even though the steam thing annoys me and the DCL makes me wonder how good this will work out with mods, I'm really excited. I know that I just can't resist the urge to play yet another civ game. since 1991 I bought and played this game in all versions (civRev NOT included), even the infamous ctp and the rts clones. I bought the civ compelation just to get the card game. I'm sure civ5 will have some things that I won't like, but after all: it's civ! it's new! the thing which makes me most excited is the new cultural border system. personally I would be much more excited if they would make MoM2 but since that won't happen in this parallel universe "thanks" to EA, I'm happy enough that at least CIV will be continued.
concerning the steam thing: I don't like this. but on the other hand I have to admit, that in the computer market 2010 small developers (compared to EA) have to do something to get their programmers paid. If steam is the only way to get more "console type"-players to buy a good franchise, I can't complain to much about it. Even though it seems a bit sad, after being 20 years a loyal fan, now to have to use something like steam, just to continue, I do appreciate that I can continue at all. Firaxis is a good company, and if the steam thingy helps them to survive - independent - somehow I have to agree with this way, even if I don't like it.
regarding the changes compared to civ4: I really think, civ5 has LESS content, and I don't like less content in a turn based game. I like MORE content, as in Fall Further or in RoM. But then I also know, that most gamers nowadays just want to play something simple. and they are the ones who are the cash cows. furthermore, civ3 was LESS than civ2:ToT many times, but at the time civ4 came out, civ3 was a solid product, thanks to Conquests and many modders. I think the same will be true for civ5 in about 2 years from now on.
so yeah I am excited that civ5 comes out, excited about the future of it and also excited, that there IS a future for it.
