Say: how alternative history will this colonial game be? Could I play as a Chinese colonial settlement? ;)

Austrian Colony

Aragonese colony :mischief:

Songhai colony.

Mongol colony! :D

The idea right now is that there is a maintenance cost for provinces based on how far away they are, because everyone knows you have to maintain colonies.
This issue can be averted by a colonial company, which takes control over an area you can designate. It then fills up that area, and instead of paying maintenance they take 50% of the profits as its technically an independent nation.
I'm also toying with the idea of Vekjasfolcvig's culture and religion mechanics (so a same culture province gives more cash than a different culture one).
And the more I think about it, the more I feel like having sea provinces on the map, with players being allowed to claim an area in the old world and divide it into up to 10 provinces.
I realise I shoot myself in the foot with that, because people are going to claim all of Europe, so I'm going to have to divide Europe up into regions, with players not allowed to claim in two regions overlapping.
The New World will also be blank, because I like overlapping colonial claims and the result of that
As for religion, the set right now seems to be:
Catholicism
Lutheranism
Calvinism
Anabaptism
Orthodoxy
Sunnis
Shia
(Something Native A)
(Something Native B)
(Something Native C)

Natives will also be in somehow

Specify native religions and make really specific divisions. TIME FOR SAXE-COBURG-GOTHA COLONIES

fixed for specificness
As for native religions, I might just chicken out and divide into Mesoamerican, Iroquoian, Incan, Amazonian, Plains, Southeastern, Midwestern, Californian, Columbian, Southwestern, Cree and Inuit, thereby both solving CivO's problem and creating about 300 new ones.
EDIT: RIP remembering anything about Caribs or Mapuche

To be fair, we are starting in Europe.

My point was the finetoothed comb used for Christianity vs the broken rake used for everything else. Also, Andalusia and north Africa sound like they're on your map, and if its not a historic start, its not inconcievable for a player to try to argue for Judaism

To be fair, we're all probably going to have to start as Christians and everything else is just heathen gobbledygook to our refined ears.

are there any IOT's that make a small state viable? playing as Cyprus is almost always a bad idea becaise of it.

There are some where playing a small isn't isn't suicide, but you still shouldn't expect to be a major force in geopolitics, or even continental. Regional power at best, but you'd have to be really good at science or something non-traditional.

I would say a game like Robert's or Tyo's space one would work best for a small nation. Something that doesn't have hard stats and could possibly even reward you for not being uber aggressive if you play it right.
