THE ASSASSIN'S ORDER
Government: Complex. One could call it a military junta, an atheist theocracy, a elected dictatorship, or anarchy depending on your views. However, what is certain is that the elusive Assassin's Order controls the government in all aspects. Only high members of the Order have any role in decision-making, which is headed by the Mentor. However, social and economic freedoms are unhampered by the otherwise all-controlling government. This leads to a situation where the masses are free to do whatever they please except enter the politics of the nation.

History: (Note: Excepting the first word of a sentence, all capitalized instances of the word "Assassin" refers to members of the Order, while "assassin" refers to the profession or non-Order members)
The Order can date back all the way to the lifetime of Xerxes I, who was assassinated by known Assassin Darius. While the history of the Order before this assassination is led in mystery, and that this assassination is only remembered for being the first recorded use of the Hidden Blade, it can be deduced by scholars that the Order in some way existed since prehistoric times. The Order was chiefly founded to its resistance to the Templars, followers to fulfill an ancient conspiracy to enslave humanity. The Assassins, however, believe humanity should be left free to make their own choices.
History becomes more clear, however, in Roman times. The Roman Senate was in fact a body for the Templars. This means in no way that Templars were the only people elected. In fact, all 23 assassinators of Julius Caesar, a Templar, were Order members. While the exact reason of Caesar's death is unknown in the Order-Templar conflict, it is known that the Templar friends of Caesar went after most of them. Cleopatra, as an ally of Caesar, was offed by an Assassin while she attempted to hide herself from the Roman invasion. History "corrected" the death as a suicide, however. Caligula was also a Templar, and his death was caused by the Assassin Leonius.
The Order, however, had an golden age during the Crusades. Both the Templars and the Order went public as a crusader force and an independent nation, respectively. During the Third Crusade, the conflict went into their climax as a Al-Maulim, the Mentor of Order at the time, was in fact a Templar. He and nine other Templars lead a conspiracy to tear down the Order in the inside. To hide his involvement before it became too late for the Order, he had recently scorned Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad to kill the other nine. As Altaïr did his master's work, he undercovered the secret plot, and killed Al-Maulim. While regarded at first as a traitor, the other Assassins realized they had been deceived by their former Mentor, and elected Altaïr to become the new Mentor.
Altaïr is widely considered one of the best Mentors in history. He wrote down The Codex, a recording of Order knowledge known up to that very moment. Without it, many knowledge would had been lost to the sands of time. He not only recovered from a low point of Order history but made it one of the high points. Scores of Templars were defeated, and their plot received a permanent setback. However, Altaïr thought the Order should again go underground, so he started what would be known as the Mass Migration....
