, I'm unable to run it: the game freezes when the scenario is launched... (or maybe I have to wait longer for launching, i.e. more than 10 minutes..)

I hope I will be able to solve that issue...

The game freezes up on me too! I need help! I want crush those puny earthlings.

Mmmrrrr, and that is the whole problem with those imposters. ;) They totally change what HG wrote into something of their own. In HG's book, the Martians are not out to take over any human agency, they had one agenda, Extermination of mankind and the colonisation of Earth since Mars was slowly dying.

I am glad you enjoyed the follow on books by the other authors, but this mod will remain faithful to the original. :D

Gents it is NOT a freeze. The scen has ALL 512 cities out. This is an accurate map of 1895 Earth with accurate OOBs. It has a huge DB so even on my hog it takes 5 minutes to load the sav game, and 20 minutes to load the scen from scratch. :crazyeye: 3.2 gb 64 bit Athlon processor, 1gb ram and 250 gb hdd. So anything less is going to take a while to load.

One way to tell if it is a freeze or not is to try and move your mouse cursor, if it moves, the scen is still loading. If not then it truly has frozen.:)

Can't wait to give this another spin! My old comp was a pII 450 Mhs with 384 ram, it took about 11 hours to load, and crashed to desktop and froze the machine when I took a new city. Killed me because I always LOVED this book.

Now I have a dual-core athlon xp-64 4400 with 4 GB ram on a TB of SATA drives. Might perform better. :D

@AmesJustin, Use the save game, it should load in about 5 minutes with your rig. And I eagerly look forward to any comment you have on it. :)

Sweet! Thank you. I had a feeling it was map/city related... :)

Lord Malbeth, np.

Folks, here is something to think about. Playing as the Martians the game actually gets faster the more humans you kill and the more cities you raze.

The last test game I ran before I posted it once I had wiped out Europe it began to run a whole lot faster.

So as our lovable Bender says in his dreams, "Kill all humans." :D

OK, I love this scenario. The wait is a little long, but it does get faster. You really got the feel of the book in there.

I love the unit choices: I really LOVE how Capt. Nemo makes an appearence. I bet he's happy that England is where the Martians landed. ;)

Anyway, I noticed a few minor bugs. Some of the civilopedia entries have slight miss-spellings, nothing too big, and the Red Weed, for instance, isn't Red in the Civilopedia. I've fixed most of these things, I could post a patch if you wanted me too. :)

Thanks again. :D
