iPhone X

The iPhone X from an Android user’s perspective

Another good take. (I'm not a huge fan of The Verge, but I like Vlad's writing.)

I've kind of glossed over how awesome Qi charging is since I've been using it since 2012 - but the ecosystem for it now is pretty bad. I've got a 3-coil Nokia charger from 2012 that still works great, but I haven't been able to find anything comparable to charge my phone at my office. The charges now are all questionable from either an electrical perspective (all the Chinese brands) or a design perspective (come on Samsung, why would I want a fan in my charger?). I expect Apple entering the market will give us a wealth of quality chargers from reputable manufacturers within the next year.

I'll probably get the iPhone X to replace my 6 when it becomes available. I'm excited about ir facial recognition going mainstream in a consumer product and OLED displays are so amazing to look at compare to traditional smartphone screens.

^^^ its already available at any number of porn sites.

Or for people who want the best CPU performance.
Or for people who prioritize security.
Or for people to whom the network effect of iMessage is important.
Or for people who want one of the best phone cameras.
Or for people who want a smartwatch from the world's #1 watch company.
Or for people who don't trust Google on the privacy front.
Or for people who value the integration between iPhone and Macs. (You can seamlessly move between them for calls and texts.)
Or for people who live within a reasonable distance of an Apple store and value the best-in-class support and repair service available there.
Or for people who want a phone with the largest selection of frequency bands for international travel.
Or for people who want or need to make use of accessories or hardware that are only functional with iOS devices.
Or for people who want their phone to be supported for a longer period of time. (Apple is going to be ending iPhone 5 support from 5 years ago with the iOS 11 release in a couple weeks - no Android manufacturer comes close to comparable long-term support.)
Or for people who want functionality or simply support from Apple Pay that Android Pay doesn't provide.
Or for people who want the best wireless headphone connectivity options. (Seriously, the W1 chip blows away standard Bluetooth.)
Or for people who don't want carrier/manufacturer bloat.
Or for people who want a high-end phone with a small screen.
Or for people who want more than one of the above, and can't find any Android devices that check off all of the specific things they're looking for.

Look, I don't have an iPhone, (and don't have any plans to get one in the foreseeable future) but it's disingenuous to pretend that there aren't a multitude of legitimate reasons to choose it over nearly any available Android option.
Ive dropped my galaxy about 50 times, never broke. Dropped my gf's 2 feet, it broke (in a case).

Maybe some/all of the things you said are true but Iphones are still overpriced, fragile, with an irratiting os that doesn't function like an easy to use hard drive like it should.

You should never buy one then. If you did you would always complain about it and never be happy with it. Apple doesn't need you as a customer. Stick with android. It suits you better.

They're expensive. That doesn't necessarily make them overpriced. Apple's dominant performance lead makes them some of the best price : performance devices available.

Past ones have been, not really anymore. The iPhone 8 and Galaxy S8 both have glass backs, and Apple has a better materials engineering team.

*shrug* And I think Firefox OS should be the world's dominant mobile OS. iOS is fine, literally every design detail is painstakingly deliberated. Dragging files around to/from a hard drive is neither a supported nor particularly requested use case. Requiring direct user access to the file system is based on ideas and paradigms that are stuck in the past.

??? And what's better? The ironic thing is Apple invented the "Finder" system (aka : the desktop), which is why I love Macs back in the day.

Better? I can't really answer that, it's different, with advantages and disadvantages. No direct user access to file systems have certain advantages (simplicity, security, privacy, performance), but the system needs to be designed for that from the start for those advantages to be realized. The disadvantages largely lie in lack of low-level access for tasks that need those - e.g. you can't write iOS apps on iOS.

And benchmarks out for the A11. The nytimes review puts it well: The iPhone 8: A Worthy Refinement Before the Next Generation

"And if you are considering upgrading from an Android phone, there’s one area where the new iPhones still rank head and shoulders above their competition — the processor, the engine that runs the entire device, where Apple is so far ahead that it almost feels unfair."

And some more: iPhone 8 Is World's Fastest Phone (It's Not Even Close)

"To really put the A11 Bionic chip through its paces, we put the same 2-minute video, shot in 4K by a drone, on the iPhone 8, Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8+, and then added the same transitions and effects before exporting and saving the video.

The iPhone 8 finished this strenuous task in just 42 seconds, while the Note 8 took more than 3 minutes. The Galaxy S8+ took more than 4 minutes."

Honestly, I don't think Apple priced the iPhone X high enough.

Wow. So Richard Hendrik's idea of a distributed internet across mobile devices may now become a reality. What's the equivalent cpu processor, like an older i3?

Technology can be terrible for anyone under 18. We are not built well for it. Iphones are just an extension of TV and how it changed growing up 50 years ago. It brings both good an bad with it. But there is not stopping it. We are on the path to AI dominance in many aspects of our future lives. There is no cultural going back. You can be a Luddite and force your children to be also (until they leave home or play with other kids). Those who are concerned will use less technology. Most won't.

I do not understand what is so good about this iphone X. It has facial recognition but it has replaced the fingerprint sensor. So Apple has removed a feature which was working well and replaced it for...reasons? It has OLED panels which for the first time are good enough for the iphone, except they are made by Samsung, and at worst resolution and half the brightness of Samsung OLED screens on the Galaxy series.

It does not have a headphone jack like my iphone 6s or expandable storage either. Not good. I am sticking with my iphone 6s again for another year.

I heard that the face ID can't work in the the latest iOS 11 version, and I don't think it is worthy to switch to iPhone X.

From 2017 to 2018, I have been focusing on the news of iPhone x.But the company has disappointed users.Especially the disadvantages of iPhone X.I was disappointed that I had bought a luxury, but not much use.in other words, no matter you are using Android device or iPhone ,Most of the features of the iPhone are available on android phones. so I'm already planning to switch my iPhone to Android.
