Im failing a remedial algebra course in college

a) PEMDAS, just know that.
b) also PEMDAS/Order of Operations
c) " "
d) Multiplying/Dividing base to a power (as long as the bases matches) = adding/subtracting the exponents
e-h) " "
i) 1.234 x 10^-7, just move the decimal so that the first number becomes a # between 1 and 10. The 10^whatever follows that. Just count how many times you moved the decimal and in which direction.

Edit: Shoulda looked at the OP date.

First post for a 3 year necro?

Wow.

Well, If Xanik is still working on that test, the necro-post surely helps him alot!

In other words: what the hell was the point of the necro??

I would love to see Xanik post now: OH THANKS! NOW I FINALLY UNDERSTAND!

God bless Xanikk.

I agree with go slower on the exams, and double-check your work. Small errors in math tend to have a chain reaction effect leading to failure. Also do practice problems that have already been solved and be sure you know the applicable rules in those problems, verbatim.

EDIT: Wowee Zowee...necro'd

I don't understand why people bump old these old threads. I mean, do they spend all their time trawling through the forum or something? What bored people.

Anyway, I used to write questions for a few math math competitions, so the above is actuallly a professional opinion.
Which competitions?

Is that person even real? Nobody could get every question wrong on a test yet insist that they understand it.

A quick google check shows that Xanikk is still in World of Warcraft as of December 2008.

Test of math
Calculator allowed

1. (+15)-2[17-(-4)*(-3)]
2. 3*12-24/6*2
3. [7(2x-3)-8x]+[2(9-5x)-11]
4. x^36*x^(-19)*x^6/ [x^51*x^(-38)]
5. 2z^(-5)/3z^(-2)
6. [x^(-4)y^7]^(-3)
7. [2x^15v^(-7)]^5
8. [2u^4y^(-3)]^(-5)/[3u^(-2)y^(-8)]^2
9. Scientific notation of 0.0000001234

The answers(sic):

1.-31
2.28
3.7(10x)+(12-3x)-8)
4.x^17
5.(2/3*z)^(-2)
6.x^(-12)y^21

I imagine they search something that interests them and then look at the posts, forgetting that they are mostly years old.

I'm a little rusty but I'll try to help. I didn't read other posts except for the first page so I could be wrong. I did see something and writing is in the way of others.

e. 2z-5 - 3z-3 is -z^-8 or 1
z^8

f. negative times negative is positive so it's x^12y^-21.

g. I think you have to times every piece by 5. So it's 10x^75y^-35.

h. 1
-------
4u^24y

Remember go to each piece I believe.

a. Is wierd because I get 6120 because I times each piece from the center then a certain property ensures the same answer.

It's been years and I could be wrong so don't assume I'm right.

It's coming back so I'll edit with what I think.

C. [7(2x-3)-8x]/[2(9-5x)-11)
14x-21-8x/18-10x-11
6x-21/-10x+7
-4x+28
or
Forgot last part but it's logically small answer like -x/7. or x^7?
