Part of the reason I hate Metro is also the fact I never got the appeal of SmartPhones or tablets that much. I would rather have a laptop and stick with my cheap prepaid cellphone. I also do not like touch based input. I like using the mouse, on a PC still the most efficient way of doing stuff, at least for me. I just think putting Metro on a PC is pointless, Metro in itself seems like a decent tablet or SmartPhone interface but seems useless and very pointless on a PC when I can just my desktop. Why would I want to use a SmartPhone app on my computer when I can run a much more capable desktop program? Despite any improvements it has, customers are not buying Windows 8 because of Metro UI. Windows 8 is going to be Microsoft's New Coke.

I like Windows 8. All my friends from those that can barely turn on a PC to those that can build a PC like/love windows 8.

Tommy Vercetti, I think it's just you.

Windows 8 sucks if you don't have touchscreen. I don't want a full-screen start menu unless its handy for 'touching' it. So I don't see the added-value of Windows 8 above Windows 7 unless your computer is touch ready.

However, Microsoft's ending is far from near. They could easily focus on the business segment should their consumer products fail, and they still have the Xbox. If I am not mistaken, business is where the buck lies.

Value-added: Better task manager, better file copy dialog, better multi-monitor support.

Again, I'm using Windows 8 on a triple-monitor non-touchscreen setup, how exactly does my experience suck compared to Windows 7?

You only named two of the start menu replacements there are A LOT of them. At least 10 of them. So there is a good amount of competition there. The fact so many of them exist should tell you something.

There are also 50,000 varieties of brown cola. Guess how many of them are rivals to Coca Cola? What does that tell you?

I an posting this reply with Google Chrome because I can
no longer access CivFanatics using MS Internet Explorer 9.

In my opinion, Microsoft stumbled and I agree with the OP's points.

You see, for much of my life, I had been a loyal Windows user until Windows 8 is released!

Ever since Windows 8 had been released, though I have resisted getting a Mac for many years of my life due to its costs and its "weird" features, out of spite, I decided to get a MacBook Pro with Retina Display (it would also allow me to play Civ V without Steam legally as well). Ever since I got a MacBook Pro with Retina Display, I converted into a loyal Mac user immediately. I never looked back since (and I am extremely happy with my MacBook Pro with Retina Display).

Windows 8 is only good with a touch screen in my opinion and the Mac is the lesser of two evils for me.

Do you guys have anythougts?

A simple one: good riddance.

They should have gone with Xenix instead of the "windows" thing. :p

This is honestly where everyone is going, Microsoft just made it there before Canonical, Google and Apple.

Really? I'd say it made it there so brilliantly that even Canonical (!!!) may soon have an OS shipping on more mobile devices than Microsoft. What is Windows Mobile? The thing that killed the number one mobile phone company!

Start menu replacements are not very popular.

Windows 8 use: ~45 million
Classic Shell has ~2 million downloads

So... that means there are 2 million possibly satisfied Windows 8 users. And 43 million frustrated users who daily swear at Microsoft!

And Zelig, who is on a class unto himself. :p

Don't worry, I hear that you can call any program by writing its name. Which is a relaly sane way to design a user interface on a device that you are selling as ready for keyboardless devicess with thouchscreens.

That certainly doesn't seem to be backed up by any data: http://www.zdnet.com/just-how-much-do-people-hate-windows-8-7000013319/?s_cid=e539

And I'll pose you the same question I posed the previous poster: What problems am I supposed to be having, using Windows 8 on my triple-monitor non touch screen desktop?

I am guessing you are a rare exception that likes that Metro crap. Trust me when I say this you are part of a vocal minority. Most of us do not like Metro or the start screen. Before you ask, I use my start menu frequently. I pin programs I use the most often to it and I prefer that to pinning to the taskbar because I don't like cluttering up my taskbar. Considering Windows 8 adaptation rates are below that of Vista should say something. Putting an interface intended for a SmartPhone or Tablet on a PC was just a bad idea and will go down in history as one of the worst ideas in the history of computing. I doubt Windows Blue/8.1 is going to save this doomed OS. There has been a lot of criticism of Windows 8 not just from users but from corporations and the game industry. Rob Pardo, Gabe Newell and Markus Persson are all among the critics of Windows 8.

You are not supposed to have any problem. You live inside a reality distortion field that rivals the one of the late Steve Jobs. Windows 8 is perfect. Windows Mobile is perfect.

Here is some real food for thought about Microsoft's current situation.

I have been saying that for a long time when discussing this with people here. Poor sales of Windows 8 and Windows RT should say something about Metro. Microsoft needs to just pull the plug on Metro UI, at least for the PC.

I don't use Metro.

You're in the minority.

Considering Windows 8 adaptation rates are below that of Vista should say something.

It says that people are buying more smartphones and tablets than they are PCs compared to when Vista was released.

Good thing Metro is optional.

I don't think Windows 8 is perfect, and I've never made any such claim, it simply isn't worse than Windows 7.

You linked an article about Windows RT, are you confusing that with Windows 8?

I have been saying that for a long time when discussing this with people here. Poor sales of Windows 8 and Windows RT should say something about Metro. Microsoft needs to just pull the plug on Metro UI, at least for the PC.

You realize Metro is optional, right?

Just look at the sales and adoption figures compared to Win 7 and Vista. You can say there are less PC sales overall, but its like at 1/4 of what Win 7 adoption rate was at the same point after release. No one is buying it and if they claim like 100 million sales or whatever, then some people are downgrading after they get a Win 8 machine.

Good thing Metro is optional.

Yeah, and they should have made desktop default with Metro UI as an option.
