Anyway as promised, here's my USA game:

The World -
As you can see (or not since it's white) Austria is clearly the ugliest country in the world

The USA - (I conquered Haiti, and Panama before the Civil War and made them both slave states, for fun. So the CSA was all of the traditional states, + Arizona, and New Mexico, and Panama/Haiti. Was quite interesting. I recently just incorporated Cuba and Saint Maarten into my Empire after a war against Spain, Netherlands, and Belgium)

The Great 8 - Im doing kind of poor in terms of becoming #1 in this game. Prussia and Austria both industrialized quicker then me and I was 5th in terms of Industrial Development, I'm now third though.. I feel I could easily catch up to the NGF.. France.. I'm not so sure..

I'm playing Japan (AHD) and for some reason my POPs refuse to work (most of) the RGOs causing them to convert rapidly into Craftsmen. Unfortunately I can't expand my factories fast enough, I've got like 700k unemployed craftsmen with a adult male population of 7.43 million. Also is it bad to run a large national debt if you can pay it?It's around 700k and I could grab another 1.3 million from it. It seems like it would be a good money transfer to my 40k capitalists (running laissez faire).

Finally finished what turned out to be a major slog as Russia. I essentially went through three phases:

1840-1873: The French Wars. In 1840, the French attack my Dutch allies, and in response I declare war on France. It ends up going exceedingly well because between 1836 and 1840 I was focusing officers, so by 1840 my army was much larger and had better leadership than France's. I smashed them, which set the tone for the next 30 years as I then buddied-up with Prussia and France bashed their head against us two more times: once to reclaim French Provence, which I took in the War of 1840, and another time to reclaim Alsace-Lorraine, which the Germans took in the War of 1847. We disarmed France following that war, but by 1857, the French were back and out for blood. They smashed us, regained Alsace-Lorraine, and then came for Provence in 1867 - a war that lasted 7 long years and ended when we agreed to a status quo peace. Which was all the more necessary given that...

1873-1877: The Great War broke out in 1873 with the Swedish invasion of Northern Finland. Tired and long-mobilized from the fourth French war, it was a long, brutal brawl, and me and Prussia were alone against the allied powers consisting of Sweden, Austria, and Denmark. Fortunately, the United Kingdom intervened on our side, and that pretty much sealed our victory in the long run as they quickly knocked Denmark out of the war and harried Sweden relentlessly even as they pushed on Finland. All my efforts were focused on Austria, however, and ultimately we had victory. We got lots of war reparations money and I got West Galicia for my trouble. That's when Prussia devolved into a series of revolutions that eventually forced Poland from their hands, beginning...

1878-1929: The Age of Strife. While there were pockets of peace during this time, the United Kingdom attempted to contain us no less than four times during this period, while other powers - Austria-Hungary, the Ottomans, France, and Sweden - all rattled our sabers. Despite the almost-constant warfare, Russian industry boomed in this period, eventually coming to surpass Britain's by a hefty margin. Notable in this period is my systematic dismantling of Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, as well as fighting massive globe-spanning wars against the aggressive United Kingdom.

tl;dr: Everyone's a jerk.

My people voted in a Socialist government after they got tired of the laissez-faire and the interventionism, in that order, and it actually ended up creating a bubble economy that popped in the 20's when we had to scale back industrial subsidies to afford the 4th and last war with the UK (wherein we *finally* forced them to surrender and disarm). The economy recovered after the war, but seeing how quickly it all came tumbling down when the government took its hands off makes me wary. Truly, my beloved, democratic Russia is doomed.

I had a lot of unemployment at the end thanks to the bubble popping in the '20s, many many many thousands unemployed with the factories growing too slowly to re-employ them.

I want to play this so much, but I have screwed up my installation somehow, can't patch, can't even play base AHD.

Time for the good old re-install everything. Or I'll just stick with CK2 for a little while until they stop updating APD every week.

APD sucks now, it is WAY too slow. They need to speed it up, they even have a whole thread about this problem but the creator refuses to fix it for some reason.. So.. I've been playing AHD with the New Nations Mod..

That is not a good sign, given I'm playing on a 4-year old laptop. I struggle to play V2 and CK2 as-is.

My laptop is less then a year old, and it's pretty up to date (6 gb ram, great graphics card etc.)

Oh yeah, and there are a good number of bugs, too. I saw a war between Prussia and, um, Reactionary Rebels indicated in the Wars tab with the title "AGRESSION_."

So, yeah. There are quite a few outstanding technical problems with APD.

Yeah this happened to me too, several times. Which really sucks because I really liked PDM..

This is the biggest selling point for me, besides the Great Wars (which are being incorporated into the base game anyway). The existence of stocks and clerks-only industry was genius, including depressions... I'm not sold on the early v. late arms factories, but I'll live with it for all the other good stuff that comes along with the pack.

Kicked off another game as Prussia, did Day 1 War of Hegemony against Austria where I demanded Bohemia. Got lucky when nobody came to their rescue, occupied them until they were a secondary power, then demanded Add to Sphere. Next came a decade of politics where I fought to keep them in my sphere while adding Holstein, Saxony, and the South German states. When I formed the NGF, I DoW'd on the Papal States to get a war between just me and France. I smashed them in the opening months of the war, so even though there was a stalemate towards the end, I had enough war points + their war tiredness to get Alsace-Lorraine (forsaking my red herring wargoal against the Papal States). One Three Hurrahs later and:
