I'm not sure, it depends on how excited I am about it at launch. I loved the first 5 Civ games, but I ended up a bit disappointed by 6. I hope to get some sense of the direction they are taking 7 in as more information is released. I'm hoping for more focus on refined, integrated systems, rather than just loads and loads of content thrown in haphazardly.

That’s how it was in Civ 5 yeah, but also how Civ 6 was on release. I think it changed with the patch that came with the Indonesia DLC or something.

Wasn't one of the selling points for Civ 6 "we reduced 1upt issues by putting units on different layers and allowing you to combine units at later stages in the game"?

I don't remember how much of a selling point that was or how much they hung their hat on that, but the different layers overall WAS in the game on release, but all civilian units shared the same layer on release.

Up until the Indonesia DLC patch or whatever, religious units shared the same layer as other civilian units. Then that patch gave them their own separate layer, so that for example a Missionary could share a tile with a Builder.

Hell no! I was so badly stung by pre-ordering 2 copies of Civ V that I'm never buying any game again until it's been out a while.

I'll pre-order just like I have all the other times. Very glad to see a new Civ cycle, so long as I have time to optimize graphics card needed prior to whenever it comes out in 2025.

I'd bet money it will end up being a day never purchase for me. The things I care about - a good UI that allows control of cities and units without a million clicks per turn, cities that actually look like cities, AI that isn't straight up coded to act annoying, an economy system including the concept of comparative advantage to promote peaceful relation building. After civ 6 I just can't see any of it happening. Then again, they might just pull another complete u-turn like they did in many ways when going from civ 5 to 6.

Wait and see the reviews. If it's a buggy mess, I'm gonna end up waiting for the patches to iron out the bugs. I'm sort of burnt from the less than stellar release of Cities Skylines II.

Pre-order. I want it now. All the flavor is about gone out of Civ 6.

depends entirely on how they change the game. if from prerelease footage i can already tell its mostly changes i like, i'll prolly end up buying it day 1. if its harder to tell if i'll like it, i might end up waiting a few weeks or months to watch others play the game and have some bug fixes get pushed out before making my decision. as much as i adore playing civ6, theres a part of me thats worried that after all the time i put into civ6's systems, it'll just be frustrating to switch to a different game. tho i'll always have civ6 to keep playing, so who knows
anyways very much doubt i'd preorder. i dont really care what reviewers have to say, i care how fun the game looks like itll be for me, and i'd wanna be really certain of that before i commit to spending money on the game

I never pre-order things. I probably won't buy it on day 1. I'm certain I'll buy it at some point. The real question is whether I buy it before it goes on sale or after. I think Civ is the only game I ever pay full price for. I'm reasonably confident that there will be enough exciting stuff in Civ7 that I'll want to get it, no matter what kind of reviews or bugs it has, the only question is whether my cheapness or my impatience will win out.

I preordered three copies of Civ 6 for myself and family and never really warmed up to the gameplay. I even bought the first expansion, hoping that maybe it would improve the gameplay. Turns out the original gameplay was fine, very popular and was what the design team wanted to create, it just wasn't a game I wanted to play.

I'll follow the Civ 7 announcements with interest, but I'll hold off on buying this time until the game is released and I know more about how it plays.

I never pre-order any game. I want to know what I buy. In this case, I would want to know more about the combat mechanics (no 1UPT or unlimited stacks), whether the economic development in the game allows enough interesting choices and whether the AI can present any sensible challenge. I will probably watch a bit of a Let's play video before I buy. It has nothing to do with the money, but just with spending time on something that I like or not.

I usually don't pre-order games because of their price and the future outcome that their price will eventually drop but by then the game will be all played out. Achievements and strategies that you can adapt to earlier can be used by people who pre-ordered the game and then you start out later as a complete noob while the game has already had development done by the people who bought the pre-release.

Everything that is wrong with the game industry, is visible in this poll.
Even if you got rid of pre-orders, they would simply be replaces by day one purchases without waiting for reviews. People want to play games they are interested in and will do so as soon as possible.

No. But if there is a demo, like there was for Civ 6, then I will play that ASAP.

Yeah, it is. For better or worse.

I wasn't thrilled with the cartoonishness of 6, but I did play it for 500+ hours. I'll likely put 500 into this, too.

I'm still playing Civ 5 (I didn't like Civ 6). I'll probably play it until it no longer works. Having been turned off by Civ 6 I definitely won't be buying Civ 7 unless it is more like Civ 5. Personally, I definitely did not go for the cartoony style. Each to their own, of course.
