Nooo! I didnt even kill any aliens, Resurrect me or somthing

Journal- 1 Aug ‘99

Well, this is it. What training I received at the facility in Vancouver is now coming to the test.

I bid farewell to my family not over 3 days ago. It already feels like it’s been far longer. I flew to Puerto Rico, then to base ‘Shangri-la’.

It was on the flight that I finally got to meet my team. It seems that they all have similar experience to me, so I shouldn’t need to fear about being vastly behind them, skill-wise.

The group seems to be nice enough. I don’t yet know everyone well, and I have been told that making friends is bad in military situations. But I think it gives me more trust in my fellow soldiers, and will aid me in fighting.

I sat next to someone called Swiss (Odd name, then again, I know a girl named Venice… maybe it’s a naming trend). He seems quite friendly, though possibly slightly unstable. I hope that’s just his sense of humour.

Upon arrival at Shangri-la, I also got to know my fellow Troopers. There’s Jo, Emu (though for some reason, he insists I spell it with a small ‘e’), and Warman. I didn’t get through much more than introductions and a message about protocol before we were shipped off to the USA for our first mission.

I was shocked to discover, in-flight, that there was not enough armour for us. As all the armour fit other people, I was chosen to go armourless. Days like that I sometimes wish I wasn’t 6’4”.

We landed, and I went out first to cover the advance of my armoured colleagues. I immediately saw a Snakeman, for the first time in person (I’d seen them on TV before). With me out, Warman and a sniper named Jay followed. They fired on the alien, but missed. Then, Wubba emerged from the craft and fired a rocket straight at it. Alien guts all over. Jo saw a UFO, and we followed him to it and another Snakeman. Jay sniped him before a fight broke out.

I heard an explosion behind me and spun to see Warman finish off an alien with plasma. That was the end of the mission. We scanned the area for more aliens but found none alive.

Journal- 3 Aug ‘99

After a day training and getting to know my squad better we were called on again. Somewhere in Northern China.

Once again, I was first one out, though this time I was fitted with armour. I saw a Muton and fired immediately. Too immediately, for I didn’t aim well and the shot went high. My second did the same. Warman came out after me, but Jay killed it before the troopers could take it down.

We couldn’t see any more enemies, so Jay, Jo and I set out from the ship to search. Jo saw an alien (Muton). I charged but it noticed me. The hedge covered it from my fire. A snipe (from Jay I think) missed as well, nearly hitting me. The alien was about to fire when a bomb burst behind it. The alien made a sickening sound and dropped to the ground. I blasted it a few times for good measure.

We then closed in on the UFO when something fired at me. I dropped for cover, and watched another blaster bomb destroy the farmhouse that had fired at me. I must find out who is firing those and thank them.

All of the ground troops surrounded the UFO, while two flyers (Swiss and Emu) flew in. At the sounds of a fight Jo and I broke in. I saw a Muton, took careful aim, and fired. It screamed and dropped dead. Jo’s did the same. I quietly celebrated my first kill, my first move towards the safety of earth. There were no more living aliens in the ship.

Journal- 5 Aug ‘99

We had more time to train yesterday, and I think my shot is starting to improve. Oh, and the person firing the bombs was Wubba. I thanked him, but he’s cool about it. Great guy.

Our next call was a landing just north of Prince Rupert, on the Alaskan border. Worryingly close to home.

It was quite dark when we came out. I marveled, as I had years before, on the beauty of the great forests. Then, the sound of alien fire brought my attention back to the current situation. I looked up to see emu, trailing flames, crash facefirst into the ground. I stifled a furious shout and took cover with the rest of the force. Wubba fired a bomb, but it didn’t kill anything. However, it helped to light up a Snakeman. Jay killed the damned thing. It died quicker than it deserved.

With no other aliens, we closed in on the UFO. We once again attacked in two directions. I followed Jo in. We got surprised by Snakeman, but he kept in complete control and fired first.

We swept through the craft, and I found Wubba lying on the floor. I thought he too was dead, but the other guys on the squad insisted that he was just unconscious. We made the stunned Snakeman next to him pay for emu’s death.

I am now one of the 3 remaining troopers in our group. I’ve got a minor promotion, but it doesn’t matter too much to me.

And I have heard rumours of a new group being sent out. Maybe they will join us, maybe they will form a new group. I’m not sure, but I wish them good luck.

Awesome, Lord_Iggy! i loved reading your war diary!

Okies, Nuclear Kid will be added, and emu will be resurrected :)

Played more today, will post update after this.

@Daft; how, exactly, does one get armor? . I don't see it for sale anywhere. Also, do you have AIM/MSN?

you have to research the armour... Which makes your guys very vulnerable at the start. Seems like one hit from anything will kill them instantly.

Once youve recovered some 'alien alloys' from a UFO crash or landing, you can assign scientists to research the 'alien alloys'. After thats done, you can research 'personal armour'. And then you have to use the engineers at base to produce it.

To research powered armour, you also have to research 'alien power source', which involves getting a pretty-much-intact UFO. I think you might also have to research the 'elerium 115'.

Im not actually sure when flying armour becomes available. I think you might have to research more UFO components, or it might be from the autopsy of 'floater' and 'cyberdisc' aliens (both are flying aliens).

where did you find it for free?

I downloaded it from (edit, link acutally posted!): http://abandonia.com/games/en/38/UFOEnemyUnknown.htm

Its a respectable abandonware site, nothing 'warez'. As for being illegal, i guess it is, but not sure if theres anywhere you could buy it... The game is 13 years old! (originally came out in 1993).

This zip also has a special patch thingy for winXP compatibility - run the yellow 'UFO' icon instead of the other one, otherwise the graphics are all messed up.

Actually, im not sure id reccomend the game to anyone who isnt fond of old-skool suff. I guess it will take effort to get into at first, especially if your confronted with dated graphics all the time.

Who did I kill? And do we have unique appearances in the game? What do I look like?

You killed a Muton the other day, those guys in green suits. They are about the toughest alien soldiers to kill, and good shots too. I dont like them :p

Theres only about 4 different appearances for agents, 2 sexes each with 2 skin colours. and strangely, the details change depending on what armour you wear. So its not really unqiue :)

More troops are beginning to arrive. So far, we have the new troopers: das, Reno, and Dreadnaught, and the new snipers: jalapeno_dude and Banana P Lee.

More weapons and powered armour arrive at Shangri La.

UFO Recovery: Large Scout UFO / Mutons

More Muton activity in asia. Another tricky nightime mission in a forest. The Mutons are hiding in shadows and blending into the background. We don’t want to lose more troops like emu.

sneakymuton.jpg

No armour is supplied for new trooper Dreadnaught, and he has to hide in the skyranger for most of the mission!

Wubba360 loads up with a chaingun firing incendiary ammo. Firing in random directions creates usesful illumination.

Banana P Lee claims his first kill, with help from jalapeno_dude. jal later gets his first kill, with quick reaction fire after a Muton showed itself. Promising young soldiers, these guys.

Shots fly out of the darkness as the team struggles to set up a perimeter.

mediheal.jpg

JosefStalinator is caught in a crossfire, hit by three separate Mutons from three separate directions. But he stays on his feet! LittleBoots tends to his injuries, and he then personally gets revenge on one of the offending Mutons.

medihit.jpg

More kills for j_eps, and another Warman17. Swissempire also gets his first kill, shooting down into the UFO through a large hole in its roof.

UFOholed.jpg

Reno and das enjoy a scenic tour of the slightly-on-fire Siberian wilderness. An uneventful mission for them.

renoscenic.jpg

Later, (edit:Luckymoose) is first into the UFO. A Muton is sighted, but the others take care of it.

More kills could have been claimed, but annoyingly some of the Mutons didn’t quite die before the end of the mission.

promotions.jpg

Thankfully no XCOM deaths this time, but brave JosefStalinator was seriously wounded, and the docs say that he is out for a while. At least he managed 4 kills so far, equal with j_eps as the best score at this point.

Engineers in Puerto Rico complete another ‘Firestorm’ craft, a hybrid of human and alien technology. It is soon transferred to Shangri La to boost our defences over asia.

Later, the rest of our new soldiers also arrive at base. Some of the original squad members are given a break, while the newbies prep for action.

squadlist.jpg

Research is also completed on the alien ‘mind probe’ device. Hopefully this can open the door to our own psi-training in future.

UFO Recovery: Large Scout UFO / Snakemen

overmex.jpg

Not much to say about this mission. Another battle with Snakemen in north America. No casualties.

One snakeman takes 1 plasma rifle and two heavy plasma hits, and continued fighting. These guys are tough!

A couple of our own soldiers stand out : andis-1 claims two kills with his hi-ex heavy auto cannon. One in a farm building, and one inside the UFO.

farmboom.jpg

Sniper Banana P Lee also finds himself in position to add two more kills to his tally.

XCOM’s defences are tested to their limits. UFOs make a big assault on the southern hemisphere, where we are weakest. An alien battleship almost destroys one of our interceptors from our Australian base. We track several large UFO’s as they land in Antarctica – it seems they are either building a base there, or already have one in operation.

battleshipantartica.jpg
(Intelligence suggests this is an alien battleship)

Then we shoot down several UFO’s over water, off the coasts of Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Later, another UFO wave over Africa. This time, we intercept them over land – a supply UFO is shot down over South Africa. That nation has already stopped its XCOM funding, but we cant afford to miss out on the salvage from such a large UFO. XCOM high command decides that our rookie team is ready for a new challenge. This is the biggest target they’ve had to face so far….

UFO Recovery: Supply UFO / Snakemen

Due to mix ups at base, trooper Dreadnaught still hasn’t got armour! He is left holding the rear again.

Soon after landing, it’s a first kill for Reno.

Later, Reno spots another alien hiding in an orchard, in an area we thought we had cleared, almost snuck up behind us. Reno fires, but cant kill it. jalapeno_dude and others try to blast it, but also fail.

Terrish tries to take it out with a rocket – it goes astray and blows up infront of our guys! jalapeno_dude is slightly injured in the blast. tossi finally takes down the alien, claiming his first kill.

oopsboom.jpg

Then there are kills for ‘Circon’ and andis-1 as we storm the entrance of the UFO. It’s a big three-story craft.

As we prepare to breach the second level, an alien suddenly appears from the grav-lift and shoots at tossi. It misses him, but hits Imago – who is luckily saved by his heavy armour. Before the alien can fire again, Terris uses his quick reactions and blasts it dead.

We split up and take the other two levels at the same time. The top floor seems empty. But our team on the second floor is ambushed as soon as they exit the grav-lift. Luckily, its only a stun blast again. Reno remains conscious, and takes out the slippery snakeman. Littleboots is soon on the scene, reviving people with stimulants from the medikit.

stunning.jpg

After that, there’s no real resistance from the aliens. The last one seems to have panicked and dropped his weapon! ‘Circon’ shows no mercy to the alien scum…

Haha, did I get promoted for being KO'd?

Have you personally declared vendetta against me or something?

Its not my fault :p The game forces you to equip armour before the soldiers leave base. You equip weapons when you land, but cant choose armour. Dont ask me why! Anyway, I keep forgetting to do it before i send off the skyranger :(

Haha, did I get promoted for being KO'd?

Dont ask me how the promotion system works either

Who is luckyboots and why am I not killing things.

Luckyboots is an experimental genetic hybrid cloned from... well actually i meant LittleBoots :) both are same kind of soldier, both begin with L, both are two syllables...

You havent killed anything because you've been acting as back-up and havent been needed yet. I can change your guy to a 'trooper' or something if you want to get into the front line.

Can you make me a sniper?

Can you make me a sniper?

ok sure!

i cant get online during the daytime. Ill probably play some more tommorrow and post another update tommorrow night.

1 Aug ‘99 Journal Wubba

Came here lately. Wasn't doing to well in school, actually was suspended for beating up some kid. The kid was a dick anyway. Instead of going back I joined this war. All big guns.

Some of the guys seem nice. I try to stay to myself. I spend my days cleaning my weapons. The other boys are more into that sleek running. I was actually a big man on my track team, until my suspension.

Anyway, this guy, emu came up to me. We had a smoke, and played some cards. He is a nice guy. Turns out the guys engaged to some gal back home. She was pretty smokin', fine lady he has.

So we went out. The other guys rushed out there firing at anything that moved. No efficiency I'll tell you, I got out a little later, pulled out my big guns. I locked onto the little bastard and blew that mother ****er to bits.

We continued forward, we were being shot at by some barnyard animals and I blew up the fireworks. This guy Warman killed it. Nice guy, a little cocky, but he is a hell of a card player and I respect that.

The other snipers and useless guys are cool, this Swiss guy though seems a little annoying. I don't know how we will work together, he's one of those rich types.

3 August 99 Wubba

Seems this job only gets harder. I have become the teams back up it seems. I also got this new shiny weapon. I have come to be good friends with Boots and Moose. We work good together. We usually hold back, so we get some chat time. Seems Boots is an expert on the Bruins. Big hockey fan that one.

So we kept going, Iggy got shot at and I layed one bomb into their heads. I got three kills, but the commander would n't give em to me. I would have beat the man if emu hadn't controlled me. We have become pretty tight now.

Anyway things seem a little creepy now.

5 Aug 99

We land in some forest. It was dark. I couldn't hear anything. I carried my cross in my hand. Given to me by my granpa. When he killed nazis. Anyway, It was silent, I could hear rustling, Emu looked at me funny. I turned around to look over at Boots who gave me the sign it was all clear.

Suddenly blasts came I started swaring as everyone ran for cover. As I turned around I saw Emu fall to his knees. All bloody he just sat up, I couldn't look. He stared at me, looking at me, like he was sorry. Another blast came and he was gone. I fired with every inch in my body. I missed, but I saw the killer, J eps took him out.

We charged across the land looking for those bastards. As we stormed the UFO I left my launcher and pulled out my pistol. Therte was no ****ing way I was going to be left behind.

Next thing I know I wake up in HQ, turns out I got hit with a stun rifle. We won I guess, but there was no coming back for Emu.

13 Aug 99

I have become bitter. I have warmed up to the rest of my men, but my buds death is still harshe. I drink to much and got careless. Picked a fight with some of the new recruits.

I got my machine gun and I have been managing as I can, Josef got hurt bad, I talked to him though and he sounds alright. I told him we missed him out there.

He is a nice guy. I keep him company when I can.

We got these new recruits, some of them though piss me off. Especially my new Heavies. These two boys seem less able to fire a gun than anyone else. andis and terris. Andis has good precision, but this terris I don't know. On one mission today he got careless.

He fired his shot and it went amiss and could have blown jalepeno, another recruit, to pieces.

When Terris came in on a stretcher having been stunned I grabbed him and threw him against the wall. That sure woke him up

I told the bastard to get his act together. I wouldn't let him out on the field again if he got careless like that again.

You can get careless with aliens, not your own squad mates.

I would have kicked the crap out of him, if it weren't for boots and Iggy holding me back. I made quite a scene today. The commander yelled at both Jalepeno and Terris for keeping their wits about, I was told I was on two day probation. The bastard.

I went to my room for a smoke. Then I visited Josef and told him what had happened. I had some beers with Moose, Swiss, Warman, and Boots, we played some pool. The commander then told me I was on probation, and sent me straight back to my quarters.

I waited until Imago, my new roomate got back. We talked a bit and I went to bed. Hate thinking my friends will be out there maybe without me there.

Ack forget this ever happened

So, which mission was I in? I assume nothing much happened, but I'd like to know for another story.

13 August '99

I've finally got the chance to write about what's been going on here, the first few days here have been hectic and you never know what's going to happen when you go on a mission.

I was with the second group of new recruits to arrive, can't remember much of the flight to the base with the exception of me sitting near this guy named das, he seemed reasonable. Haven't got a chance to get to know anyone else yet.

The life at the base is quite strict, although it does feel great to be part of the XCom interception team, you never know when you have to go outside on a mission again, the alarm might sound at any moment. And these people don't wait around if you're late.

Before we got on our first mission, we were told that a recruit from the first team of new arrivals, someone named emu, got killed.

When it was time for our first mission, I picked out a laser rifle for myself, which pretty much stood out from the standard plasma weaponry of the other troopers. However, if the laser rifle has one benefit, it's that you never have to reload it, and I was sure that that advantage might some day just be what saves me on a mission.

On our first mission, while the rest of the team whent to clear the UFO, me and das were ordered to scout the surrounding area. Nothing really happened in that mission on my part. Although Stalinator nearly died, he's going to be out of action for a while.

But. On my third mission, as soon as our transport craft touched the ground and we were sent out, I managed to shoot one of those snake aliens. I've never seen a creature so disgusting. Some of our team got into a serious mess, when a rocket went astray and nearly killed one of our own... *sigh* Who was in charge of that guy's training...

When we neared the UFO, I saw for the first time how huge that piece of junk was. The first floor and the exterior of the craft had suffered some damage, but as we stormed inside, the interior was undamaged. The guys at R&D would get some new specimen carcasses and new material to study on.

We decided to clear the two remaining floors in groups of three. I don't know who were sent to clear the third floor, but it turned out to be clear. Me, Symphony and Terris were sent to the second floor. As soon as we hit the second floor, we were bombarded with blasts of seemingly pure light, I and the other two were hit. Symphony and Terris were knocked out by the energy blasts. And although I didn't feel any real pain, I was barely left standing, and without thinking I raised my laser rifle and shot the alien to pieces. Then I checked up on the two others, and to my relief the Alien had only used stun blasts. Soon after Littleboots arrived and, using stimulants, got both of the recruits back into their senses.

The rest of the mission went easy, there was only one alien left and he had semingly lost his will to fight. He was excuted by 'Circon'.

I'm not sure of what will happen from now on, but seeing real action does make a difference to the seemingly peaceful life at the base.
