History Rewritten (Original Thread)

Aristocracy is slightly overpowered, I would drop the spy bonus to 1. Other than that it looks very very good. :) now how will it hold up in game?

I'll do that to Aristocracy. Thanks heaps for the feedback :)

Do have any idea what tech. will unlock them?

I've not put a great deal of thought into that yet since I'm changing the tech tree after 0.8 anyway. Next job is to get icons for them all and get some basic descriptions written.

Hopefully I'll have 0.8 finished some time next week.

Trying your interesting mod.

Unfortunately, after playing for a few hours, every few turns I get:

Memory Allocation Failure
exiting program.
Reason Std: bad_alloc

Any idea why?

I have never gotten this error on my Mac before.

4GB of memory.
OS 10.6.3.

This is due to a design flaw in Civ4 itself, it happens on both the Mac and Windows version. Basically Civ4, being 32bit, can only use a maximum of 2GB of memory, and while this is true of other 32bit software, Civ4 seems to be particularly bad at memory management, often failing to free up unused resources. All large mods like History Rewritten will eventually cause Memory Allocation Failures (MAFs). I do all I can to optimize the mod but they're inevitable.

When you get one you need to quit BTS completely and relaunch, and that should clear things up for a while. If they're still occurring soon after a relaunch the best solution is to play with smaller map and/or fewer civs. How many civs were you playing with by the way?

Some people have reported that unpacking the FPK files (the files that contain all the art) helps reduce MAFs. If you're willing to give that a go you can find details on how to that in this post. Doing so will drastically increase the time it takes the mod to first load however.

EDIT: Unrelated, but you should update to 10.6.5. It contained several graphics driver improvements, some of which improve the performance of Civ4 for some cards.

I will give this a try and see if it helps, thanks.

I play on the biggest sized maps, and had about a dozen civilizations
However, with vassaling I think I was up to 16 civs.
(I usually don't play with vassals, but I noticed one of your new abilities gave plus with vassals.)

Thanks,

P.S. Never had this problem with regular Civ BTS Windows on my Windows laptop.

I did both of things you suggested.
Played for a few hours and the problem seems gone.
Thanks!

Glad it helped! Let me know if you have any further trouble or feedback.

0.8 update:

I have relatives staying with me so I'm getting very little achieved this week. Civics are all done except for their pedia text; I still need to tidy up all the loose ends of the new civs and other bits and pieces, plus an optimization pass or two.

I've been distracted by family visits and the Civ5 launch (still not liking it). I'll be back on task this week and will try to have 0.8 done by the weekend.

Hey Xyth, I just downloaded History Re-Written Mod... I hadn't played civbts for awhile.. my old mod of urs (bat mod i think?) was way out of date. Thanks for all your hard work!

Is there a big chart or something I can download that shows all the civ leader's traits and unique units for your mod?

Xyth, you're awesome. I just wanted to say. This mod is the civ V i actually wanted! Keep up the great work.

Thanks, glad you're enjoying it!

There isn't at the moment. However I do have a Pages document that I use to keep track of the leaders' trait combos; it wouldn't be too much effort to tidy that up and upload it as a PDF if you're interested. I don't have anything in a convenient format for UU/UB/UW though.

Hi Xyth, thanks for the response. Yes, if it's not too much trouble, I'd definitely like a pdf to see things more easily. With so many civs and leaders, it's cumbersome on my little screen to review each civ and leader.

By the way, I've been playing a game several hours now, and I absolutely love - great job!

0.8 is done and ready for your downloading pleasure!

Its not quite as polished as I would have liked but it's summer here and the holiday season is fast approaching and thus I have very little modding time available to me until the new year. A lot of you are very keen to try out the new civics so I thought it better to get it out now rather than make you wait unnecessarily.

@iamliberal: Now that 0.8 is out I'll see if I can get that pdf ready for you this weekend

@Thyran: I just realized I never changed the Pyramids as you suggested. Sorry about this and I promise to do it in the next version

@everyone: I'd love feedback on how the civics are working out, both your opinion and how the AI in your games is using (or not using) them. Also let me know if you think a leader should have a different favourite civic.

I'm going in! But megaupload is barely loading right now. Will report back in later.

Just met him, and he was kinda quiet.

Yeah there are 4 leaders I haven't written diplomacy text for yet and he's one of them. The others are Dharmasetu, Le Loi and Topiltzin.
