I still don't understand why it's called so. Is it Canada Independance day? Don't think so. Something special?
And tomorrow it's my bday hehe. I'll surely invite Stormerne for a drink. I'll think at you all too

PS: Also seen on Google

How old is our honorable neighbor to the North, officially?

Happy Anniversary, Canada... may you remain as a single, strong, united country despite the efforts of some (who don't appreciate the English language as much as they should) within your own borders!

Okay, to answer several Q-tions....

GenghisK: Its sort of an "independence" day, but not because we beat down the English, but because it was the day they forfited official control over their "Canadian" colonies and left us with self governance. A few of the colonies, I mean. Not BC, Manitoba, Ruperts land, or the Newfies.

Starlifter: We're 134, if my math is right. Confederation was 1867.

And A of A, the Whinemore is obviously an illegal migrant or something, because nobody that weird is permitted up here! We send them down to the states eventually...

National Anthem of Canada

O Canada!

O Canada! Terre de nos a?eux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!

Car ton bras sait porter l'?p?e,
Il sait porter la croix!

Ton histoire est une ?pop?e
Des plus brillants exploits.

Et ta valeur, de foi tremp?e,
Prot?gera nos foyers et nos droits.

Prot?gera nos foyers et nos droits.

O Canada!

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Is Canada day seen as a day of patriotic celebration or just another public holiday?

Could someone answer I'm also interested.

Here is some interesting facts about Newfoundland:

1) In roughly 1855 Newfoundland became it's own country...independent of Britian, and with it's own Resposible Government.

2) In 1934, Newfoundland gave up it's self-rule, due to huge debt and became a British colony again.

3) In 1949, Newfoundland joined the Dominion of Canada and became the Country's 10th province.

Most historians would agree with me that I've OVER simplified Newfoundlands history....but this is basically what happened. If you would like to see most info visit: http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/3330/constitution/

I'm so tired of being tired... Sure as night will follow day... Most things I worry about, never happen anyway...

The quebequois mustn't like "newfies" alot since the newfoundland province took Labrador from Quebec.

Re the public holiday - patriotic celebration question.

Canada Day is a day of patriotic celebration for many, but not all, Canadians. However, we generally tend to be more subdued in our expression of patriotism than our southern neighbors. The one excpetion would be when one of our hockey teams is playing Russia or the USA in world competition. Then we tend to get quite expressive of our national pride.
