How is your EU3 Game going?

Yes it is not much to buy Chronicles. I will also get the expansion for Victoria II, after I learn how to play a bit. Did they make a patch for the vanilla version?

There are patches for the vanilla version of course, the latest is 1.4beta from January. Just to be clear, the game is perfectly playable without the expansion, but with it it is much, much better. This last sentence is probably true for all Paradox games.

I finally figured out the basics on how to play EU3, and I must say it's great fun.

One question: How do I get "good" Great Men? I have a cultural tradition of ~50%, but I can still only recruit one-star Great Men.

With ~50%, you should be getting 2-star and 3-star advisers, I think. You must have been really unlucky.

Assuming you've been recruiting Great Men who only need Cultural Tradition, you have been quite unlucky. I've even had 4 star advisors with slightly less than 50% tradition before, when I was somewhat lucky. 3-star is what I'd expect at that level. If you've been recruiting Great Men who need both Cultural and either Army or Navy, and those are near zero, then I'd still expect two star, but one star wouldn't surprise me too much - you really need strong tradition in both in those cases.

I usually try to invest magistrates such that my advisors are at least 4 star (and with a good shot at 5+). So, 85% or higher is usually the benchmark I shoot for - if I need one and that isn't attainable soon, I'll either hire someone off the market, or leave the slot empty. But that isn't always possible, and 50% should be worth more than 1 star.

I know blockading a port during a siege makes the siege end quicker, but what about the opposite? If you have a fleet stationed next to your own province under siege, will the siege last longer?

Playing nice game with Spain. I began with Aragon but of course I formed Spain. I'm rich colonial/trade power.

But there is couple questions. There have been formed two nations that I haven never seen before: Hannover and Livonian Order. And yes, i'm playing with DW, with latest patch (no mods). How do you form them, just curious?

You don't. AFAIK, they are successor states from a 1399 start, or any start before they exist.

If a country holds them, nationalist rebels may spawn, thus giving a new country's core. It can only happen in certain circumstances though. If you look at Samogitia, for example, both the Teutonic Order and Prussia already exist, and so does Lithuania. While Patriots probably should have spawned, it was nationalists instead. Thus, new country.

I could be way off, of course, but I think this is how it works.

I think you're right, Nintz. I haven't played DW, so I don't know exactly, but in IN I've had the nation of Fez spawn from nationalists in Morocco.

This. Fez is the most common successor state, usually formed after Spain/Castille messes around in Morocco.

Thing is, they don't have any cores till after rebels spawn, and take provinces.

Hannover usually forms out of Brunswick's corpse (and sometimes its neighbors) if there are no HRE wars at the time--otherwise, the Imperial armies will "accidentally" whack the rebels.

I've added a decision to form Hannover, though, just because I feel like it should be form-able.

Nope, only Riga itself has a core there. They can spawn there though.

I decided to take of the reigns of the hordes and terrorize Europe tonight, and it was going quite well. Poland-Lithuania was left in ruins after one war, and was easy pickings in the second. Hungary was easily dispatched, and the Ottomans were caught with their armies in Asia - and are now paying tribute from across the Dardanelles. So it was on to Austria and Bohemia. They fielded the largest armies I'd faced yet, but were also defeated once the Hordes combined against them.

So, the Holy Roman Emperor, with no hope of military victory, considered his options. And he came up with a great idea... a formal request for the return of Vienna!

Upon learning of this, there was but one possible reaction for the Khan:

It appears that Vaclav IV von Luxemburg had been reading up on Pope Leo and decided to take a page out of his book. If you can't defeat the barbarians, go talk to them!

Unfortunately, the alternatives are not very appealing. -1 stab per province will quickly result in -3 stability, which is bad for revolt risk. But, returning it will effectively halt progress. What a quandry!

The code supposedly is:

Code:
Emperor:
 Exists
 War = no
Hre
Not = { is core this
Is capital = no
Not = { has province flag emperor nagged for it
Not = { has province flag given to the emperor
Owner:
 Is emperor = no
 War = no

But the Emperor is at war, so shouldn't that stop them from requesting it?

Also, the owner (whether Austria or me) is at war, so shouldn't that prevent it? Or do I need to be at war with a horde? I suppose I could beat up Nogai for a hundred years or so if that'll prevent the Emperor from making requests.

And does the " Not = { has province flag given to the emperor " part mean that if I give it back, and then take it again, the Emperor won't ask again. I very much doubt it, but as a Horde, retaking it wouldn't be a big deal.

Yeah, "illegally held Imperial land" is a pile of bullcrap. I'm the Islamic Ottomans come to hear the lamentations of your women, you have no power here!

Best option I've found is to cheat magistrates and secede all Imperial land from the Empire.

That is best if you are large enough to pull it off, such as Ottomans or Burgundy. Sadly, a small HRE state can't afford to withdraw, or you will suffer the wrath of the emperor at every turn.

Frankly, I think that should be automatic--while Christians, especially those of the same faith as the Emperor, should have this event to consider handing back the land because of religious relations, the Pope, and all that, it shouldn't apply to Muslims or hordes invading Europe.

So, it turns out being at war with another Horde is sufficient for keeping format requests away. At first I went after the Oirat Horde, but I forgot about peace treaties auto-happening after 3 years of nothingness. So Nogai is my foe. The only tricky part is making sure I don't conquer any of their land, so that the war continues.

Well, what happens is that "horde" wars don't qualify for normal "Is at war = yes/no" modifiers. Otherwise, most E Europe countries would have issues. However, horde vs horde is a usual type of war, meaning that it checks off the "Is is war" modifier for events and the like. I wouldn't have thought of it, but it makes sense in hindsight.
