It is time for a change in the way things are moderated

I just think a public interaction at the borderline would help moderators and the community understand each other a bit more. I see it as more of a discussion than a guessing game.

PM interaction between an infractee and he mods is just difficult, because the poster is likely riled up and his arguments are not taken as credible to the extent that a third party's take may be.

Perhaps if there is a post that x number of posters want public discussion on and the poster and moderator (if it was infracted) agree, we could discuss it.

I do like your suggestions for relaxed moderation upthread, but I do not see that happening.

I personally like how AH.com's system of moderation:

Basically, besides banning and warnings, they have "kicks", where people are allowed to access the site and PM other people, but not post. This is generally reserved for moderate offences, like major, but one-off instances of trolling. Persistant trolling, antagonising other members immediately after being kicked, and racism/neonazism/advocation of genocide merits an instant banning.

They also have a Hall of Infamy, where PDMA of warnings, kickings, and bannings can take place.

Their "Kick" is our ban. Plus you could just log out and view anyway. Though losing PMs would sting... Not exactly fair though, considering the PMs might be directed at mods/admins for appeal.

The PM capacity just gives a substitute target for trolling and flaming. There is one other method which I shall not disclose.

I'm pretty sure the mods can block PMs if they need to. I don't see any reason this can't be case by case rather than universal. There are *Some* cases where a banned person would use PMs to harass, but that's not universal. Just let the harassed person report it, then block them.

@Jollyroger- Its EMail. CFC is powerless regarding that.

Moderator Action: This is not a great path to be on, guys.

The admins can block PMs. The admins can, if they wish, read them, and also any emails that go through the forum. And I'm not telling any CFC secrets - that's how every forum I've ever run or moderated has been set up. Fortunately, our admins here are sufficiently ethical that they don't bother to invade peoples' privacy (at least I would sincerely like to believe this is so, and am 99.9999999999999999999999999% sure that I'm right).

Birdjaguar, I would like to make a comment about your mod-tagged comment (briefly and just as an observation/suggestion). May I do so without getting hit with an infraction for PDMA? I believe it's relevant to the discussion.

With all due respect, Camikaze, I would appreciate for Birdjaguar to respond, as that's who I addressed.

So does anyone support the idea of seperating temporary bannings and permanent bannings?

Admin, singular. TF is the only admin who can do so, and does it very rarely and only with extremely good reason.

Technically, although the 'access' message says otherwise, only Super Admins can read PMs. Thunderfall is a Super Admin, not a normal admin. Technically, I am a super-admin as well (but I don't read PMs).

Oh, I didn't realize you were a Super admin too....
