Handy 21 Regular Pangaea AWD again

I am thinking that all we still need is steam for a nice RR system to finally wipe out the enemy. With Cav armies and rails we should be able to rule the world.

By the way with Leo we won't need that much money for upgrades, 15g a knight isn't that terrible.

Agree with that. After we upgrade to cannon & cav turn research back up to get to rails. Leo's will help a lot with the cannon upgrades.

It occurs to me Rat that we are more interested in this game than the rest of the team because  we don't have C4 yet.

I don't have C4 yet either, but it still is facinating.

Rat - Thanks for Chichen Bugza

Own - Why are you guys always jinxing us saying this game or that game is already won? We haven't met the Vikings yet and we are as thin as thin can be.

lurker's comment:

Just a quick note to say I have followed this adventure with mounting excitement and great interest.

IBT- Lose a pike to MI (who loses 2hp) at Eastern Shores. Portugal makes a follow-up landing with a LB. French knights and LBs moving in our direction. (0-1)

Turn 1 (560AD) Kill the MI. Elite knight kills the LB and we have Blue-Quetzal Macaw. I think that’s Mayan for Cav army. ;) On the west front are the French. Bombard and kill pike, knight, knight, knight, knight, knight. German LB. Roman spear. German musket and LB pair dispatched by knight army. Kill 2 pikes and a spear but lose an AC at Geaghe. LB remains. Iro musket and pike killed and Cattaraugus is ours with a pult. (17-2).

IBT- French knight dies against our pike at Calakmul. Roman LB dies against knight army. (19-2).

Turn 2 (570AD) Spear and LB go down and Gayaghee falls with another pult. Iro spear dies against knight army at Akwesasne. 2 Iro pikes die to AC army at Owego. JT army kills Roman LB. Knight army kills French LB. 3 French and German LB killed by Bremen. Have to move the knight army away from Frankfurt to deal with a French knight trying to sneak in through no-mans-land. Dispatch it. Elite knight loses 3 hp, but kills French redlined LB. Two more French knights spotted. Kill Roman archer by Eastern Shores. Must have oil or something. (32-2)

IBT- Lose a musket and knight while France loses LB. (33-4).

Turn 3 Akwesasne has two spears destroyed by our knight army. Auto-razes. German LB killed by JT army. Owego auto-razes after LB killed. At Ganogeh, kill reg Iro pike with AC army. Reg spear showing. Kill 4 Roman LBs and a spear in the west. Kill 2 French knights. Kill German LB and pike by Bremen. And then get Portugese LB by Eastern Shores. (48-4)

IBT- Lose another knight to a Portugese knight. Military Tradition in. Astronomy in 6. (48-5)

Turn 4 (590AD) Ganogeh reg spear dies to AC Army and it is ours. Gewauga has two spears lost to our AC Army and autorazes. Kill 2 Roman LBs and a spear by Frankfurt. Settler is in the mix, so 2 more workers. Roman spear by Orleans goes. Kill 2 Roman LBs by Frankfurt. Back to Ganogeh, there are 7 Roman LBs next to it, and the AI may try to take it out, so I move the army into the safety of the mountains and fortify, then abandon the town. Portugal tried to slip in a settler pair around Eastern Shores. Dead pike to our elite cav and 2 more workers. (58-5).

IBT- Roman 7 LB stack heads towards Piedras Negras.

Turn 5 (600AD) AC Army now doubles back towards the LBs as they’re off the road. Also vector in the new cav army from the other direction. Knight army kills reg musket in Leipzig and it falls. Then kill an adjacent German LB for good measure. JT army kills a German knight but the army is pretty beat up. (61-5)

IBT- Lose a couple foreign workers out in no-mans-land, but no troop losses.

Turn 6 (610AD) Kill Roman and Iro LB by Cattaraugus. Reg musket and spear die and Caughnawaga autorazes. Kill French pike and LB by Grenoble. Joan has her iron hooked up again. Elite*MI kills Portugese MI. Roman and French LB die by Leipzig. Cav kills reg Portugese pike by Eastern Shores. Cav army kills reg French pike. Kill a redlined German LB by Bremen. Cav kills Portugese pike and knight army kills MI. (75-5)

IBT- Grand River flips back to Iroquois.

Turn 7 (620AD) Two spears and a LB die at Bremen. That one will not flip. Burned. :p
3 Roman LBs killed by AC army by Cataraugus. Rome loses 2 spears and a LB to cav army. Portugal loses MI to cav. Converge a couple more armies at Cattaraugus and finish off the last 2 Roman LBs. Knight army kills German LB.

That has effectively eliminated all AI units east of the new defense line except for the hold-out Iro towns. :D Move the knight army to re-pillage Joan’s iron. (88-5)

IBT- Worst news so far this set. Joan’s workers are wearing a new outfit. She’s gone industrial. :(

Turn 8 (630AD) Kill a reg Iro musket and spear. Capital burned. Crusader kills Iro LB. His capital is back to Grand River. All he has left besides that is Kiohero which I believe is that town north of Orleans. Send the cav army to Grand River to attack it next turn. Kill Roman LB by Eastern Shores Abandon Leipzig. I don’t like having armies as garrisons and that is about all we have at the moment. (92-5)

IBT- How nice. A Roman settler pair with spear walks right up to the front door.

Turn 9 (640AD) Grand River has 2 defending spears vs cav army. Implement Anti-Flip Directive 666. Bye-bye. Kill Roman settler pair with cav. Knight army by Grenoble kills reg Portugese MI. Kill Roman spear. We have a French rifle now at Grenoble. Aha! French think they’re cute and snuck in a settler pair in the fog south of Niagara. That costs her pike, LB and settler. :p Knight army kills Portugese MI. (100-5)

IBT- Astronomy in. Science to 80%, banking in 4.

Turn 10 (650AD) Kill Portugese settler pair in the east. Kill 9 French LBs and an Iro one in the west. Portugal loses pike and MI. (113-5).

Post-turn. Well, we have the short front now. We also have 10 armies, but I am keeping 2 on full time shore patrol in the east and south. In fact, we really need a third to adequately cover these settler landings. Either that or about 5-6 single cav in lieu of a third army. That last turn was nice as we had 7 armies available along our new front and could beat up the AI without risk.

We should probably get on the move fairly quick against Joan. I upgraded most trebs and some cats to cannon so we should be able to do some adequate siege warfare where rifles are defending. We hadn’t even done the Heroic Epic, so I started that in CI, due in 8. Rushed a number of settlers for small change, and need to do that where we can to continue to fill in the holes.

I am very interested in how to cope with Vikings. Which is better, guarding every coastal city by 2 units, or just giving them up and retaking?

Good work - I am guessing we have half the world or so when we fill in the rest of the land.

I think we should build a market in the Capitol before we build the Heroic Epic.

Also as luck would have it, I find both this game and GR8 to be as interesting as the Civ 4 games.

I keep wondering if the Vikings didn't start out on their own little island somewhere. In any case, I don't think they will be strong. Otherwise we would have met them (they would be trying to claim the empty land if they were strong). I suspect we will have little to fear from them.

lurker's comment: Amazing game guys, I didn't think it was possible to win a game like this :D

I was also a bit puzzled by the lack of Vikings, if they were on the same landmass as you there should have been at least an exploring galley by now so I would guess Greebley is correct (its the conclusion I came to :) ). The problem with this is it's not a proper Pangea map and you will all have to play a new game on a proper Pangea map

BTW I like the kill ratio in the last set of turns 113 to 5 :goodjob:

Nice work. :D

1. Handy
2. ThERat
3. Greebley
4. M60A3TTS
5. Obormot :D
6. Bugs

Too bad we can't build Javs anymore, or we could harvest a ton of slaves with cannon & LB versus LB. May as well allocate our Jav army and any remaining ones to the choke areas to act as slave makers.

Cannon & army stack should be able to take out Joan's cities. At this point we may want to consider leaving a single string of Joan's road network in place so our cav can move faster - selectivly pillaging resource, lux and food to shrink city size below 12. Slow moving steamroller of cannon, armies and single cav should easily waste Joan. Weigh station on a hill or mountain somewhere that cav can safely spend an IBT on the way to catch up with the armies would be a good idea.

We might want to consider building a few ships to see where the Vikings are. We don't need to make contact. It would also give us some geographic intel. Unortunately, no one has published Handy21 Geographic magazine yet. :D

I just assume that the Vikings are marginal and pretty small, all the others know them already, so they can't be that big.

Btw, Obormot seems busy and requested for a swap in Gr8, maybe Bugs can take this

And to Tomoyo, this game qualifies for the legendary games, doesn't it? ;)

I have it. I've only had one trick or treater all night so it doesn't look like I'll be distracted too much.

Pre-flight – 650 AD – Very nice progress since I last played. I switch a little city to a caravel and rush it for 120G.
Rome – pretty much tech parity with 14 cities. No iron.
Iroquois – tech parity, no resources, OCC.
Germany – tech parity, no salt or horses. Two cities.
France – tech leader, 18 cities, no iron, doesn’t have mil tradition.
Portugal – tech leader, 12 cities, no horses or salt.

I like all the Copa cities and the Copa HQ. :D

IBT – Two Romans are dropped off next to Eastern Shores. Two French LBs are killed at a choke point and we lose a musket.

660 – Use a knight army to kill one spear in the Roman city of Caesaraugusta. Our navy begins exploring the seas. Change Jaen to a caravel and rush it. Kill the two amphibious Romans. Science drops a notch.

IBT – The Feench send many units forward. The Romans send three defenders out of Caesaraugusta. :smoke:

670 – Pick off a few strays. At Caesaraugusta, kill two defenders and…
Handy21_-_Caesar.JPG

That picture gives a pretty good look at the northern portion of the front.

After Greebley’s mongo-map AW game, checking the cities is easy.

680 – More picking off AI units.

IBT – We lose one half of our navy to a Fench caravel.

Banking =>Physics Due in 8.

690 – Found Copábormot. @ Heidelburg – Our AC Army kills the three defenders and Bismark is now playing a OCC.
Handy21_-_Heidelburg.JPG

Collect a German settler pair.

IBT – A French LB visits Eastern Shores. It is becoming quite the tourist attraction.

700 – A boring turn. Here is the situation in Germany:
Handy21_-_700_AD.JPG

Trick or treater total: 3

To be continued…

IBT – More Roman tourists at Eastern Shores.

710 - @ Nuremberg – kill the two defenders and…
Handy21_-_Nuremberg.JPG

Which means…
Handy21_-_Germans.JPG

Found Marshán.

Lose a cav at Eastern Shores, knight retreats.

IBT – Kill a LB at eastern Shores.

720 – Picking off units on the northwestern front, Eighteen Rabbit appears
Handy21_-_720_Leader.JPG

He forms the 2nd Cav Army.

I have our wounded cav army climb a mountain to heal and look what we spot…
Handy21_-_Vikings.JPG

I’ll heal up the army first, but we need to decide if we want to go meet the Vikings.

To be continued…

I thinkwe are more than prepared to meet the Vikings, even if we could lose a coastal town or 2.
It is better to have an idea how many cities they have, and to get them into war mode to slow them down as well.
I would also try and take out the Iro's. In one of the screenies I can spot the border of their last town. Take it out!

I would suggest we leave the Vikes alone for now. I agree that they are not likely to be powerful. They already have contact with our other mainland friends, and if they haven't arrived at our shores already, from a tech standpoint they are already slowed down. Let's stay focused on what we have in front of us.

IBT – We complete the Heroic Epic. I start on the Military Academy.

730 – Found Scoutopán. Playing zone defense in the north. Move out units in the south towards what is left of the Iroquis.

IBT – Portuguese tourists at “The Shores”

740 – More of the same. Zone defense in the north, marching in the south. The Portuguese built an east coast city. Retreat a knight, kill one defender.

750 - We arrive at the Iroquois capitol. Start moving towards Scandanavia. More zone in the north. Kill another defender at the Portuguese city, but it still stands.

After Action:

Here is the north with the AI tracks. I think a fort and barricade at the red “X” would make a nice gauntlet while we raise hell elsewhere:
Handy21-750_North.JPG

Here is the south. Building a road along the black line to get through the jungle quicker.
Handy21-750_South.JPG

The east coast:
