How much do you know of the World Today? Try my quiz!

I made 17/20. I consider it a relatively good score, since the quiz mainly focused on Europe

Anyway, it was a fun test Kinniken and I'm happy to see that there is a question related to my country.

17 is definitely good: the average is 13.5 now.

As for the questions, they are a bit euro-centric right now because most of them were proposed by Hitro (German), Pillager (British) and me (French). Feel free to add some Latin American ones :)

Ah, this is more like it. Took it again, about half of the questions were different and scored 20.

17 - d*mn, MCdread, I could have been top if it wasn't for you ;)

There were spelling mistakes in these two questions.

Which county(s) does (do) have the most representatives in the European parliament?

Should be countries

George Bush and Tony Blair are famous for their closenest. To which of the following pairs have they been compared?

Should be closeness

The Kabila question is too obvious. Unless you are trying to decieve people into believing it is trick question.

Consider removing '(mostly arabs)' from the Opec question or rephrase it, as this will probably give the answer away, since you are being too concise.

Consider removing Guiseepe Verdi from the question as to is not a political scientist and exchange with for instance Friedrich Schiller. Verdi is too well known. Also Marx is technically an economist and not a politilal theorician. Exchange with Lenin perhaps.

Also: Who was the last President of the USSR?

One of the answers say Eltsin. Should be Yeltsin

A good test BTW:)

Just submitted a couple of Latin American questions. Hope they're usefull :)

Doctor: thanks for the tips. Will do :)

Luiz: I added both. The one on Rio de Janeiro was a bit specific though. Is there anyway you could submit a related but less specific question on the same theme? (ie, maybe "From what countries were the founders of Rio de Janeiro?") Thanks!

Doctor, just a note: you are over-estimating people on the Kabila question... According to the logs, roughly a quarter of respondents got it wrong (most often by picking the "South African who went to the ISS" option), which is a fair proportion for a question graded "low" in difficulty, especially considering that people here are usually more knowledgeable than average on politic.

Ooh, just 12, though reading the answers I should have had 15. Still, that's a failing grade. I blame the American media. I knew that 9/11 hijacker question in 3 miliseconds, but the Kabila one that everyone says is so easy? That was a lucky guess.

19 outta 20. Easy... :)

That's due to the special script that detects CFC moderators and hands them the easy questions... You know, "diplomatic moves" and all :D I'll be making a "hard" section soon though.

BTW, would you mind adding a few asian questions? I have to admit I find it difficult to think of good Asian questions :(

Sorry abou that. I'll think of a better one and submit. I guess I got a bit carried away. It's common knowledge here in Brazil, and I just read a great book, by a french author, about Villegaignon, Antartic France, and their fight against the portuguese for Rio. I believe the original title is "Rouge Brésil".

Great test, Kinniken. I'm abit ashamed that I got only 15 right, though :(

Luiz: thanks.

XIII: Politic and historic/geographic/economic questions which help understand current politic.

For exemple, "What Roman general invaded Gaul?" is not very good, because frankly it is no longer very relevant today, but "What colonial power lost control of modern-day Vietnam in a bloody war prior to the Vietnam war?" is better, because it helped shape the modern world and Franco-American relations.

XIII: Thanks a lot! I just confirmed five of your questions :) I did not take the ones on the Dali kingdom or the Manchurian provinces (definitely too specific), nor the one on the Brunei & Singaporean dollars, whom I felt was too hard that way. Maybe you could submit a more general one, like "To which currency is the Brunei dollar tied?" or something?

I also changed the alternative dates in your historical, which were insanely close together ;) :

Question 61: When did Brunei become independent?
Author: XIII - Category: Background History - Difficulty: 3/5
It has been independent since the Middle-Ages - 0
1925 - 0
1947 - 0
1984 - 0

Question 64: When was Malaysia formed?
Author: XIII - Category: Background History - Difficulty: 3/5
1925 - 0
1948 - 0
1963 - 0
1985 - 0

Question 65: When did the last emperor of China ascend the throne?
Author: XIII - Category: Background History - Difficulty: 4/5
1685 - 0
1895 - 0
1909 - 0
1923 - 0

Ignore the zeros after each choice - they are the number of time someone voted for each.

isn't France only associated with the NATO? They are not a NATO emmber anymore IIRC.....

France is no longer part of military command structure, but it is still a NATO member. It is still bound by the common-defence clause, for exemple. France also participate in NATO missions. In practice, I have read that the difference is mostly symbolic these days, and does not affect much France's contribution to NATO tasks.
I recognise though that the question is deliberately tricky - you can thanks Hitro for that one ;)

14 out of 20.

Ones I got wrong:
When the last Chinese emperor came to the throne.

Brunei's independence.

West European nation with largest Jewish minority.

Who didn't adopt the Euro. (Got 2 of the 3 right, at least.)

Most reps in Euro parliament.

Slowest 2002 growth among the four largest economic nations.

Disappointed, but not bad for an American that shouldn't know anything.

What I DID get right, if anyone were interested for statistical purposes:

Who is currently Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany?

Before Chirac and Schroeder, other French Presidents and German Chancellors famously worked together. Of the following, which formed a comparable team?

Which US president was the first to visit the People's Republic of China?

Of the following countries, which is not included in the negotiations on the etablisment of a 'Free Trade Area of the Americas'?

Which African country has the biggest economy?

When did the Koren War officially end?

Of the following countries, which are members of the NAFTA?

What is the only catholic-majority country in Eastern Asia?

Which of these countrys are part of the Mercosul(Mercosur)?

What colonial power lost control of modern-day Vietnam in a bloody war prior to the Vietnam war?

Which Latin American country defaulted (failed to pay its debts) in 2001, provoking a severe economic crisis? -- Especially since I know people that were affected by this...:(

Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the longest serving asian Head of Government, retired in 2003. He was Prime Minister of:

After WW2 Germany was divided (into occupation zones) between which victorious powers?

Who is Joseph Kabila?
