It is time for a change in the way things are moderated

This is an amazing copout for pretty much any criticism of anything at CFC.
Just my opinion and observation. :p

I can understand if we fail on delivering Civ-related content and stuff, and thus shld rightly be criticized for it, but to be criticized for stumbling a bit (very subjective opinion here) on handling political/religious discussions?

Of course the site tries to provide the service and coverage, but as you can already see, there's only so much you can do with volunteers, who have families, careers etc to take of or otherwise burned out. Shldn't really expect the ultimate, quality service.

Is most of the team even participating regularly?
Some are currently busy at the moment with work, exams, family and the like. Some I have no idea.

A few are still looking in but it's still better than at some periods in the past...

I really think there should be a system of permanent bannings, for stuff like advocating mass murder, genocide denial, etc. To be honest, it's completely rediculous that people who've done such things are permanently banned from posting from other forums, while here all they get is the equivalent of a slap on the wrist.

@KD- As someone who has all but forgotten this is a Civ site:p I do see where you're coming from on the one hand. On the other hand, there's an OT community here, so just saying "Find another forum" doesn't really work. Of course, there are still limits on what can be done...

Actually, I think so too. :p I'd certainly love a faster way to PB someone, who is obviously a liability to the community. Well, obvious to me anyways.

But this is TF's site and he's a very easy-going and forgiving kind of person, so we don't do it this way, unless as the final, last, confirmed again to be final kind of action. So that's how we roll on this, since that's how the boss wants it. :ack:

Oh, good. I think it was earlier in this thread that Cutlass pointed out the apparent absences. We don't hear much noise from the outside and I can't be the only one wondering if anyone's home.

I think the opposite is true, too. Posters shouldn't be permbanned for less than serious problems. I bet a lot of us are thinking of the same examples I won't name.

One of the mods once threatened a permaban on me for something that is relatively very minor. That made me very angry. I will no more details.

Of course we should expect quality service. And frankly, I don't care if it's volunteer moderators - I paid my own dues around here with plenty of volunteer hours spent helping out - and if I minded, I shouldn't have agreed to be a moderator in the first place, right? I don't see why it should be any different for anyone else who agrees to be on staff. If you're too busy to do moderating, don't be a moderator.

As for finding political discussion elsewhere, that's precisely what I did. Some of it's better, some of it's worse. Since I'm still here, it should be obvious that I haven't given up on this place, and believe that I still have something to contribute here - and there are still conversations to be had, things to learn, etc.

OT used to be a fun place to post, but now it is far too serious. So often you can't make a joke without getting a warning or worse. The fun has been sucked out of a forum that once used to have life in it. Now there are so many rules that it is not worth posting there any more.

I really enjoy the trolling infractions of posts with no malicious intent that are worded slightly badly, and the lack of trolling infractions of posts with malicious intent that are extremely carefully worded.

I have notice that too

I hope not.

Mods are only human. I once gave MYSELF an in-thread warning (included a few more people, but I was equally guilty) to stay on-topic. It was a good reminder that moderators should not be above the rules, and I cannot respect any moderator who feels he is above the rules.

Is there some method for appealing against an infraction?

I think there should be a more fluid system of moderation. Have a series of candidates become Junior Mods for six months. Those that perform their duties sufficiently become Moderators for eight months. After those eight months, you appoint the one or two best Moderators as Super Mods, and ditch the rest.

The numbers can be tweaked, but the system itself is what I'm emphasizing.

How does the Best get determined? I hope not by number of infractions :ack:
