History Rewritten (Original Thread)

So it's supposed to be faster loading now huh? That will be great! 0.4 was great, but took so long to load I couldn't stand waiting.

Thanks, I have a busy weekend but I'll take a look at it after that.

On Windows can I delete the "_MACOSX" file?

Yes.

Myatt Earth just got its "any civs" version ;)

If anybody could create a set of civs for HR 0.5...

What about an ancient themed map ?

If they go into Starting Points then I can add them. I just don't have the time to include maps otherwise, they create a lot of work for me.

Yep, loading time is now a fraction of what it used to be :)

twice the game on loading the big earth map it stalled and the mouse became the Windows mouse icon (on windows) I selected Taizong and Chandragupta as leaders

on successful load it seems that the map is the RFC map only without the later resources

on the first game I got working when on the first turn and reloading the save it gave me a memory allocation failure

EDIT: Galleass has redundant requirements, it requires sailing, and optics requires sailing tooz

I included that map on request, I know very little about it. It is excessively big so it's bound to cause memory issues on all but the most powerful of systems. You'll need to play a smaller size map.

Oops, will fix.

actually now that I got it to work it runs pretty fast, I normally play RFC so I'm actually used to slower speeds, what is horrific is that my machine is a Pentium 4, and with you saying it needs a powerful machine it means something is fundamentally wrong with Mac version

Good deal. I copied placed it into the private maps folder in the MOD and it works there. The problem is with it just in the Private Maps folder for BTS.

turn 920 took 9 seconds to process on the big Earth map, how about you people?

Yeah, it starts up pretty fast, but one annoying thing is the shutdown time. it takes about 5 minutes to quit out of.

Activity Monitor FTW! instantly kills programs

Big Earth+Aztec Topiltzin gives Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library: Runtime Error!

Hm. Strange, I have a MacBook with PLENTY of free space. Does everything else pretty fast.

I'm a bit confused if you are running HR on a Mac, Windows, or Windows emulation. Mac BTS is definitely slower than the Windows version, mostly due to using OpenGL rather than DirectX. However Mac BTS has much better memory management than the Windows version. As I understand it the Windows version throws a Memory Allocation Failure whenever the game tries to use more than 2GB of memory - regardless of how much memory the computer has. A larger map means more leaders, more cities and more units and thus it will hit that 2GB limit much sooner than a smaller map.

Quality of graphics card can also have a very big effect on game speed, much more so than CPU. Additionally, no version of BTS supports multiple core CPUs. Unfortunately this all means that a more recent computer won't always run BTS better, because of the way it's coded.

There's something odd about the way Mac BTS handles the PrivateMaps folders with mods. That's why the mod has to be installed in in the BTS mods folder rather than the Documents mod folder. The included maps just won't work otherwise. I'll add this to the F.A.Q.

I think that's a quirk of Mac BTS and certain systems. I get it sometimes and not other times, with or without mods. It's not just HR. No idea what causes it. I just force quit when it does it.

Big Earth+Aztec Topiltzin gives Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library: Runtime Error!

When does this error appear? When the mod is loading, when the map is generating, or during a game sometime? Does it cause the game to exit or does it keep running? Are you playing as Topiltzin or is he an opponent? Topilitzin is one of 2 leaders that still has missing diplomacy text so it's possibly related to that.

I've been getting a lot of requests and questions about the maps included with History Rewritten. This thread is getting way too long for anyone to read the entire thing to see if they're already been answered so I've added a few entries to the F.A.Q:

- Are mapscripts supported?

Yes, but you may need to place the mapscript you wish to add into /History Rewritten/PrivateMaps/ for it to work properly. I'm not sure why this is necessary but on the Mac at least it seems to affect many mods, not just History Rewritten.

- A particular map isn't accurate in some way, can you fix it?

All of the maps included with History Rewritten come from Starting Points by The J. Neither he nor I are the authors of these maps. Mapmaking is not a skill or interest of mine and I find it very time-consuming (time I'd rather spend on developing the rest of the mod) so all the maps are included "as is". This means I won't be changing terrain or resources unless the original author does.

What I can and will do though is shift starting locations for each civilization if you think they could be better, just let me know. For example: Earth(124x68) - shift Nubia 2 tiles west and 1 tile south.

- Can you add a particular map or scenario?

If a map is added to Starting Points I will include it. You'll need to request it there first as I rely on that mod component to enable the free civilization/leader choice feature. I do not have the time to devote to making scenarios, I'd rather focus on improving the entire mod.

Next version I recommend using 7zip as compression, in two minutes it compressed the mod to 356.5mb on fastest which is smaller than zip (413.5mb), if you don't like Terminal than use Keka (open Keka, choose compression then drag file onto Keka in dock) also it's multithread so it works fast

EDIT: just set to maximum compression and it squeezed it down to 254.3mb!

I would still prefer 7zip or rar because they are more known ;)

After all, we cant' deal with the Time, because what we have done, same thing, Time is always lost in any ways ;)

Hi,

I'm in mid game and I crash to desktop every few turns. Was running fine with the previous version.

it is 7zip, Keka is a Mac Version with a GUI

If you can post a crash report log or three, Xyth (or I) might be able to work out which area of the mod is causing he problem. Also, some info about which civ you are playing and when the crash occurs - while you are playing your turn, or during the inter-turn time when the AI is playing.

Hi,

I'm playing Russia on a Huge fractal map. I crash to desktop every 10 turns or so and I don't receive any report like "Memory Bad Allocation". Crash first occurs in Medieval Era, during the inter-turn time when the AI is playing.

The crash reports can be found if you launch /Applications/Utilities/Console.app. Click Show Log List in the toolbar if the list on the left hand side is not visible. scroll down the list in the left column and highlight FILES->~/Library/Logs->CrashReporter->Civilization IV_[date of latest crash]. That should display a lot of text. If you copy and paste the first 20 or 30 lines from this report it may help to show where the software is keeling over.

If you are on a Huge map, it may be worth saying what sort of Mac you are running on, what version of OS X, and how much RAM you have.

Do you have the 3.19 patch installed?
