Civ I on the Atari ST. Great machine, I still have it in the cellar somewhere because I can't stand the tought of throwing it away. I skipped Civ III. Yes, I am old -- ask me about PacMan :).

I started on Civ I on the Amiga and pretty much played them all except for Revolutions.

I still remember the railroad on water tile and refresh work on tile improvement exploits on Civ I.

However, I never really took to Civ III and so that one got resigned to the shelves pretty quickly, while Civs I, II and IV had passed the test of time quite well.

Speaking of which, I tend not to think of test or time or call to power as true Civs. I played them and didn't get the wow factor.

Col I got a fair bit of attention, but I tired of Col II almost as quickly as Civ III.

SMAC I still play from time to time after all these years.

How many of you around here has played Civilization from its first incarnation? I got Civilization 1 for my Amiga 500 in 1993 :old: and after a tough start :coffee: (I wasn´t used to strategy games being this complex and overwhelming) I soon got hooked! It is really an amazing journey that we now 2010 are still playing Civilization and is getting the 5th game in the sequel.

It really have been interesting to study the evolution of this franchise from its first daring steps into this behemoth that is Civ 4 Beyond the Sword. Let´s hope Civ 5 will continue to improve on this wonderful series! :goodjob:
Yes! I too am an Amiga 500/Civilization 1 guy!
Later year turns would take FOREVER to process AI moves...

Started with Civ 1 and kept going. Civ 2 with its expansions (including Test of Time, which I enjoyed). Civ 3 with its expansions and Civ 4 through BtS. I also played Alpha Centauri and CtP (but not CtP2).

I played Civ I on my buddy's 386, played Civnet on my own 486, then Civ II was on my various computers for about 10 years. I bought Civ III and all it's expansions at the same time, either shortly before or shortly after Civ IV came out. I played that until my wife bought me Civ IV for my birthday right around the time Warlords came out. I have stayed current with releases since. I also played Master of Orion 1, 2, and 3 (meh) and Master of Magic. Civ series, Master of Magic and Panzer General 1 are my all time favorite games. Master of Magic really deserves a sequel.

I avoided Civ 1 until 1993 because it wasn't a war game!

Doh! I'm such uh ijit!

Even if Civ 4 is a vastly superior game, I still think the most magic Civ-experiences was with Civ 1 on my Amiga in 1993. It was such an incredibly revolutionary, complex and overwhelming game back then. Playing from 4000 BC until 2000 AD? Versus AI-controlled civilizations inspired by historical counterparts? With accurate units, buildings, technologies and wonders for each era? I was in Civ-heaven...

Also, the game had an incredible, well-written manual and a somber, serious mood somewhat missing from later, more cartoony sequels. When Stalin assured you "We confirm the eternal friendship between our glorious civilizations", you couldn´t help but feel a bit touched. And when Shaka greeted you with a: "OUR WORDS ARE BACKED UP BY NUCLEAR WEAPONS", you knew the man wasn´t kidding...

Oh, the memories... :)

civ1 on the amiga.... i never played civ2 for some reason, hmmm. i still play the odd (very odd) game of civ1 on xp, i even visit the civ1 forum ocassionally :)

Civ 1 on the Amiga here too. I loved it, but was pretty clueless first time - I vividly remeber a horde of Mongol chariots over-running my meagre defences. I've played each one since them, except CivRev.

I found Civ 2 completely by chance. It came in a pack with Risk I and Risk II. I had it for at least a month before I decided to try it, and as soon as I did I got completely hooked. Had Civ 2 not come in that pack I wanted anyway I probably never would have found this awesome game series. When I first started playing I had no clue what I was doing, but that didn't stop me from playing and learning as I went (it was so hard to learn that game with absolutely 0 help with it). Just as I was starting the figure the game out Civ 3 came out. I bought Civ 3 immediately and read through the massive manual that came with it before I even installed it. I can't wait for Civ V I just hope I will be able to run it.

Keep up the great work Fireaxis!!

If CivNet counts, then I have been playing it since Civ 1! Took me the longest time to figure out how the game worked. Totally baffled me at the time. I would just found a city and not know what to do after that, couldn't even advance a turn. It didn't come with any sort of manual since it was packaged with the PC. I was 9 at the time though, don't know if that's a valid excuse... But nonetheless I am older and wiser now. :p

Same story here, and I was a similar age, about 8 I think! CivNet came with our Packard Bell computer, which also came with loads of other cool software (Ecco the Dolphin :D), but CivNet definitely hooked me. I was rubbish at it, I built cities in checkerboard patterns and wondered why they never grew. I was so happy when I discovered that it was possible to put something onto a Sail (boat). Loved the music too - in fact my parents still remember waking up to the English music early on a Saturday morning.

I started with the Civilization board game, with its expansion to Advanced Civilization. On weekends in college we would have marathon 24-hour games with 6 players (the max). It was awesome!

Sid has admitted to borrowing a lot of ideas for his computer game from that original board game.

SO, I think this is relevant to the topic at hand. :)

I had Civilization when I was little for the PC, I never really understood it though. I picked it up again a few years later and enjoyed playing it. Then I discovered that they'd made a few sequels to the game and I bought Civ IV.

Civ1 on the Amiga. I'd never played such an abstract strategy game before and it took me some time to get wth the "settler"-unit with the large wings was good for.
