Is it me, or is most of the US state flags ugly?

Yeah, I like Nova scotia.

The emblem is nice, but a bit too prominent. The flag is symmetrical and the colour combination is pleasing.

I like this one. The colors are good. If I made it, I'd leave out the seal and just have a blue circle.

Yeah a lot of US state flags are simply awful, too complicated.

Good flags:
Alabama
Alaska
New Mexico
Texas

Not great but not awful either:
Colorado
Hawaii
Maryland
Mississippi

The rest vary from close but bad to bloody awful. Too complex, especially since many of them have a small detailed picture in the middle.

Several Canadian flags aren't much better. Canada, Quebec and Nunavut have the three best flags, followed by Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. The others are pointlessly complex, with my own province's flag being quite bleh. I also like the flag for the Royal Canadian Mint.

EDIT:

Ew, good grief no. You shouldn't have pictures like that on flags!

American state flags are mostly terrible. Something like 4/5 of them have writing or state seals, and it usually isn't subtle. About ten of them just write the state's name in big letters, so you know what state you're in. Also, four state flags are homages to traitors against the united states, and a couple of others include the flags of other nations.

However, I really like Indiana's state flag, even allowing for the small bit of writing.

Nunavut, Nova Scotia and Quebec are pretty much my favorites in Canada.

Back south of the border to the original topic, special mentions to:

-New Mexico has awesome history behind it (it's a pueblo people symbol making it one of about *two* US states flag that acknowledges the Natives),
-Maryland gets cookie points for not being a stupid state seal on a field of whatever color (and being generally pretty cool),
-Texas isn't bad (at least has the merit of being simple)
-Indiana as noted above is nice.
-Cookie points for Ohio and Tennessee for not doing the state seal thingy.
-Special mention for Massachusetts because their state seal is relatively well designed enough (compared to...all the others) to result in a semi-decent flag. Also see "acknowledging the natives"

A special place for Vermont for not taking the awesome Green Mountain Boys flag and instead doing a stupid state-seal-on-green/blue design like almost everybody else.

And a final special mention back in Canada for the flag of French Ontario, which is pretty cool in my opinion.

If I am correct, California is the only independent nation ever to have any sort of writing on the flag.
Ordem e Progresso?
(is the spelling right, w.i.m.?)

Also, what about, S.P.Q.R.? Not exactly a flag, but still…

I'm sure the Nazi flag would be more recognizable, so I'm not sure 'most recognized flag' is an honor you want.;)

Ah, I forgot Brazil. But this was the flag of the Romans (At least at one point. The concept of national flags was not around during the Caeser-era. So yes, this was used in the Byzantium-era)

That is the flag of the House/Dynasty of Palæologos.

You also have the double headed eagle which was later adopted by the Romanovs along with the more standard labarum.

That is actually a pretty decent flag. The Nazis had some serious style.

That's kinda the point of the flags - which is why so many have the seal on them. They aren't meant for flying outside of exterior buildings(with the exception of city halls[usualy]) so detailing doesn't matter as majority of the time you'll see it displayed in doors/up close.

That being said Florida's isn't all that amazing

As a poster in the previous page said - I would also remove the whole 'In God We Trust' wording; but that's up for a whole different discussion thread.

The point of a flag is something easily recognizable and easily understood, you don't need complex pictures on them, that should be something else entirerly.

Most of these flags fail at least 3 if not 4 of the 5 basic flag design points listed here: http://www.nava.org/Flag Design/GFBF/gfbf-3.htm.
