I've taken over both plutonium and I've severed oil from the cities. There is one other oil in the sea. Don't they need offshore platform for that?

They just built a destroyer but I can't figure out where they got the resources to do that. Here is a screenshot.

'severed oil'? Unless I'm seeing it wrong, there is a fort tile with oil in the north of the continent.
Forts connect resources.
By the way, you've got to pillage to disrupt the connection, not just sit on it.

Wow, do forts connect resources? I didn't know that. It's funny cause I always asked myself "Why the stupid AI builds forts on resorces?"

Wow, so even if you are blocking a road or you pillage all roads to a "forted" resource, they still have access to it? I thought you needed both roads and wells for oil.

Oh, no, pillaging the roads is fine, but remember that rivers also work as (unpillageable) roads. And the northern oil is roaded.

If the fort is coastal ( as is the case above ), pillaging the roads around it will not be enough. You will have to blockade the sea around it as well

Or just destroy the fort with your troops and make sure it's not rebuilt. Bombers do a respectable job in keeping enemy strategic resources off line.

Learn something new every day. I thought if you parked on it, that it would disrupt the access.

Even if blockaded, I am not sure if they lose the connection. At least it is impossible to blockade foreign trade route by sea. Maybe with privateers it will work as they are shown as hostile to everyone?

AI can use your own borders for trade network even while at war, so there's no reason it couldn't pass through a blockade unless the rules are random.

Yup, which gives a way to connect resources the instant you have the enabling tech (calendar resources, oil, etc..) Build the fort first.

It also gives you a way to pre-build a replacement for those strategic resources. Put one improvement (well or fort) up, build the 2nd to 1t from completion. In case of sabotage, you only need one worker turn to hook back up.

Forts also let you base aircraft, launch paratroopers, and cross small areas of land with ships.

Is there a limit to the number of aircraft and missiles you can station on a fort?

I think near borders, a fort on a forested hill with a small stack and aircraft& missiles can be a very good defense against suprise attacks. I remember once destroying a 5 battleships stack and some transporters only with missiles while my navy was out there attacking enemy ships in the open seas ;)

Just tested by world builder real quickly. Yeah, forts can only base four air units like a normal city. Missiles seem unlimited. You can always build more forts next to each other though!

Those are some crazy tips!

So we can also launch paratroopers from forts just like in cities with airports?

Don't forget AIs also get sweetheart deals with each other, if you trade for oil it'd cost you an arm and leg, but they can get it for a fish or something.

 This is true. The AI tend to me more genereous towards each other but they just want to get everything you have.

I already owned the fort in the north west so I just had to pillage it to disrupt oil. To the east, I needed to pillage all roads around the oil fort since I didn't have enough units to take it. I probably should have sent multiple spy's to sabotage it.

Anyway, it gave me the naval tech advantage to jump into 2nd place and take his capital, including the statue of zeus to relieve my weariness. The south east city had Versailles so the cities shouldn't be too expensive.

They have assembly line to my inferior riflemen but cannons are helping me take city's using my unique unit.
