HOF Questions and Answers Thread

Yeah, I figured the HOF site was different from CFC. I don't like having the browser's remember id/pwd settings on for security reasons.

How is your HOF password being remembered by your browser? I got a Chromium browser (called SRWare Iron) that doesn't remember either CFC or HOF passwords. I also have Firefox set up to remember both, but protected by a Master Password. They both remember the user id, but that's probably stored in a cookie that can be easily removed or prevented via a Cookie Manager Plug-in for Firefox. I wouldn't worry about a browser remembering an id, except something like a Swiss Bank Account Number.

Both of these options is far more secure than a Web server storing your Password in a Cookie. I always reject that option.

Firefox has a Master Password that protects all your passwords. The passwords are associated with specific sites so there is very little risk of disclosure. However, you must enable the Master Password by setting it, otherwise none of your other passwords are protected. There is also a Firefox plug-in that will time-out your Master Password in X minutes, in case you need to do something suddenly; for the truly paranoid, like myself. ;)

Does BUFFY store autosaves anywhere? I started a nice SS game as Elizabeth, got part way through and took a break... and opened up a 4000 BC save, which autosaved over the Liz autosave :( I have a 2140 BC save or something like that, but not the 4000 BC one.

Any chance there's a copy somewhere?

Yes, BUFFY can save starting save in the SINGLE directory (not Auto), but IIRC you should check appropriate option. Also BUFFY can do save when you exit to the main menu.

As Dynamic says. But only if you turned it on beforehand.

The quote below is from a different thread. I am quoting in this thread since it is the appropriate thread.
Since it is a different map after the ALT-G there is no problem.

Don't forget to save the new map before you start playing so you have a 4000BC save for your submission. ;)
If I start game and feel my game is not good and abandon it, can I reload the 4000 BC save and then regenerate/ALT-g a new map? (This eliminates the tedious steps of choosing opponents again.)

Yes, you can use any save with all the desired settings (including selected AIs) to seed either an ALT-G regeneration or CTRL-ALT-G MapFinder session.

I would not use a save file that was or would be part of any HoF submission for a "seed" save file though. Although this may not be strictly required, it is easy enough to do, so why not do it. A save from an abandoned Game would be perfect.

Alot of people do that. It doesn't matter how you get there. As long as it is a new map you should be fine. (That would include a using a 4000bc file from a submitted game for you alt-g. A new map is a new map. ;) )

Just reinstalled BtS after getting Windows 7 a while ago. Installed everything, patches, HOF mods, etc.. and I get this message when I try to load Buffy 3.19.003:

Running Win 7 Ultimate, installed Civ 4, then 1.74 patch, then BtS, then Buffy 3.19.003, then BtS patch 3.19.

Why does it say that?

Try following the steps outlined in the Vista\Win7 Fixes page.

I just installed Win7 and got the message too.
The message appears, because you dont use admin rights if you just start the game normally.
Make a right-click on your shortcut, then select "Run as administrator".

I still haven't found a way how I could load my savegames directly (double-clicking on the file).

Python error when using HOF in vanilla (GOTM59) on WinXP:

I got this message: see attached screenshot.
When I click on ok, it doesn't go away.
The only way to get rid of it, is to use Task Manager and kill Civ4.
When I reload my last save (also attached), I select a worker to be build in Athens (it just finished a settler), then double-click on Athens to enter the city screen and the message appears again.
I've also attached my ini file.

Hope you guys can help.
Please advise if you need more info.

I think that specialist stacker is broken. Try turning that off.

I've just noticed while running MapFinder:

A warning is displayed with the initial Map generation that its not valid for HOF play and to look at F8 Settings for details.

The following error message appears in the F8 Settings Tab:

The assets are different from a standard install. Contact the HOF staff.

It occurred some time after installing a Standard Civ V Game on the same Vista machine via Steam. I hope Steam hasn't done something nasty with my Civ IV assets.

What should I do to diagnose and fix this issue?

EDIT: I just ran "Asset Checker" v2.2.2 and attached the generated cvs file in a zip archive.

EDIT: Any suggestions on what to do? It complains about a lot of things in Vanilla, but nothing in Warlords or BtS. BtS is mainly what I'm concerned about.

EDIT: It seems that it is complaining about HOF-1.74.003 being installed instead of HOF-1.74.004. I'm confused. Why should BUFFY care what Vanilla Mods are installed?

EDIT2: Now its beginning to make some sense. I don't have HOF-1.74.004 installed. (I don't play Vanilla Games.) I'll try installing HOF-1.74.004.

EDIT3: I installed HOF-1.74.004 and now Asset Checker v2.2.2 detects no errors. Why is BUFFY-3.19.003 still complaining about Assets not matching a standard install?

I have submitted a Gauntlet Game which happens to beat the high score on the HOF table, will this count on the HOF table or not?

Yes, all submissions to a HOF Gauntlet are also included in any HOF slot they qualify for.
