Hall of Fame Rules/FAQ

Using MapFinder I generated a bunch of maps (over 20K) searching for a Chieftain level huge map, playing as the Mayans. I've selected the one I want to use (capital has 5 cows & a river & city #2 has 4 cows & 2 wheat). Since I've already got one entry on the top 10, I'll probably only play this one (due to the 2 per player limit). I'm wondering if I could offer the other quality (2+ cows & a river) starts to the other players. I could upload the starting jpg & sav files and they could be used on a first come first serve basis.

I've been combing the HoF threads for an answer for this denyd but I cannot put my fingers on the thread where this was discussed. I'm 99.75 % sure that this is not legal. although you might want to wait before you trash the files and let Dianthus or Superslug chime in on this one.

I'm not sure why it would be illegal (though it probably is). As long as there's only one attempt per map and there is no pre-knowledge of the map. All the new owner would know is the starting point and the opponents, there is no other infomation to be gleaned from what I would post and the map would be for a single user only.

Is there any rule about soliciting advice from others on a HOF game?
Good heavens! There is no such rule and never will be. The educational value of the Hall of Fame is it's greatest attribute. Some players come in here already great, but most get great after they start HOF play.

It's crazy, I can't find it either, but I did rule that sharing Mapfinder starts is against the rules. It wouldn't technically violate any of the coded rules, but it comes so close to several of them that I'm uncomfortable with the idea. Especially since Mapfinder is available to practically anyone. Granted it runs slower/faster depending on the machine, but with the right settings and enough nights, anyone can strike gold on their own.

I can see no issue with doing that. IMHO it is what makes this forum great. That people are willing to post suggestions and hints on how they get their amazing scores and dates or ask for help if needed.

That being said I don't think we want to get to the point of having HoF attempts run like a SG or HoF by commitee but I can't see a problem with what you want to do.

I am not interested in games run like a SG. I do not participate in those as I do not have the patience. I usually know what I want to do, though in some cases it is good to get other ideas and see if they can be incorporated into my plan.

Ok I posted a question in strategy & tips: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=137525

I understand about the potential pitfalls of the grey area of sharing game starts. Too bad I won't be able to share starts like though

I doubt a situation like that could even happen in the HOF forum. I've seen occasions where a poster would get too dependent on advice and the HOFr's would back off and make the player realize they still need to make their own decisions.

That's the great thing about our players, helpful, but not too helpful. :goodjob:

Looks nice. $10 says it's a tiny island. :D

Actually it ended up being at the top of the continent and I had to get through Greece (who else  ) to get to the rest of the land. Also ended up with Portugal controlling the only ivory, so they had to go before mathematics show'd up.

I'll have this one done over the weekend. I don't think I can beat Misfit's 10 AD domination date but I should be able to take over the #2 spot.

A question for those out there, do you abandon an excellent start like this if you don't get a couple of SGL's? I managed to get one with CoL for ToA, but am hand building Pyramids unless I get lucky in the next 2 techs (15 turns).

Some are no help at all!

I've got a rules question that I've just thought of in my current game. Despite playing on a pangaea, one AI is on an island, making conquest take a bit longer as I need a boat fleet. The rules say that palace jump is allowed. Am I still allowed to jump my palace if it also happens to jump the majority of my units from one island to the other, saving me from building more than a couple of boats? Can't find anything either way in the rules.

Yes, that variant of palace jumping is legal.

I got Civ3 complete:lol: , will that be an acceptable version for the HoF?

Yes, absolutely!

Did I beat my record response time?:mischief:
EDIT: Darn. Five minutes too slow.

Don't know if my original question was clear enough. I'm about to submit the game, but what I did to win it feels very exploitative. I'll start a new thread with details and pictures though. I have a feeling it should be added to the rules/faq pages either way. Admittedly I'm struggling to think of a time when teleporting 50+ mounted warriors from one side of the map to the other can help you get a really fast date, as it's far slower than actually finding a map that doesn't require it, but it certainly makes a given game finish quicker.

Sanabas: I just finished a similar game (Pangaea, 80% water) that ended up with only 4 of 8 opponents on the home continent. Unfortunately for me the I was unable to reach the final on until Navigation was discovered even with the Great Lighthouse. By the time I found him I had about 20 caravels with 3 MW each on the seas (poor seasick ponies) that converged and quickly eliminated him.

It was :). I've updated the rules to try and make it clearer:
Palace Jump (Civ/PtW/C3C)
Disbanding or otherwise losing your capital will result in the Palace being relocated to another of your cities. This is can be used as a "cheap" way of:
 1. Relocating your Palace.
 2. Teleporting troops from your old Palace location to the new Palace location.

Does that help?

@Dianthus: #2. above: Are you sure?

How do you accomplish that?

I know you can "gift" a city with units in it and they will teleport back to your Capital City........But, from one capital to another.......?! :)

I guess you mean teleporting from a non-capital city to the "New" Capital City location AFTER moving the Capital? :)
