Neat reports.

Who is this "Circon"? Initiate renaming procedures!

circon is erik mesoy.

I like those stats so far, but I want to get more kills! I give you the permission to make even somewhat risky assaults into ufos so that I can massagre them all at close range. Btw this game got me to download UFO:EU once again...

[OOC]This does belong in the NES section now that everybody is writing stories. :D[/OOC]

I'm at base - it's early August, and now I'm going to help save the world.
I spent a long time training at base. Didn't even know about XCOM until recently. I always hung back, training some more, trying to get that elusive perfect score on the range, wearing power armor for another hour to get used to the weight.

Then I came out here as part of a squad of six. Me, Imago, Tossi, Symphony (or just Sym), Terris and Andis. My real name, the one the commander will use when shouting "Private!" is Erik Johan Mesoy, but everyone calls me Circon. Long story.

I'm trained like heck, and wired on nerves - I've been imagining aliens for hours now. Reality can't be as bad as my fever dreams.
---
I've met the local old hands now. Sarges Reno and 'Banana' Lee look like the ones I could learn the best from. They're serious and descriptive. Wubba ('three-sixty', they call him) is pretty cool too. He was the first one of the group to shoot an alien. I quizzed him extensively. Maybe he got annoyed. Now I know more about the aliens.
---
Prep for action! We're moving out. I grab weapons, armor, comm headset, everything I'm supposed to have. I check the list before moving out the door. Maybe I'm obsessive, but I've got everything ready well ahead of the others. Anyway. We're being dispatched to Mid-Mexico against some snakemen.

I wonder if it'll be like I expect? Probably not. There will be a UFO landing in the middle of nowhere. Probably a nearby farm, maybe even a village, all panicked. Commando action. Snakemen are tough. I'll have to shoot straight. I know I can do it - it's just that I don't know if I'll get the chance.
---
UFO, barn, forest, late evening. Me in the front line. Taking shots where I can, moving carefully. The adrenaline rush isn't like I expected. I think it was Warlord Sagan who described what I'm feeling - not a fire fueled, but rather quenched. We attack the barn. Andis kills something with an autocannon. I hold back, under orders to keep myself in one piece first and kill things second. Fine. The barn is clear. We regroup. The UFO is targeted. I wonder why the aliens aren't massing up and/or sending more elite units. A snakemen takes multiple plasma hits and keeps fighting. I figure these might be their "elites" who are almost unkillable. Messieur Banana kills it at range. I flash him a thumbs-up. We clear the area. We assault the UFO proper. Andis kills another snakeman.

My adrenaline goes into overdrive. I remember little of the rest of the day. I remember that I was shooting - hitting the target, but the wrong part of it, and I had little impact.
---
Back at base, the other team of vets is just leaving, for somewhere between Antarctica and Australia. My adrenaline surges are catching up with me - ARGH! Will have to go sleep. And quickly.
---
We're leaving again now, a while after the vets returned. We're headed to South Africa. Wonderfully scenic country.
---
Battle time. I'm running on high, feeling like I'm drugged on some kind of steroid - time is passing slowly around me. Reno kills something. We're shooting and being shot at. I feel invincible, like I could dodge bullets. Terris tries to fire a rocket at an alien, and I seem to see the projectile firing slowly... it's misfiring, but I can't speak quickly enough to warn anyone. Jalapeno "Dude" takes some shrapnel to his arm. Tossi kills the alien. Time warps back to normal as we clear the area and prepare to assault the crashed UFO itself. It's humongous, the size of a building. I say "oh dear", not swearing with the ease of someone who's spent years not swearing, as adrenaline catches up with me far too early. The aliens are coming out. I'm *this* close to panicking. Then the shooting starts. I grin mentally as my hand comes up and begins firing. Old reflexes are kicking in, and it doesn't matter that I'm almost locked out of my own body. I kill a snakeman with two well-placed shots to what passes for vitals. Good old training. We charge, clearing the first "level" of the UFO quickly.
---
Split up. I'm in a group headed for the second floor. Some others will be clearing the third floor. I can't help wondering if this is a good idea. We are ambushed as the "lift" opens. The aliens are using mostly stun blasts and I'm not even hit. Littleboots applies medikits to the ones knocked unconscious. Reno takes out the ambusher. We go on the offensive. I find a snakeman - DEATH. The alien scum collapses on the floor.

Easy as that, it's over. No casualties - the third floor was empty. We being stripping out valuable alien stuff. Some alloys, some elerium, and the most valuable things being the alien power sources and navigation equipment. I wonder how I'll do next time. So far I've killed three aliens. I'm doing well. I almost wish I had gotten even more practise in, as these aliens take a lot of killing, but wishing has no result. I'll make do with the skills I have, and they've borne me out so far...
---
I receive a commendation when we return. I catch myself thinking it's par for the course, but of course nothing is when we're fighting aliens. Nice to get recognition. I consider getting drunk, then reject the idea. Instead I decide to eat something sugary to get energy back. No chance of getting fat the way I'm working, is there?

[OOC]Have downloaded the game, will try now![/OOC]

wow, nice !!! I loved reading these journals! (i wanted to post various smilies in this sentance but it would take me over the image limit ^^)

emu is back, and andis-1 will be more violent!

@Lord Iggy, you were in the first of the missions i posted about last night (the one in the siberian forest at night) and you're in all these following ones...

---

13th August, 1999

As Skyranger 2 is returning from africa, it is joined by an interceptor jet and the new ‘Firestorm’ fighter craft, which have just been out shooting down a UFO over the Indian ocean.

XCOM is busy. Skyranger 1 is also in action, as the team from Puerto Rico clean up another African crash site. One of the troopers is seriously injured.

Meanwhile, an interceptor form ‘Xhosa’ base in southern Africa is sent to patrol over Antartica. Our suspicions are confirmed - aerial recon detects an alien base close to the south pole. XCOM’s veteran squad will attack it soon.

seebase.jpg

Meanwhile, more soldiers are being transferred to Shangri La – sniper Nuclear Kid, and trooper emu! Although clinically dead for some time, emu’s internal organs were kept in good condition, and his life was restored by XCOM’s scientists using alien tissue-regeneration technology. emu is back, but is not quite the same. He has lost all memory of the missions he was on, and starts over again…

arrivals.jpg

And, after six missions without shooting at any aliens, Luckmoose asks for a more front-line role. Although Luckymoose lacks the ideal qualities for a trooper -accuracy and good reactions - psychological tests have put Luckymoose’s bravery level higher than most soldiers. XCOM commanders decide to give him a chance to prove himself as a trooper.

14th August, 1999

Shangri-La’s ‘Hyper-Wave Decoder’ finally goes online. With this billion-dollar gizmo, XCOM scientists hope that we can listen in on alien comms, and get extra information about their UFO activities.

Meanwhile, XCOM commanders decide to give most of the newer squad members a break. Most of the original team is rotated back into combat duty, ready for the next mission.

14th-15th August, 1999

Our Hyper-Wave decoder picks up its first transmission! And its not good! an alien battleship, crewed by fearsome Mutons, on an alien retaliation mission in siberia… It is either searching for the nearest XCOM base, or it already knows where it is, and is heading to attack – Shangri La! We’ve already repulsed alien ground assaults on some of our other bases, always at a heavy cost in lives. We’d rather intercept the aliens in the air.

spycode.jpg

We scramble two jets and one firestorm from Shangri-La. One jet is also scrambled from our base on Cyprus. Then we even scramble our other firestorm from Puerto Rico. Five XCOM craft are now in the air trying to bring down this giant UFO.

At first, it’s a disaster – the short-range firestorms run out of fuel before intercept. Hours pass as the battleship cruises over Siberia, dodging our slower jets. Finally, as it slows down, our two jets from Shangri La are able to make a cautious combined attack, but both are damaged and forced to bug out…

tracking.jpg

We cant let the aliens detect our base! Luckily, our firestorm at Shangri-La has now had enough time to refuel, and is scrambled again. The tough little craft finally brings down the battleship with its twin plasma cannons. It goes down over Russian soil.

Russia won’t be pleased if we cant clean up this mess. Normally we would send in our veteran team from Puerto Rico, but they are already in the air over the south atlantic, en route to attack the alien base in Antarctica. Its down to our rookies to secure the crashed alien battleship…

Forest, Siberia, 04:25 GMT, Sunday 15th August, 1999
UFO Recovery: Battleship UFO / Mutons

This will be the toughest mission yet for our squad! If we can handle this, we can handle pretty much anything.

emu is first out, spotting two Mutons straight away. Lord_Iggy follows emu out, and opens up on one of the Mutons with a hail of rapid fire, eventually killing it. Warman17 is next, and empties three heavy plasma rounds into the other Muton before it falls down. Area secure.

Or, not. emu moves forward under the Skyranger and sights a third Muton nearby - The landing site is crawling with them! emu opens fire. A shot hits, but the Muton just turns round and fires at emu – luckily the Muton’s shots bury themselves in the ground or in the side of the Skyranger. Then j_eps fires from behind the skyranger ramp, getting a good hit and taking down the Muton.

Slanding.jpg

As the team spreads out, we sight a strange hot blobby thing (we think the eggheads back at base call these things ‘silicoids’). The Mutons seem to take these things around with them. The other XCOM team sighted them in Novosibirsk during the Muton’s terror attack there. It is hardly visible beneath the flames it causes as it burns the surrounding vegetation.

hotgoo.jpg

emu hits it, and Warman17 finishes it off. It looks disgusting as it bursts open and collapses into a puddle of boiling goo.

Suddenly, a plasma blast vaporises the tree trunk behind which das was taking cover. With quick reactions, das returns fire and hits the offending Muton, but it simply scurries off.

das.jpg

Later, we hear a massive explosion somewhere nearby, probably inside the UFO, and hear the death-screams of at least one alien. It seems one of the Mutons had a ‘slight accident’ with a blaster-launcher. Very lucky for us, as a blaster bomb impacting near the skyranger could have taken out half our squad at this point.

We get a good look at the UFO. It’s a very wide octagonal craft with two main levels, resting on a further five ‘pods’ at ground level. Some of these pods by themselves would be the same size as the smaller UFOs. Plenty of room for aliens to hide in.

xcommapy.jpg

Half the squad continues to sweep through the hills and forests in the west, while the rest close in on the ‘pods’ at the base of the ufo.

While moving into a sniping position, Nuclear Kid sights the Muton that probably shot at das, but doesn’t have time to fire. das moves up and personally finishes off the Muton with two more hits. First kill for das.

Luckymoose also gets his first kill, blasting a Muton near one of the UFO’s landing pods.

As we get underneath the UFO, the extent of the damage becomes clear. There is a gaping hole in the first floor, and we can see right inside. There seems to be a lot of death and destruction, but something is still alive up there. Scans show movement, and something is taking pot-shots at us.

Meanwhile, our sweep of the surrounding area is completed. Only one more Muton is found outside. It seems to be injured and in a state of confusion, so the team use it for target practise. Wubba hits it several times with a laser-pistol as it tries to hide behind a tree. Dreadnaught finally puts it out of its misery.

haplessmuton.jpg

The team get ready to board the alien battleship. There might be a valuable alien commander somewhere in this UFO, but the alien containment facility is still not quite ready at Shangri La base. We have containment at Puerto Rico, and scientists there are already ‘probing’ some captured aliens. So, its shoot-to-kill.

gogogo.jpg

It’s a real mess in there. Big chunks of wall and floor are missing, alien bodies litter the floor. Lucky that Wubba has a flying suit today, or some parts of the battleship would be pretty much inaccessible.

getinshipmessy.jpg

Through holes in the floor, Warman17 sees a Muton hiding back down in one of the ‘pods’. It a difficult shot. Warman hits it, but Lord_Iggy finally takes it out.

Our team is vulnerable as they exit the grav-lift. A Muton jumps out from behind a door, and opens up on the crowd of soldiers. It seemed like Warman17, das, and emu were all hit, but somehow nobody was even injured – probably a combination of luck, heavy armour, and a weaker alien weapon. The Muton dies in a hail of rapid fire from emu’s gun.

das and Warman17 then tackle a flying blob – also known as ‘celatid’ or ‘flying kidney’– before it can spit its deadly goo at anyone.

celablobby.jpg

Brave Nuclear Kid decides to check out the top level on his own. While he’s in the elevator/grav lift, a Muton opens the door and looks in. Apparently, the Muton doesn’t see Nuclear Kid in the corner. As soon as the Muton leaves the room, Nuclear Kid jumps out and quickly blasts it dead. That’s another first kill. Reinforcements rush up to the top level to help out.

NK1.jpg

Back on the second level, Luckymoose goes exploring in dark creepy places, while Lord_Iggy checks out the funky alien décor… seems like this is where the Mutons have their retro 70’s disco nights. But nobody is about.

niceroom.jpg

And that’s it. Most of the aliens were probably already dead when we arrived, or killed themselves with the blaster launcher explosion we heard. Still a tough mission though, and very lucky that nobody was even injured.

ratingexcelbat.jpg

Time to call in the demolition people to dismantle this hulk. Not as much useful salvage as we’d hoped, due to the poor state of the craft. But a big confidence boost for our soldiers. They are now real competitors against XCOM’s Puerto Rico team.

Part duex

Somewhere near the South Pole, Antarctica, 16:45 GMT, Sunday 15th August, 1999

While Skyranger2 was on the way home, Skyranger 1 was arriving at the alien base in Antarctica.

baseassault.jpg

Alien bases are always weird and creepy. Puerto Rico team fought its way through hallways filled with human body parts, and areas overgrown with strange alien plants. Just like the ones they’d seen before in Siberia and South Africa.

alienbaseantart.jpg

The ‘Floater’ race was running this base. These guys are probably the most goofy aliens, but still deadly. They have anti-grav unit instead of legs, allowing them to fly. They are fairly easy to take down, but are quite accurate with their weapons if they get a chance. Their big furry friends are also dangerous at close quarters.

gtankvreaper.jpg

Puerto Rico team suffered two more serious injuries, which might have been fatal if not for the quick attentions of the medic. They then closed in on the alien control room, hoping to capture the alien commander, but again the aliens seemed to have an accident with a blaster-launcher (either that, or it was a deliberate act of self destruction). A massive explosion was followed by several more, as a chain reaction seemed to destroy the base control computers... All while our guys were still some distance away.

abd.jpg

A nice victory, lots of salvage and lots points for our monthly rating - which might help impress the governments of Australia and Argentina. And, we have saved Antarctic wildlife from harassment by the aliens.

Our Shangri-La team was told the news. They might be called upon to tackle the next alien base, if and when we discover another one.

---

15th-19th August, 1999

There was a couple of quiet days, with little UFO activity. A couple of UFO’s were completely destroyed, and no recovery was needed.

Researchers at Puerto Rico finally got around to working out how the alien plasma pistols work. We can now use them on missions.

Meanwhile, engineers at Shangri La started working on a new toy for our squad – a laser tank. It would take some time to complete.

By this time, sergeant jalapeno_dude was all patched up and ready to go. This allowed tossi some time off.

selectsquad.jpg

Finally, another small scout was intercepted shot down over Africa…

kinshasa.jpg

Jungle, outskirts of Kinshasa (Zaire/Congo border), Central Africa, 01:14 GMT, 19th August, 1999
UFO Recovery: Small Scout UFO / Mutons

Compared to the last mission, this was quick and fairly easy.

Imago geared up with some seriously heavy firepower for this mission, but in the end he didnt fire a shot.

imagohvy.jpg

Obviously, night-time in a jungle is not great for seeing things. But the dense vegetation actually works in our favour, making it impossible to see far in the best of circumstances, and reducing the alien’s advantage from their excellent night vision.

Our team spots a Muton as soon as the landing ramp is down. Lord_Iggy steps out to get a better shot – only to find another Muton lurking right next to the Skyranger! It fires at Lord_Iggy several times as he jumps off the ramp, at least one shot hits, but doesn’t cause injury. Lord_Iggy kneels down and opens up with his own auto fire. The Muton dies quickly. Somebody (probably Dreadnaught) then took care of other the Muton we had sighted in the first place.

iggyargh.jpg

The rest battle was quick and chaotic. Wubba sprayed the jungle with incendiary rounds, the best way to light up the darkness and flush out the Mutons. Only one more was found outside the UFO, jalapeno_dude knocked it unconscious and technically couldn’t claim a kill, even though it later died anyway.

We closed in on the small UFO as the jungle burned.

gojunburning.jpg

Wubba went in through the roof, and found himself face-to-face with the surviving occupant! Wubba had hi-ex in his gun and couldn’t fire so close without injuring himself. Warman burst through the door, but couldn’t fire for fear of killing Wubba too. Luckily, Warman was able to dodge to the side before the alien could react, and was then free to shoot.

Wubbaargh.jpg

And that was the end. The UFO was pretty messed up, and only a few scraps of alien alloys could be salvaged. Hardly worth the effort and the risk. But perhaps it will improve our ratings a little amongst the African members of XCOM.

Now it was time for another troop rotation.

Awesome work daft!! :goodjob: I'd like in on this please, make me a heavy trooper just to be unique! :D As my name bears witness I shall paint the walls of the UFO's with the red crimson blood of the foul xenos!! Oh wait... do aliens have red crimson blood!! Oh well, whatever, let the killing begin anyway! :p Thanks a lot daft!

These aliens have a variety of foul odourous liquids for blood. Im sure heavy trooper KrimzonStiker will spill some soon :)

I think it's kind of funny that absolutely nothing positive or negative happened to my Heavy after two updates. Great work, by the way. You're the only mod who can sucessfully update two at the same time. :goodjob:

(And yes, this is a NES, I agree with Erik.)

Warman burst through the door, but couldn’t fire for fear of killing Wubba too. Luckily, Warman was able to dodge to the side before the alien could react, and was then free to shoot.

AWESOME

amazing, love the style, i think people should keep making their personal journal entries for some updates, it allows for a more inside look at each soldier, rather than just how many aliens he kills

I know I will!! I've already got my character mapped out, just have to wait for an update. ;)

Whoo! Got my first kill!

Oh gosh I love this! I even downloaded this and started playing it again. Btw, could you give me a (heavy)plasma rifle, I prefer it's accuracy and deadlines over other weapons.

I've started playing. So far I'm in April 99, have two bases (Europe, USA), two under construction, one team of good men with power armor, and I've cleared out my first battleship.

I seem to be stuck on research. Power armor is as far as I've gotten. I notice you're up to flying armor or whatever.

Right now I've got a terrorist attack in Jakarta to deal with... yay, shiny new power armor. The enemies are snakemen, for the first time so far.

When do I get to pick Troopers and Heavies and whatnot? Right now I have only soldiers.

Oh, and why wasn't I here? :p

thanks for the compliments!

Kal'thazar will be a trooper if thats ok, need more of those

ok sure thing!

Erik Mesoy said:

Theres not any speicifc types to hire, all rookies seem to have randomised stats. They are all standard soldiers, I just called them 'troopers' or 'heavies' etc based on what stats they have, so i remember how best to use them in the mission.

edit:
Oh, and why wasn't I here?

Too many troop names to fit on one screen!

I seem to be stuck on research. Power armor is as far as I've gotten. I notice you're up to flying armor or whatever.

Ive forgotten the research tree since playing it years ago. I dunno what leads to flying armour exactly. Im just kinda randomly researching stuff in my game :)

Well, decided to post a mini-update. Played one mission today.

Heavy trooper KrimzonStiker hasn’t arrived yet BTW :(

19th-20th August, 1999

A quiet spell continues. XCOM commanders take time to reorganise things. More armour is shipped out to Shangri La.

Our researchers make progress with the interrogation of captured aliens at Puerto Rico. We gain some more info about the origins of the alien menace.

AlienOrigin.jpg

Troops are rotated and given a break. Most of the newer members of the team are prepped for action, led by Sergeant jalapeno_dude.

Early on the 20th, we detect a scout UFO, and decipher its hyper-wave transmissions. It seems the Mutons are still looking for the exact location of Shangri La base.

UFO106.jpg

An interceptor quickly scrambles to take it down. But before its intercepted, it flies over Tibet and comes very close to the base. They’ve probably located us now. Anyway, the interceptor finally manages to catch up and quickly shoots down the scout.

UFOhit.jpg

The skyranger is sent out to mop up the crash site. It takes less than an hour to reach it.

Team for this mission:

Sergeant jalapeno_dude (S), 2/4

---

Farmland, Southern China, 8:19 GMT, 20th August, 1999

We don’t have to look far to spot the aliens. Three are plainly visible as soon as we touch down.

NKsee3.jpg

Reno and tossi take out one each. Symphony D. and jalapeno_dude use flying armour to get ontop of the skyranger, from where they have an excellent field of fire. They both open up on the third alien hiding in an orchard. Symphony only managed to clear the vegetation out the way. jal finishes it off.

Another Muton appears from a small farm building, takes a pot-shot at us (over the corpse of another dead alien), and then hides again, leaving the door opnen.

IMAGbfore.jpg

Imago lays a blaster bomb in through the door. No alien is surviving that! (well, sometimes, but not often)

IMAGafter.jpg

Reno sights another Muton further back, just next the UFO. Its an awkward shot at ground level. Symphony and jal fire from the Skyranger, but neither hit after many attempts. It’s actually the worst piece of shooting we’ve seen so far! Its just not the snipers’ day.

snipersmiss.jpg

Reno takes matters into his own hands, and finally takes down the target, firing through a couple of windows. Second kill today for Reno.

Renosee.jpg

Another Muton walks out infront of the UFO. This time, Symphony hits the mark, and claims his first kill, technically – the alien is still alive, as we would discover later…

The area seems secure. Imago blasts a hole in the side of the craft so we have two entry points.

Then, the alien that Symphony shot earlier on suddenly stands back up. Luckily, it makes no attempt to grab its weapon. It seems confused. LittleBoots takes care of things, gunning down the wounded Muton with a hail of laser pistol shots. First kill for ‘useless’ LittleBoots.

littleBkill.jpg

We prepare to storm the craft.

From our experience in dozens of missions, it seems the last few aliens always lurk inside their UFO, waiting to ambush our soldiers. So nobody is really expecting it when a Muton dives out the main door and fires a rapid burst of plasma at Reno!

Renohit.jpg

Trooper Reno is knocked out, his armour saving him from otherwise certain death after several heavy plasma hits. The nearby soldiers instantly fire back. It’s a suicidal move by the Muton, as it is hit by the reaction fire of three or four different troopers, taking multiple plasma and laser hits. It falls down, also unconscious (the team would later make sure it doest survive - the old excuse of insufficient alien containment is used again…)

The door closes again.

LittleBoots rushes to the scene. Reno has a serious bleed in his left arm, and is moments from death. LitteBoots plugs the holes using the medikit. Reno remains alive, but is unconscious and in a bad way.

Renostats.jpg

Angered by Reno’s near-fatal wounds, the rest of the team quickly storm in. The last Muton is hit by several troopers before finally being gunned down by tossi.

tossifin.jpg

Kills are awarded for Nuclear Kid, LittleBoots, Imago, Reno (2), jalapeno_dude, tossi and Symphony D.

The top brass are generous this time. It seems both Symphony and LittleBoots have a kill recognised, despite both taking down the same alien at different times. And Nuclear Kid is awarded a kill, most likely for the alien that shot Reno, despite it officially ‘surviving’ at the end of the mission.
