how do you becoma a mod?

I wouldn't know, but from what the mods let slip out, it's not that fun. Especially for Padma ;) and having to restock the refrigerator.

Do any of the exmods that still freqent the staff forum take beer from the staff fridge? ;)

I was a mod for my gaming clan site a while back. It is not as glamorous as it is portrayed to be. You get tons of flames at you and you spend half the time posting and the other half moderating. However, there are upsides and I wouldn't mind a moderating job if someone asked me.

I thought that ex-mods can't go to the staff forum. BTW, what's with the staff fridge? I know that there isn't literally a refrigerator for the mods, but is it completely made up (in other words, it's only mentioned in situations/threads like this), or is there a thread in the staff forum about the fridge (and it's sort of like a role-playing thing), or what? Or am I not allowed to know? (;))

And I would greatly enjoy being a "secondary mod" (a user that has moderator abilities for a forum, but doesn't have the responsibility of reading for trouble; he/she can just moderate when he/she sees something in a thread he/she is reading on his/her own), and I think some forum-sites have those, but I don't really think I would want the responsibility of being a "full-time mod."

Ahhhh, so you want the power to delete posts of people who disagree with you in a thread, but you don't want to have to look at all posts to do a good job when it comes to modding :D.

I think i may have made the list if WillJ becomes a mod lol.

Padma told me that some exmods frequent the forum :mischief:

Yep, exactly! :D

IIRC, it was a CT site, or at least for one of FPS games...

On the topic at hand, fascinating revelations... :p

"Frequent" is the wrong term. ;) It's more like they are still allowed to stop in for a beer once in a while. And it isn't forever. If they aren't paying the dues, why should they get free beer?

Mods are usually not liked because they mod much more than they post.
I'm talking about moderators generally speaking not here in particular.

When I think of some of the flames I've received from some people in the last month ...

Hmm, I've been flaming a mod once in a terrible way and was very sorry for it a split second later. Anyway, the harm was done.

But this happened after an incident in OT, which seems to be a fertile forum for flaming and trolling. At the moment I did not know the OT is modded in another way than other forums, for a reason.

What surprises me: Why are you (Padma, moderator of the not-so-flame-and-troll-fertile-forums) flamed? You have a reputation as a nice and helpful poster and your modding, afaik, is mostly about moving threads to the right forum.

Or are all kinds of flames and trolls modded away before I notice?

Flaming a moderator is a dumb thing to do most of the time. It makes you look dumb, in retrospect you'll see that for yourself.
If you want to read all trolling and flaming, you just have to browse the boards all the time.
Then, you'll see that there are some things posted that just shouldn't be. So, thumbs up for the moderating business.
The easiest way to become moderator is probably to set up your own forum.
BTW, I disagree wit d'artagnan's statement that mods are disliked because they post less. In a recent moderating discussion, the argument was made that mods shouldn't participate, or participate less, in the threads they moderate.

P.S.

"MY WORDS ARE BACKED WITH (IMAGINARY) WMD"

See, the wormlike virus I contaminated the CFC server with is already mutating people's signatures into my own!

True, we don't see as much trolling and flaming as OT, but it does happen, and we try to stamp it out quickly before it gets out of hand.

The most recent flames I got were via PM from a DL after I banned him. It seems children will behave like children no matter which forum they are posting in. :sigh:

@strider

no, no, dont get me wrong. i dont want to became a mod, really...yet
I was just wondering how things work, you know, after seen the academy awards I thought TF, AoA, Lefty and the rest of the mods chose 5 possible mods and then said:

Something like that. ;)

I will never accept a moderator post ( no pun intented ), even though I know I won't get any proposals :p

Why ? Like always, people who have power tend to abuse it and feel somewhat that they are superior to normal people.
It happens everywhere : from the highest political ranks, to a common cop.
Power rottens yourself, whether you like or not.

Hold a gun in the street and you'll see the power it gives makes you feel superior to the passer-by.

Ha, sorry for this philosophical thread-jack but at least I said it ! ;)

PS : This is NOT an offense to CFC moderators. It's just my personal opinion on power generally speaking ;)

Cool.... I wonder if anyone has ever nominated me for a modship.... I know I was nominated for a #civfanatics chat op thing before (actually against CT) :)
