Homophobia in Russia

Seconded. (Or should I say "thirded"?) Most of time, the excuse of cultural singularity sucks. No nation is sooo different unless they're a nation of E.T. To me, common sense is universal.

Do you trust the russian newspapers more then?

People might know about your country even if they don't live there themselves.
But you seem to think you know about other countries so much you can tell that nobody in other countries know about your country.
Which is kinda sad really.

Some of us do know, and what we see aren't necessarily nice things.
But it isn't our job to start to bash or judge Russia but we all have our opinions, which we are allowed to offer.
That is called free speech and democracy, you know.
No, I don't trust russian ones.
Your opinions are based on your mass media

This was an incident from my personal life which I recounted to Rik because he asked. You have absolutely no basis for suggesting whether Lenin's Tomb was significant or not, because you weren't there.

Similarly, tell me where I suggested "all russians are comunists". I didn't, because I don't believe that, and it's also completely irrelevant to what I was posting.

Your level of willful self-delusion in this thread is staggering, but I'll leave it to others to point out why you might not, for example, be aware of gays in the Russian police. For my part, if you're going to comment on my personal experiences, limit yourself to what you actually know about it, eh ?
Excuse me. But what was the reason for mentioning mausoleum then?

Yes, of course, why I haven't thought about that before?

I guess talking to people that visit Russia all the time (my mother came from there this morning), talking with people who have lived there, talking with people who are from Russia, reading about Russian history and politics, and visiting Russia haven't given me anything.

I see

As per the original post, it was outside Lenin's tomb that I was stopped by the police and had my passport confiscated. It wasn't open at the time (it was midnight), but as I hadn't had a chance to visit it during my trip (I was there to work), I just wanted to stand a while at it, and contemplate - for good or ill, only a handful of people had as much impact on the 20th century as did Lenin.

Because generally when you tell a story about something that happened you say where it happened.

The funny thing is that one of the protestors was a German MP (who happens to be gay). Apparently, he got beaten up by some homophobes and then got arrested by the Russian police.

Lol... And where from do you know about events and history? From british papers I guess?

No from a wide range of sources including books, newspapers, the internet, tv etc....

Not in Russia. Teachers - yes (my friend had one in his school), politicians - yes, singers - of course. But priests and cops - no. In Russia - no.

Really? How do you know this?

Is every single cop scanned with a gaydar or something? Or is this just something that the authorities tell you and you believe it?

What authorities? Man, I don't support current power and I don't ever trust politicians.
In Russia, militia is a man's job. But maybe some gays are there. BTW, in Russia there aren't much gays. I've never seen one live (anyway, I've never seen a man who told himself that he's a gay)

Edit: post 500

That's just wishful thinking on your part. The reason most homosexuals in Russia don't come out of the closet is because they'd be discriminated against.. and who wants that?

Do you live in Russia? Do you know anything about Russia? Gays are not discriminated in Russia more than they are discriminated in the United States. Give me a break. This isn't Saudi Arabia, though I bet you'd like to think it is.

BTW: One of Russia's most popular bands is a lesbian duo. How can this be in a nation where "gays get murdered on the street"?

Well it certainally is a nation where non-Russians get murdered on the street', Russia has a significant problem with neo-Nazi's and racial attacks.

AndyTerry is the one claiming that there aren't many homosexuals in Russia. You'd obviously expect the same %age of homosexuals, on average, in each country around the world. So the fact that the homosexuals in Russia aren't coming out of the closet as frequently as in the west seems to indicate to me that they're afraid of doing so.

Gays are not discriminated in Russia more than they are discriminated in the United States.

In America, gay pride parades and marches are legal occurances, and happen every so often.

In Russia, they are declared illegal and police beat up protestors.

I think there is somewhat of a difference, but what do I know, "I don't understand Russia" right? ;)
