History Rewritten (Original Thread)

Several problems:

Elizabeth, you are not a prince. You are a queen.

Elizabeth, I am your BFF yet you won't give me your map of Great Britain.

Leonidas... You are just weird.

Guy with weird name: You're a great guy to talk to. Very intelligent conversations.

This is exactly the sort of stuff I'll be focusing on for 0.5, fixing all the little things like this. Thanks for these reports, keep em coming!

And other than that, there is a small issue with the massive new Earth Map. Budapest is food-poor until Biology (+1 from farms). Also, the Hungarian starting tile is just 1 tile NE of a perfect spot - far more resources and less mountains. The spot they spawn on right now has too many mountains.

I didn't make the map myself so not all starting points will be balanced. However in the case of Hungary that sounds like I messed up the coordinates, I'll have a look and shift them as you suggested.

Also, I noticed the bio for Attila is very short and doesn't have much information.

A lot of the civilopedia text is missing or inadequate up until now. I plan to remedy much of it in 0.5 :)

I don't have time to fully test it tonight but the Windows version throws tons of xml errors. One is easily fixable (gremlin) but the others seem related to changes made to religions? error after error talking about the "Info class incorrect" for every religion in Civ4BuildingsInfos.xml... Dunno if you see anything that would be causing errors?

I'm gonna test it more later and get back to you. Otherwise .4 runs great on the mac side so far! (no multiplayer testing till friday at the earliest though)

Well, I could work on Attila's bio.

Feel free!

Those errors will be because modular loading is switched off. Check both History Rewritten.ini and Civilization IV.ini. Also check that the folder hasn't been renamed, it should be "History Rewritten", with no version number. I've noticed some unarchivers are renaming the folder to match the .zip which is rather irritating.

I'll add a section to troubleshooting to clarify this.

Don't be irritated! I did that to specify your mod folder, when I read in your changelog you added a new chariot as the celt's UU, to make sure I would be copying that unit art into another ancient mod from your "newest" version. However, iirc your download file autoexpands, even though I set all my unarchive programs to not to.

If only it were that simple... that's not what's happening here, the directories are correct, there are no duplicate .ini files and the .ini file has modular loading on.

Aside from a gremlin in Agamemnon's Gametext file (an -> character in his pedia entry), this seems to be the only error but it's a doozy. The Civ4ReligionInfo.xml fails to load, no reason given just fails to load, also says LoadXML call failed. I don't see anything wrong with the file that I can tell but i'm no modder. Of course after that fails, everything referring to it fails too (info class incorrect) so a bajillion error screens appear. Do you see anything that might make windows freak out?

Oh, and the Hungarian Unique Building, the Turul statue, is a bit overkill. Maybe if it just gave March to all cavalry in the city, it would work better. (Attila was a very mobile King, and the other two leaders have no synergy with the Turul statue anyways.

Found one thing that could be the problem. The header of Civ4ReligionInfo.xml looks like this:

Code:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<Civ4ReligionInfo xmlns="x-schema:[COLOR="Red"]Religions_[/COLOR]CIV4GameInfoSchema.xml">
	<ReligionInfos>

Change it to this:

Code:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<Civ4ReligionInfo xmlns="x-schema:CIV4GameInfoSchema.xml">
	<ReligionInfos>

I demodularized that particular file and I forgot to change the schema reference; Religions_CIV4GameInfoSchema.xml no longer exists. Hopefully that fixes it, if not let me know and I'll keep searching :)

March is actually a very powerful promotion and because there is no way to limit free promotions to individual cities that would make the Turul even stronger. What I think I will do is reduce the EXP bonus to +2 and shift the tech requirement from Bronze Working to Metal Casting. That way there'll still be some synergy, just not as strong or as soon. The Turul is based on the Totem Pole which has a similar effect, but for archery units.

Yep that did the trick :) I'll edit this post later on to post a non-gremlin version of the agamemnon file, and hopefully I can test it a little in multiplayer on friday

Mod is running nicely, no crash so far...

Playing Hiram on an Earth map is a real pleasure, it would be nice if we could have some sort of enhanced AI, since Phoenicia with Amurru, Hatti, Israel, eventually Assyria (not tested again, but would appears with all these civs at once ? )...

Turkic place is very nice, but feel free to create a special map, especially if calling strategy, why not a sort of Ban Tasi making of map ?

If Ban Tasi was appealing, why not some sort of maps like this ?

Do you remember, Civfanatics, of Imperialism Map for Civ 3 ?
Why not redoing that ? In more complex manner ?

Happy play i had with 0.4, but the biggest Earth is a few too big for my poor Mac ;)
How to improve it ? With more of overall or a particular part of material ?
If i add 4 Go of Ram, what will doing ?

Sweet. I think I found the bad symbols in Agamemnon's text, I'll put up a windows patch shortly just in case anyone else is trying to run it on Windows too.

Mapmaking is not something I have the skill/knowledge to do and I'd rather spend my time and effort on the whole mod rather than just one map/scenario.

A map that big with 18 civs is going to be brutal even on the fastest of Macs. Very little we can do about it, BTS is not designed to use more than 1 processor core so it's only using a fraction of the potential of modern Macs. Increasing RAM to 4GB might help a bit, though I imagine graphic card memory/speed is a bigger limiting factor. Don't expect miracles though, even though we only got it last year, BTS is almost 3 years old now.

Why the Phoenician Bireme cant carrying normal units ?

It say "carry only special units", how i get a Carthaginian Empire, if Ugarit is surrounded by other Civs ?

Historically speaking, Phoenician Bireme carryed settlers units and merchants...

Why not creating a new type of unit : Commerce Unit ?

Great idea, isn't it ?

:goodjob:

----------

Edit First : I discovered a little problem not going to crash : when Pesedjet spreads into my empire, the pop-up window which announce me that Pesedjet enters in my borders has the Pesedjet icon not showed, it has a blue space instead of the required icon...

----------

Edit Two : Discovered the problem :)

It was a total mess with religions' icons...

Only graphic effect...

I set it so it couldn't carry military units, I didn't realize this excluded settlers and workers too. I'll just remove that restriction altogether. I'll keep the movement at 3, still able to enter rival territory and unable to attack or pillage. I'll reduce the cargo space back to 2 though to compensate.

Ugh I know what's causing that. You might see a similar problem with resource icons on some dialogs/tooltips/screens. I'll fix it.

Thanks heaps for these bug reports!

Some Ok... so some japanese guy is in charge of Civilized Jewelers, and changed the logo?

I found these mistakes with all corp/religious buildings, as well as units requiring a religion (missionaries)

And for the berbers, two things:

A UB: Souq (Marketplace) (More gold, or maybe, since the berbers were fairly aggressive, +1 Xp and some other benefit?)

And a leader: Yusuf (Yusuf ibn Tashfin) (Agg/Tac)

Those errors are related to the one Lachlan reported. Basically there are a couple files that have all the icons for religions, corporations, resources, etc. They are notoriously easy to mess up and I broke one of them when I reordered the religions for 0.4. I've attached the fix if any of you want to add it in yourself. It goes in History Rewritten/Assets/Res/Fonts/. Just overwrite the existing file.

The Souq is a very good idea. I was thinking either that or the Foggara. It will all depend on what I can find graphics for.

Yusuf ibn Tashfin is a good choice for a leader, I considered him but went with Yaqob al-Mansur instead. Could have gone either way. Atm there is no more art that I could use for a third Berber leader but if some more is made in the future I'll see. (Well, there is one leaderhead I haven't used but it has animation issues)
