The Wehrmact had just demonstrated rather convincingly that they were not on their last legs, and the Nazi regime wasn't exactly in danger of imminent implosion either, so I doubt that M-G's success would have finished the war in 3 and a bit months.
And it wouldn't matter anyway. The western empire was governed from Milan. Politically speaking, Rome was an irrelevance - a rather worthy old place full of cultural conservatives completely out of touch with the rest of the empire.

I still doubt it. The Republic was on life support since Sulla's first dictatorship, like Cheezy said. It's not as though Rome didn't have a surfeit of ridiculously ambitious, selfish, militarily skilled persons anyway. Looking at the sixties BC, you kind of get a feeling as though this is twilight. And, hey, boom, it was.
For want of a cleaning kit, the rifle was lost
For want of a rifle, the soldier was lost
For want of a soldier, the section was lost
For want of a section, the platoon was lost
For want of a platoon, the company was lost
For want of a company, the battalion was lost
For want of a battlion, the regiment was lost
For want of a regiment, the army was lost
And all because a man lost his cleaning kit! A small change in the input can lead to a massive change in result
In addition to helping Hurley get a rewrite of The Empire Strikes Back to Lucas, I'd make sure Whedon's Firefly series lasts a tight 5 seasons with an epic series-long arc punctuated by character development arcs and stand-alone episodes, the mythology would be consistent and relatively coherent (we'd want some vagueness to argue about). There'd be plenty of little details to savor and characters-to-be-continued later (e.g., a minor player in Episode 1 becoming a featured villain by Episode 30, a passing reference in Episode 3 leading to a full-blown Episode 41, etc.)
Then I'd look for Cpl. Hitler. and help him get into Art School.
Maybe it would prevent the series from being so successful, and we wouldn't have to put up with the current tripe? Still, he should re-write ROTJ, not TESB.
And it's on topic, since it's something we're talking about changing. If we just talk about Star Wars, then we're off-topic. So technically, you're off-topic, and we're not.
It probably was too risky to introduce any Star Wars reference, they too easily derail a thread.
Well, then I guess I'll have to get into what my grandfather calls "The Wayback Machine" and not include any mention of it. Except that would be yet another timeline, sigh...
