Alright you've heard of the Mayan Long Count, the world is going to end on December 22, 2012 blah blah blah and all that (though according to wikipedia it's wrong and the world will end on October 21, 4772 AD, not that I believe a word of it of course). Anyway, most people agree this current long count started in 3114 B.C. Now I want to prove the accuracy of the Mayan prophecy :mischief: so my question to you: did any significant historical event occur in circa 3114 B.C., specifically anything relating to the end of the world. Thank you.

Looking for history in 3114 BCE is tough. Cuneiform might be that old, but I'm not sure if even Egyptian heiroglyphics & Chinese turtle shells are that old. Certainly, the alphabet hadn't been invented yet.

Egyptian hieroglyphs seem to have existed by that time,

http://www.omniglot.com/writing/egyptian.htm

"The earliest known examples of writing in Egypt have been dated to 3,400 BC. The latest dated inscription in hieroglyphs was made on the gate post of a temple at Philae in 396 AD."

wiki

"For many years the earliest known hieroglyphic inscription was the Narmer Palette, found during excavations at Hierakonpolis (modern Kawm al-Ahmar) in the 1890s, which has been dated to circa 3200 BC. However, in 1998 a German archeological team under Günter Dreyer excavating at Abydos (modern Umm el-Qa'ab) uncovered tomb U-j of a Predynastic ruler, and recovered three hundred clay labels inscribed with proto-hieroglyphs, dating to the Naqada IIIA period of the 33rd century BC."

Mayan calendar was created later than 3114 BCE, but as you know it's unknown why they chose that year as beginning date. At least Ussher's chronology had some solid backing and evidence for starting at year 4004 B.C. ;).

I doubt you'll ever find anything on that exact date. Wiki's 32nd century. Several intresting stuff happened there. :)
I guess the start of Kali Yuga is about the only "apocalyptic" even that happened.
But don't let that stop you. I'm sure your imagination can connect the succesor of the Scorpion King, the construction of Stonehenge, Krishna's big war and death, rise of the Minoans, Enoch and the esoteric teachings related to him, and the mayan calander.

I could sure come up with a few stories uniting those events. :)

EDIT: crosspost

Or you could just accept that the Mayan Long Count was simply a calendar used to distinguish the shorter term calendar that the Mayans used.

Sorry. :p

The Mayan Long Count began around the time when Egypt was united. If there is anything to the calendar, it means that the world is going to pass into a new age in December 2012 (it doesn't literally mean that the world is going to end). We'll know what it means, if it means anything, soon enough.

Maybe the aliens will come back to bring us into their inter-galactic empire.

I am guessing something happens with the UrIII period, I will check in some books and get back to you about them.

I'm not understanding the purpose of this thread. How do events outside the Mayan world prove or disprove a Mayan prophecy that won't be complete for another five years or more?

I suppose when december 2012 comes around, things will go something like this:
Leaders of countrys with the most advanced technologies will be briefed with the following:
The discoveries of our Scientists have led to a new era of prsoperity for our people, Master!
At this point will ask one of two questions:
whats the big picture?
or
Great, let's play the 'game'- that folks, is the game of life.

and this new era will come just in time, I suppose one of the first techs researched will be hovering of sometime, that way, by 2015, all the fantastic predictions from Back to the Future II will come true. hovering and crappy holographic sharks, horrible tvs with conflicting characters, pepsi in bottles that look like tennis ball packages, games that don't require hands, and the allure to go and eat at a restaurant with that good old 80's atmosphere. who doesn't want to look at men dressed like women playing 'rock' as they eat?
not to mention bully's that seem to have also gone throwback.
or something like that. the mayans would be proud.
its the dawn of a new sun boys!

(save the clocktower!)

I have a somewhat OT question: did the maya predict their own demise ?

Not that is known. The OP is refering to the Long Count part of the Mayan calendar that had an ending date. Calendars usually don't end...

I'd heard to the effect that there were also earlier dates to that, like 2006, IIRC.

I've heard both the ancient Mayans AND ancient Egyptians predict the end in Dec 2012, but Civ I,II,III, and IV all go to 2050. So we have at least another 43 years... (sorry :) but you knew 'someone' would mention this eventually)

The more I read this it's interesting that many societies kept 360 and 365 day calendars, based on different cycles. The 365 one being for true seasons (for agriculture). http://www.levity.com/eschaton/Why2012.html

It seems it's mainly to mark conjunctions of astronomical elements that played as characters in their creation myths.

Can anyone tell why 2012?
