Is "Beyond the Sword" dead?

Hey guys, we're basically done with the patch. You'll get it as soon as we can test it. I would guess about 3 weeks.

This is going to be the first real patch, by the way. v303 was meant to have no code changes, just a setting change to deal with some vista issues, and the latest DirectX version on the installer. Unfortunately, we messed up and built it off of a bad branch of the code. Sorry about that.

thank you

Simon

If you had an issue with Securerom, then you'd have to take it up with them, not Firaxis (especially as the choice to use it had absolutely nothing to do with Firaxis).

Impossible to ascertain as an end user as all the agreements are commercially sensitive

Completely false. Retailers have a fixed returns policy to their customer full stop - they don't have one for every product they have. The distributor has a returns policy to the retailer that has no bearing whatsoever on the retailers policy to the customer. The publisher has a returns policy with the distributor that has no bearing whatsoever on any of the downward returns policies - I used to work in software distribution and frankly, you don't seem to know even the outline of the workings of it.

Not true our company has different warrenty & support policies with different distributers & with a couple of retailers which means two products at the same retailer can have a very different returns policy

A
gain, sorry to say, but you are mistaken. They used securerom which may or may not cause a problem with your PC..... if it does then you'd need to take it up with them. It could equally be said to be a problem with Vista.... either way, you're not going to be able to lay the blame on the Publisher as they'd also be the victim if this was proveable, which of course it isnt..

No they have chosen to use a system that has a known bug which also makes it very easy to prove (i'll try and find the links for the microprose case) and this is the important bit they haven't communicated

You wouldn't even get into court, let alone be chucked out.

Don't take this personally, but you have a strange sense of what you can do by law and don't seem to understand exactly who has what obligation.

The only group obliged to you is the retailer, and you could have taken the game back immediately (absolutely every item in the UK has a 7 day return policy - even food).... in fact, if you can prove that it does not work on your system and that the fault is not yours (difficult to prove) then you can still get a full refund up to a year later (for all non-consumables). Go and speak to the CAB if you want to understand your rights on it.

I know it will run it court our company lost 3 times in 2006 and paid out a total of £540,000 in very similar circumstances although involving our in house protection not securerom much of what you have said appears to be about 7 years out of date (like retail returns policy)

Added to that it's counter productive if they had replied to the email i'd be a little annoyed that it didnt work and run my own image but then i think all the copy protection system are counter productive they dont abd never will stop pirates with them so all they do is annoy those customers who do pay for the product and they cause alot of problems just look at the bioshock fiasco this week
If I had wanted to mess about with mini images/nocd's/keygens i'd have dowloaded it i'm sure its on a torrent somewhere

First of all it is not impossible to ascertain - a developer has no choice nor voice in the decision of choosing which security the product has - that is entirely down to the publisher.

Not true our company has different warrenty & support policies with different distributers & with a couple of retailers which means two products at the same retailer can have a very different returns policy

That's your company - business to business - it's not a high street retailer selling to end-users. You are also under obligation to make it clear to your customer what the returns policy is.

Can you imagine a shop giving you a list of differing returns policies on each of the items you pick up? :mischief:

A shop has a single returns policy for all its products... yes each of those products can have different returns policies with the manufacturer, but that's not what we were talking about.

Further, while I think it would be funny for you to try.... you wouldnt have a leg to stand on in court trying to take Securerom on - they in turn would say that their product works, you again would be forced to argue against the weight of validity, you'd lose. Whatever happened to your company is irrelevent, no matter the apparent similarity.

Actually, as I said, you don't really seem to know the extent of what can happen. You weren't even aware that the developer has nothing to do with the process - the initial claim that you would take litigation against them shows that.

I'll say it again for the last time - your only redress is against the retailer for selling you a product that doesn't work (althought the distributor may be willing to help) and where they refused (against the law) to allow you a refund/store credit.

Otherwise, you seem to be blaming the wheat farmer because you had a bad sandwich.... if you follow the line of supply there, you will get what I mean.

Great!! I think this news should be put on the front page of Civfanatics. It would stop all the questions about the patch once and for all...

With all the whining going on it sounds like many people involved in this thread are currently on theirs.

I am completely satisfied with BtS other than the fact that you cannot modify your CustomAssets without the game crashing in Multiplayer.

I think we can assume it will be quite a bit more extensive than Solver's unofficial patch. From what I understand, Solver only fixed a couple bugs, while Firaxis tends to adjust game balance and game play issues. The Warlords patch contained quite a lot of gameplay changes.

Well for me the big question is whether Solver's modifications will be included in the official patch. Especially how he separated corporation maintenance costs from inflation - which means that corporations cost far less with Solver's patch than without. Getting used to one style of playing with Solver's patch and then to another with the coming official patch would not be so nice.

I agree, especially considering that I think corporations would be incredibly overpowered if they made the maintenance any lower (as it stands there's almost no reason not to have Civilized Jewelers in every city you own).

I have to say with all the problems with BTS I do love to play this game. The infanite loop problem does tick me off and then I start over but nothing in this world is perfect. It is just a game! And a fun one at that!

So 2kGames is the 'publisher' which decided to use this 'securerom' and it was 2kGames that won't let me get my christ-raping money back?

the only annoying bug I ever noticed was the Celtic ub doing absolutely nothing, to say nothing of what the civilopedia says it does, but thats a mild nuisance nothing more.

Judging from the amount of posters that express satisfaction with BtS and refute the OP's claim about game breaking bugs, I think it's clear what most people think on the subject.

If the bugs do exist, most players have not been troubled with them to any large degree.

And in all honesty, when was the last time a major pc game was released without bugs?:borg: :assimilate: (I just wanted to use the borg smiley:mischief: )

The Celtic UB does absolutely nothing? I haven't played as the Celts yet in BTS, but that's the first I've heard of that bug.

The Celtic UB gives melee and archery troops the Guerilla promotion.... and it works on mine. Not sure what the problem is there PotatoOverdose?

So let me get this straight. You play an unsupported map type on a game speed that stresses system resources, on an overclocked GPU, and Firaxis is to blame for your problems?

How much RAM do you have? > 2 MB I hope, given the settings you use...

In my semi-professional opinion, if I was working tech support for Fireaxis, and you told me your problem, your hardware, I'd just laugh at you and hang up the phone.

Try installing more ram (expecting post that tells says that you have 2 gigs, in which case get faster ram). Also, shut off any heavy resource using applications (ie Firefox, office applications) before starting Civ IV. Don't run movies while playing Civ IV.

I appreciate the advice, but just because I am Chieftan-level poster does not mean I am a noob to PCs or PC games. Please read my posts instead of skimming through them.

I know I wrote a lot, but you will notice that I anticipated and answered these ideas already. Especially in the parts about having a 64-bit dual core processor and 3 Gigs of RAM. As in more than 2, less than 4, but right about at the cusp of what a 32-bit OS can use.

Though I didn't mention it was 667 Mhz PC2 5300 DDR2 RAM. Which moves at a pretty good clip. So does the rest of my hardware, but you tell me, since my posts are there to be read.

And If anybody's laughing at my hardware, it's because I exceed requirements, including for those dreaded GIANT maps and MARATHON modes! Oh, the humanity! But not by an absurd amount; these are easily amused laughers, you see.

And I do enjoy a good joke more than most people. Except my wife. Oh, and Captain Johnson. Come to think of it, most people enjoy a good joke more than me. But that's beside the point!

Good point. That's something I didn't mention earlier when I was talking about how more often than not a CTD or other "severe" crash is caused by faulty hardware more than faulty code.

That could be still the case for some people. I did not mention that I have a 500w PSU. But that doesn't matter in my case anymore.

Presenting Woerkilt's short-awaited report.

I have BTS running stably now. Solver's patch resolved the inherent, show-stopping bugs that I suffered. Except I still had these constant CTDs in the late game. So I played with my settings like I said that I would.

I can currently run an Epic speed game, on a Giant Map, with 32 Civs--just the game-breaking way I like it. I simply turned off the anti-aliasing. So far that seems to work. When I previously mentioned that I had adjusted graphics options, I had forgotten this bit.

I like this game quite a bit. And hopefully, I am helping people to enjoy it even more.

Judging from the amount of posters that... refute the OP's claim about game breaking bugs... If the bugs do exist...

One phrase for ya: "Bug Forums!" Oh, and here's this one: "Solver's Unoffical Patch notes and change log!" That was a bit longer, I know, but regardless of "if" these bugs exist, there "is" a patch to fix them ;).

If you do not play on marathon there are no real "game breaking" bugs. I would venture to guess that 90% of players keep it at the normal setting and therefore do not notice the bugs. The patch will come when it comes, the game is not dead or even halfway there. The BTS expansion added a lot of fun to the game that was honestly lacking prior to this expansion in retrospect.

This is slightly off the main's subject's track, but I think that many more players than you think play at Marathon Speed (it's the only one I can enjoy).

On the subject now, I wish that the official Civ website was updated and that Firaxis had a better communication policy.

All Civ editions had bugs, it's gonna be fixed soon. Patience...

There's not much to be sorry about. BTS kicks arse and I hope it encourages even more expansions! But thanks for the heads. Even though Solver, I believe, has cautioned customers not to ancitipate patches much ahead of time, or to treat any estimate as Scripture. Wise adivice, I'd say.
