Way back in '91 or '92 a buddy of mine showed up to school with Civilization. We lived on campus in residence and would find a computer lab that was open at night somewhere (Civ I fit on two floppies and didn't need to be installed!). We'd be in there all night!! I remember on more than one occasion getting back to the dorm in time to shower and go to first class. Haha.. good times!

I have trouble believing 64% of people here have played Civilization since the first one! I've played since the second one, so maybe I'm jealous that I was relatively late to the bandwagon, but there were a lot of young people who voted on that age poll, and there's no way any of them were playing since the first Civ.

Yeah, I found that odd too. Young whippersnappers! ;)

I think mostly the oldest players care to vote on this poll. There are probably many players who started with Civ 3 but didn't care to vote in this poll where they'd look like babies.

I played Civ I at the computer lab in high school during lunch, instead of going to the cafeteria. I ate lunch during class! I remember playing as Hammurabi and building mines all over the Arabian peninsula before I realized you only got benefits from improvements you could work within your city window!

Who, me?
I started with Civ 2. Played that one into the dirt.
Looking at the poll, I'm a little surprised how Civ 1 is running away with the result. I mean, it was 20 years ago. I was too young to play Civ 1. Where's the under-25 crowd?

They're playing total war, or an FPS, or something on a console, mostly.

Civ I here too, on a 386 (EGA graphics baby, MAN was that a step forward). Was helping a BBS-friend to move, and it was the only game we could find to make sure her computer was hooked up properly once we had her moved in. I recall not sleeping at all that night. Borrowed the game, and haven't looked back since.

já lá vai à tanto tempo...
I started with civ 1 when I was what... I can't remember...
I think the only one that I can't remember if I played was the serious of The Call to power.

I started with Civ3 and I'm still playing it. I played cIV for a while, but for some reason it got tiring and went back to Civ3. I'm looking forward to ciV now that SoD's are gone.

Civ I on Amiga 2000 on '92. Might have been '91, but I doubt it. Wasn't so hard for me to adapt since I'd played somewhat similar game, Strategic Conquest, on my dad's Mac in the eighties. I've been periodically hooked on each version ever since, though my interest comes and goes.

SMAC was amazing too. Missed Colonization 1 for some reason. I guess it wasn't my strategy game time of year when it came out and the subject didn't seem as interesting. CTPs I tried out, but didn't really play. They had some interesting individual ideas, but on the whole didn't really work out. One more civlike game I got to mention, even though it really has nothing to do with Sid or Firaxis, is Master of Magic. Absolutely loved that one.

Started with Civ III, didn't like Civ IV that much, went back to Civ III.

You could cheat in civ 1 with settlers developing terrain by clicking on them and giving command several times in a turn to complete the improvement in 1 turn.

Civ 2 to me was just ok, because I was getting into fps like duke nukem and castle wolfenstein, and then mmorpg's.

Colonization was a fun diversion from regular civ, kinda like the civ4 colonization is now.

Alpha Centauri concepts gave me revelations in the way I perceived peoples' agendas in my late teens, early 20s. Also the hunter seeker algorithim cinematic was the main reason I read and absorbed "The Art of War". Imagine my disappointment when I found out the game quote was paraphrased from context in three different chapters. But, meh.

I skipped civ 3. I love civ 4.

well, i wonder more about where the above-40 crowd is ! i know, most of them only play the game and don't surf forum sites. and remember that there are also fans who disliked civ4 and still playing civ3, smac and even ctp, civ2. i still play smac sometimes, for ex.

i know most of the hardcore civ fans are ~35-40. such polls related to age in this forum site may no give the exact average ages of civ gamers-"by heart". it gives u average age of all civ gamers but about those who play it by heart, the average age should be between 35-40, i am quite sure of this. for guys>30, civ has a special place. for guys~20, civ saga might be sth similar to RTS games.

think of this; i am 31 now and i started playing civ saga with civ1 in 93. but it think it was published in 91. i still play games much. so a guy like me (who plays at 31) who was playing civ1 in 91 is 50 yo now.

shortly, if u made such a poll in another civ forum of the web, you would have even a higher ratio of civ1 beginners dominating.

Reading this poll indicates two things:

* The Civ-fans are very loyal to their franchise and are still sticking around for iteration five after almost 20 years of "Civ-ing"

* Only a minority of Civ-players have jumped aboard in the recent years, which may cause a little bit of concern about the strength and number of a new generation of Civ-players which is required if the franchise shall stand the test of time

just don't be surprised with it. i will add a few notes to my post (#96)

elder gamers don't post as much messages as younger ones. college students have enough time to play and post both but elder guys can just visit the forum site seldomly. so most of the guys that you had mutual dialogue in thread might be younger guys. still, a large portion of all the forum site might be rather elder guys.

i am exceptional these days and i can visit the forum during the day at work and play in the evenings at home. so i can do both.

i also know most elder civ gamers aren't even registered to any forum. there are also some guys who told me this; "i learned a lot from CFC in first years of civ4 but i don't log in any more. i can't find the time."

I've playing civ '96, stating with Civilization (I). It seems very likely this is a lifetime "relationship". :)
Thank You Sid! :goodjob:

And I'm more civ fan/junkie than ever thanks to Rise of Mankind/A New Dawn.
Thank You modders community also. :goodjob:

(I remember I've got 286PC that time with 1M RAM, and when Civ2 came out I was shocked that it requires 486 and 8M RAM. I tought I've never got so strong PC ever.)
