There is a huge difference between cunning and evil. And although I like to consider myself a morally upright person (or at least someone who tries to be) I am a fan of Machiavelli, who I feel is misunderstood. He didn't believe in manipulation for its own sake but because it had a higher goal, the security of one's nation. And if more premodern, nonliberal rulers had followed him, they would have been better rulers. After all, he advises against cruelty for its own sake, or for revenge, among other things.
