Well, it took me a while to think up of something that would cause a downfall and that is Global Warming. Yes, when it really starts to hit the planet it will raise temperature in impoverished countries that already have problems with the environmental/economic problems. The result of this will be that massive migrations will occur from nations such as Mexico, India and Nigeria. That in result will overwhelm the nations that they are migrating to and bring that country into chaos and lower the living standards in the host country. So in other words it seems that the people who don't believe in global warming are also the ones that want to close off the borders to illegal immigration... pretty ironic right?

So what proof do you have that we are suddenly going to get weaker and decline into obscurety.

So far, american history has roughly been the same as roman history. Both countries started out as kingdom (or at least had a king). Then they got rid of the king, and became a republic. They slowly grew and grew. Then they had a civil war/rebellion where they gave more freedom, americans lost slaves and pleibians got vote. Then there was a peroid of big wars, and both countries found themselves as the greatest known power (us:world wars, rome: punic wars to conquest of greece). Then the romans got a century of civli wars, and became an empire. So that would put the US as it is now at about the same place rome was in 100BC. I think the us will get a second civil war, and some one will proclaim themselves dictator. The American Empire will then become incredibaly rich, but will get so big that ill seperate in 2. Then one side will be destroyed by a poor,'barbarian' power, in about 200 years. then we'll get a thrid major dark age.

Because of other factors which dont seem to be happening to us maybe?

And even so, theres only so many countries on the planet, if all of them rose to power and fell into obscurity another one would rise up again.

If human history is neverending this can be a cycle.

I never said obscurity, just that we will kind of fade to the background. We'll definetly be a "major player", just not on the scale we have nowadays.

What makes you think we would do nothing about it? If it was like you said then we would just cut off immigration to the United States.

Aha... Yes if it only was that easy and simple. Do you honestly think that if there was a swarm of millions of immigrants coming here do you think that we could do anything about it?

edit: If you meant that the military could and would just kill any immigrants that come near the border then think how negatively the rest of the world would think of that.

Well we dont have problems with swarms of immigrants right now, and your situation and its outcome would happen is highly unrealistic anyway.

No reason to decline into obscurity, but the US will, fairly soon, be behind China and India just due to population, once the economies start to converge. It will continue to be one of the largest and richest countries in the world, though.

I don't think there's any political processes that will lead to dissolution in this day and age. and most modern, cohesive states will keep their present borders for the foreseeable future. Unlike Rome, citizens within US borders identify themselves as Americans (a bit too much, in fact), so there won't be large revolts or separatist movements.

Large-scale war is difficult in this day and age, since nations can't really fight in an age of nukes. Terrorists can kill a lot of people, and theoretically that could end it, when technology advances to a point where a small organization can obtain nuclear or biological weapons capable of damage on a national scale.

Well, maybe it does take a genius to see that China and India are growing at 8% per year and quickly converging on the leaders, but fortunately, I happen to be that genius.
