In which we Discuss the Quality of OT

Problem is, the average CFC member has an ego the size of a small country. You just have to look at any thread involving IQs or "how intelligent are you?" etc to see that. Quality Member badges would seriously go to some people's heads, and you'd probably end up with a 2 tiered OT. I like that everyone's equal.

It's probably a good idea for new members to be encouraged to see how OT conducts itself before posting, though.

I see where you're going with this, but this is also the reason why we don't rate members. We don't need some kind of popularity contests or old boys' club when it comes to ranking members.

Idea: Maybe we could give some kind of a "Quality Member" badge to people who... well, are quality members in CFC. They could be given some privileges, such as a larger PM box or something, and also a cool badge under the user name like moderators have. I don't think that it would cause a big change in the quality of OT, but in long term it could raise it slightly, as new members could be encouraged to post with quality.

My 0.037592385 cents.

Like the "reputation points" system that some forums have?

That is already being done unofficially.

Unofficially, it may happen anyway, you're right, cliques may form like anywhere else. But it's different than having it codified into the board.

And bingo - it's not long at all until an example comes along (see the age/sex thread):

I even tried to intervene to politely request we avoid immature comments (se page 4). But then by the time I come back - before I can intervene, it's been locked without even any indication of what was wrong with it.
Well, if you noted that there was immature comments, then perhaps that is what was wrong with it?

In this particular case, the thread was outside the forum rules (strict interpretation). It was watched, and allowed to proceed. However, when it started to get a bit more explicit, I had two choices: Clean it up, or close it.

In this particular case, I was on my lunch break at work, needing to go to a meeting. As such, I didn't have time to clean it up, so I didn't. I could, however, have cleaned it up later, but given the quality of discussion, given that it was outside the forum rules anyway, and given that it seemed to progress in a similar manner to another thread on this topic, so I figured I'd just leave it closed. And in doing so, figured I'd try the subtle 'peer pressure' approach when providing the reason.

I think OT is good at the moment.

There has been some good stuff thanks to me. :smug:

The biggest annoyance for me right now is copycat/"parody" threads. Sometimes they are indeed mildly amusing, like hk's reverse mermaid thread, but mostly they are just lazy, uncreative attempts at being funny.

Holy Necromacer Batman!

But back to the thread, still the same issues as before; Trolls and rude people. However to add to that, copy cat threads and parody threads that explodes three fold.

You can always find new people...
