Intro: "NES" as a subtext seems rather pointless, so here we go with the Shadow of Rome, an NES based on the results of a game of mine in Victoria: Revolutions as Sardinia-Piedmont. THis game covers 1836-1936, and the results of this period will be seen in the stats and map.
The Story:
To fully relate the story of the Shadow of Rome, we must take a look at each continent step by step. We will begin with the Americas and end with Asia and the Pacific. For additional historical information please go here:

NORTH AMERICA
In 1870 the United States of America was ravaged by civil war. The Republican Party's Thaddeus Stevens swore to emancipate the slaves by any means possible. The inauguration of President Stevens broke the country into two, as the southern states from Arizona to Virginia revolted against the authority of Washington. Due to Italian intervention the Confederacy won its independence and the United States was sundered forever. From the CSA's independance in 1872, the Confederacy and the USA fought wars nearly every five to six years until the turn of the century, when machine guns made war a very expensive affair. THe result of these wars were the revolts of California, Deseret (later annexed by California), and New England. With the eruption of the Great American War in 1909, the United States' Union Party sparked the final War Between the States. Though the USA began on the right foot, Italy's entry into the war in 1912 sealed the USA's fate, and victory was only a year away for the CSA, Brazil, and the other Allies. Since the end of the Great War the nations of north America have been in serious trouble, with the 1920 election of the fascist American Party in the USA and the CSA's own civil war, when pro-slave Texas broke away from the Confederacy. This troubled continent is ripe for another Great War.
CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA
Central America and the Carribbean have been quiet and calm compared to their northern and southern neighbors since the end of the Mexican Civil War in 1866. The Trade Union of the Carribbean, formed between Spain, Mexico, the United States of Central America, Colombia, and Haiti in 1879 has successfully kept the peace in this region even as the rest of America has burst into flames.
In South America Brazil has slowed devoured the continent country by country, Peru, Ecuador, and Chile falling last in the Great American War. Supported by Italy until the Italian Revolution in 1934, Brazil has formed a power to be reckoned with, and war may soon break out with neighboring Venezuela or the Trade Union.
EUROPE/AFRICA
From 1836 onward Europe has been a place of complete turmoil, from revolution, riots, revolts, unification, and wars of all types. To list everything would take pages upon pages. Therefore, we shall simply state the status of Europe today. The United Kingdom was dissolved in 1852 by Italy and the new states of Scotland and Ireland, and the British Isles are divided. The democratic English Empire still spans the globe, with outposts in every continent, from New Zealand to Newfoundland to India. Germany, united in 1880, is the world's leading industrial power, and is one of Europe's most stable democracies since the parliamentary elections of 1894. Austria-Hungary remains one of Germany's most loyal allies, despite its brutal regime and its tendency to fight its neighbors over the smallest slight. France is a land of chaos, constantly fighting rebels and rioters in all of its cities and colonies. Democrats, communists, and fascists all battle for supremacy in France, trying to gain power as a different party is seemingly installed every other month. Iberia remains stable as it has since the 1840s, and has been refuge for evacuees from the rest of Europe and occasionally the Americas as well. Greece and Turkey remain bitter enemies having fought wars at Italy's provacation since 1863. Italy has rebuilt a new Roman Empire aftering unification in 1846, over 90% of Africa and the Middle East fell under Italian sway. In 1934, Italy itself saw a communist coup d'etat, which was supported by communists of all colors and types, forming one of the world's truly equal oppurtunity governments, as every member of the Euro-African Socialist Republic is an equal in the eyes of the government. Even now, greedy eyes in Rome look northward to spread the Revolution.
ASIA/PACIFIC
Since its victory in the Opium Wars, the Qing Dynasty has been beloved by its people, and the Chinese Empire has been one of the most stable nations, avoiding the turmoil which wrecked other nations across the globe. This was strained in recent years however after defeats against Japan in Korea in 1903, and England in Indochina in 1928. The loss of life was heavy as the backward Chinese Army was not suited to modern combat and fell like wheat to the machine guns of the industrial nations. Japan and Russia have fought 3 wars since 1905, and the Russians have come out ahead every time, taking control of numerous islands and becoming the dominant naval power in the Pacific. Through these wars, Russian interests have waned in the rest as the Czars look to the east for expansion, perhaps at the expense of the beleaguered United States.
Further south, Australia had formed the first communist dictatorship in 1909 after supporting England in a futile and bloody war in Africa against Italy. The ideals of the Australian communists had a significant effect on those who led the Roman Revolt in 1934 and perhaps an alliance of communist nations may soon occur.

SAMPLE NATION
Germany
Constitutional Monarchy
Capitol: Berlin
Ideology: Conservative
Dissent: 1%
IC per turn: 16
IC to spend: 16
Army: 650,000 Infantry, 100 Light Tanks
Navy: 3 Battlecruisers, 8 Light Cruisers, 45 Destroyers, 80 Submarines
Air Force: NA
-Government and Ideology-
Pretty self-explanatory, you can change them both if you like, though you will suffer dissent penalties if you do. Also have a good reason for changing them (elections are good reasons). Also Government and ideology will help NPCs decide whether to ally themselves with you or not. They are also there to help you figure out the character of your nation for use in stories and diplomacy.
-Dissent-
The higher this is, the more likely you'll be seeing a rebellion of sorts. Beware the voice of the people.
-Industry and Cities-
Industry is the heart of your nation, if your industry collapses so will your nation. Some nations are decidely more powerful industrial forces than others, and this will be reflected. ICs are the spending points of your game, ICs are needed for research and production of units. To increase industry you must pay a price double of your existing amount. I.E. to raise from 4 to 5 you must pay 8 IC or to raise from 7 to 8 you must pay 14 IC. You can trade IC points for tech or weapons from other nations.
Cities are the heart of industry, if you lose your cities, you lose your industry. remember this when ordering a city fight.
-Army-
Pretty easy to guess what this stat is for. Here are the prices and unit types (for now). Irregulars cannot be bought and will come only though events, and by starting with them. Types of units will grow as the game goes on, with some nations perhaps creating superior equipment when compared to others.
Infanty: The basic ground-pounder soldier. he takes the brunt of the fighting, a staple for any army. 10,000 Infantry for 1 IC.
Light Tank: The newest weapon in warfare, better than armored cars and perhaps capable of starting a whole new style of war. 100 Light Tanks for 1 IC.
Medium Tank/Lee/T-21/Panzer II/Panzer III/Gustav: An improved tank with multiple heavy guns and a revolving turret. Requires Medium Tank technology to build. 50 Medium Tanks for 1 IC.
Cavalrymen: Light mounted soldiers, useful for scouting and raids. 10,000 Cavalry for 1 IC.
Marines: Soldiers trained in specially amphibious warfare and heavy assualts. 5,000 Marines for 1 IC.
-Navy-
Guess what boats are for? Sinking other boats!
Super Battleship: The heaviest ship available, the Super Battleship has no rival on the high seas, and thus a high cost. 1 Super Battleship for a whopping 5 IC. REQUIRES IMPROVED NAVAL GUNS.
Battleship: The second heaviest ship available, capable of pounding smaller ships into dust. These are the pride of any navy. 1 Battleship for 3 IC.
Battlecruiser: A poor man's battleship, slightly faster and significantly less armed. Useful for escort and fighting against nations without Battleships. 1 Battlecruiser for 2 IC.
Heavy Cruiser: A fast and relatively well armed ship, no match for a Battlecruiser or Battleship, but still formidable. 1 Heavy Cruiser for 1 IC.
Light Cruiser: Less equipped than a Heavy Cruiser, but faster and useful in escort services. 2 Light Cruisers for 1 IC.
Destroyer: anti-sub ships, also useful for light escorts, though they haul out running if a Battleship turns up. 5 Destroyers for 1 IC.
Submarine: Useful for terrorizing the sealanes, the modern pirates. 5 Submarines for 1 IC.
-Air Force-
You may have noticed the lack of an Aircraft Carrier in the above stats. Allow me to explain. In 1909 the United States, under the guidance of the now defunct Union Party invaded the Confederate States and provoked the Great American War. The US Army penetrated into the Confederacy as far south as Atlanta before the arrival of the Italian Army and the turning of the tide. In the early phases of the war, a small town known as Kitty Hawk was shelled by the US, killing all of its inhabitants and two brother inventors who were stranded in the south when the war broke out. Due to the death of the Wright brothers, heavier than air flight was never established as feasible. But with government sponsored research and new interests in rockets, perhaps this may soon change.
Biplane: 25 for 1 IC. Provides reliable air recon for the first time ever. Used with radio, the biplane could be the entrance into a new era of warfare.
Fighter/Warhawk: 50 for 1 IC. Wooden piston-engined craft. This new plane, armed with two forward mounted machine guns, provides nations with their first feasible fighter aircraft.
