History Rewritten (Original Thread)

I'm going to sound like a bit of an idiot, but is there anyway to set HRW to launch on startup of Civ4? Going through the main game every time is a pain

Open the ini, in Documents/Civilization 4 Beyond the Sword/CivilizationIV.ini

Find a line that says Mod Path or something like that. There are instructions beside it. So put History Rewritten instead of 0/None.

Thanks :)

I was wondering on a idea of mine. . .advanced espionage options.

-Entice War (a instant war between targeted nation and a random neighbor which is not you)
-Kidnap (transfers a great person to capital city)
-Start Rebellion (X amount of barbarian units spawn in enemies cultural borders)
-Assassination (Removes a garrisoned unit in a city)
-Bribe (transfers a unit over to your team)

Too bad so sad :3

in all seriousness, mabye on a random player that isn't your vassal or colony.

Or one that empire one had a highly negative view of, say annoyed or furious only.

--Have a mission to "frame" another nation, causing -1's between two opposite nations or maybe random events? Im not sure if the AI would be able to use it effectively though

Kidnapping of great specialist is an awesome idea! However, I suspect changes like these would require the SDK, or Python scripting far beyond my ability unfortunately. The spy missions code is not something I've ever taken the time to look at before though. I'll take a look after 0.8 is done.

Your Civ4 and its expansions should be installed in ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/

Long ago, Steam used to put the Steam folder in your ~/Documents folder, but they moved it because people didn't like all that data being backed up with their other documents.

Do I have to reinstall Steam if the Steam files are not in Library/Application.... ? Even in my Documents folder I just have a BTS folder, but no folder which is named "Steam". If I search for "Steam" using spotlight I just find Steam folders on my bootcamp partition. I put the Mac Buffy mod in the BTS folder in my documents folder and this works, but for History Rewritten I just get the same error as Dylz : "GFC Error: failed to initialize the primary control theme". I installed Steam just a week ago.

Use spotlight to find where your "Civilization IV Beyond the Sword" application is, then there should be a folder in the same location called 'Mods'. Put History Rewritten inside that folder.

Thank you for your quick reply. I will check that when I am home in the evening.

If your Steam folder is in the Library, I don't think Spotlight indexes it, so you will not find the BtS application using Spotlight. Are you sure you are looking in the right Library folder? It should be in ~/Library/Application Support/ - that's the Library inside your Home folder, not the one at the top level of the system hard drive.

I'm also surprised that MacBUFFY works in your ~/Documents/BtS/Mods/ folder. It will run a random game, but it should fail if you try to load a BOTM start file, as the in-game fixed asset check doesn't like it.

I haven't tried a BOTM start file, so I cannot comment on that. It could well be that I did not search in the Home department for the BTS folder.

Ok, I now put the mods in the folders you mentioned, but now I cannot even load the MacBuffy mod. It loads only if I put it in my BTS folder within the documents folder.

Where *exactly* did you put MacBUFFY? If it's in the right place, you should be able to run the Mac AssetsChecker that's linked in my signature without errors. If that works then you should be able to load a BOTM start file. And you should be able to put History Rewritten in the same place as MacBUFFY.

Small update: There will be 2 new civs in 0.8, the Tamil and the Indonesians.

This will bring the total number of civs to 49 and the total number of leaders to 134 (leaving just 2 unused trait combos). This leaves room for just one more civ and its 2 leaders. At this stage I'm thinking a second South American civ of some sort (Amazonian/Tupi/Brazil) is long overdue and deserves to be civilization #50 (probably in 0.9). I *might* squeeze in a few more civs at a later date but to do so I would be removing some leaders from the existing civs - I don't wish to add another trait and adding any further leader art would just be too hard on memory management. Gotta stop somewhere :)

First of all thank you Xyth for providing us this incredible mod for mac. I really enjoy it despite its a bit too heavy for my computer (serious lagging start before middle ages).

The real reason why I'm posting here is The Pyramids. Seeing how much work there has been done to the game in terms of gameplay (different stats and units), graphics and history index I personally find it surprising that the original reward for building Pyramids is still there.

Allowing all government civics isn't just logical at all. The AI always uses it to choose representation since it is tactically the best governing civic in the early game. I do understand that there were the Tribunal of Carthage, "democracy" of Athens, Roman government and many other systems representating the representation of the people in ancient times. However even the "democracy" of Athens can be ruled under the civic "despotism" if you come to think about it.

My suggestion is to allow Hereditary rule, Slavery and perhaps even Organized religion as free civics and give +25% to great person development as long as all these two or three civics remain chosen as your civics.

Since you are re-shaping the civic options at the moment I thought this would be the right time to raise my opinion about this issue.

Best regards: Thyran

My vote is for Amazonian. Hmm.. Question. How long until you have History Rewritten developed to a point where i can start building scenarios and maps?

Edit: @ Thyran I hate you for mentioning that, the 'Mids are my favorite wonder, but you're right. They should give a GP bonus and a bonus to your priest specialists perhaps?

Pyramids:

I agree that the Pyramids are in serious need of a change. Since I'm changing the civics atm it makes sense to change them at the same time. Added to my todo list :)

Scenario:

What sort of scenario do you have in mind? Feel free to get started whenever you're ready, I'm happy to help you out if a change I make breaks or alters something. At the moment my roadmap for the mod looks roughly like this (biggest changes only):

0.8: Tamil, Indonesians, new Civics, Olympic Games
0.9: South American civ, early tech tree overhaul, change the way religions are founded, new resources(?)
1.0: Late tech tree overhaul, new resources(?), finish all pedia text and citylists

That's bound to change as time progresses though but if we keep each other posted on our plans I'm sure we can keep things compatible.
