I'm thinking about renting this movie when my girlfriend comes back from her family vacation this week. Is it any good? Both of us like movies related to the civil war.

I've seen it, it was pretty good, I'd give it a 5 or 6 out of 10.
Not much about the civil war per se, more about the little town.

Long, long, long. A little dreary, but not overly. Somewhat romantic, I suppose, so not bad for a date movie. Everything seems very authentic, and the setting is very fleshed out, which made it interesting to me. The actors did a great job, also. I'd give it a 6 or 7 out of 10.

It had Nicole Kidman in, therefore scores a minimum +2 bonus points IMHO...

She did an excellent job, and I've really been impressed with her before.

It's a good movie to see with your girlfriend. It's mostly a chick movie, but there's some action at times, so you wont fall to sleep.

The book is better...but when is that not true? :mischief:

Don't waste your time. We rented it last weekend, and only watched the first 40 minutes or so. The problem was that as a 'relationship movie' I couldn't relate to any of the characters, while as a 'war movie' there was not enough historical context.

If the time period interests you at all, it will probably be worth your time and dime.

The battle scene at the first of it is wort it! :goodjob:

The book originally had more battles but for some reason they were taken out in the movie.

Yeah, that first battle scene is pretty hardcore. Too bad there weren't any more. But I suppose the crux of the movie was him deserting, so I don't think it suffered too badly without more battles.

Not to mention that she was a little bit nekked in this one.
